...January 25, 2015 Locus of Control 1) How much of a person’s destiny is controlled by personal decisions and efforts and how much is controlled by external circumstances? I believe that a person’s destiny is controlled mainly by their personal decisions and efforts throughout their lifetime. Anyone can pursue to have an amazing life, it just depends on how much effort they put into their life decisions and how hard they are willing to work until they reach their goal. For instance, athletes that have the dream to compete at the Olympic level dedicate their whole lives to training for their sport because they are willing to work and put 100% effort into fulfilling their dreams. An Olympic athlete didn’t get onto the podium by sitting on the couch. External circumstances also come into factor, but it doesn’t control a person’s destiny as much as one’s personal decisions and efforts. External circumstances are a product of life; we aren’t able to control certain factors that can happen to us. For instance, an athlete can train all year for a competition and have an accident that can change their whole career. Rather than letting such events control our personal decisions and efforts, it should make us stronger and push for new goals. 2) What factors contribute to a higher of lower self-esteem, self-efficacy, and locus of control? Can these factors be changed? There are many factors that can contribute to someone’s self-esteem, self-efficacy and locus of control. The one main...

...Locus of Control PSY/285 Locus of Control Individuals are faced with many decisions that will affect their lives. It is important to use critical thinking before making these decisions. As individuals we can have either an internal or external locus of control and both it just depends on the situation ("Locus of Control", 2013). Both internal and external locus of control can be situational, whereas which one is beneficial to the current situation. Silberstein (2013), “Psychologists call people who take credit for success and the blame for failure ‘internals’ and externals, blame outside forces or bad luck for their failures and attribute their successes to good fortune”. I always have had an outlook on life whereas; I am the one control. Taking the locus of control assessment confirmed this for me. When considering internal and external locus of control the outcome can differ. The outcome of a rewarding feeling when one makes the right decision has a positive effect on their life from internal locus of control. On the other hand, having the outcome of regret and doubt when one has made a decision based off the influence of others; this is an example of external locus of control. Personally, it is better to have internal locus control because everyone should make their own decisions in life. It is rewarding to learn from the decisions that you made. I exhibit less effective locus of control when I have to make important life and death decisions, this is when I consult...

...Checkpoint: Locus of Control Esther S. Escobar Chavez 04/06/2012 PSY/285-Social Psychology Dr. Thomas King Checkpoint: Locus of Control One example of internal and external locus of control is the situation a person might encounter when changing to a new job, in a different country. In this situation, not only the merits of the person might help her get that job but also, being at the right place, at the right time. The results of my locus of control assessment indicate that I have a strong internal locus of control. There are several outcomes of internal and external locus of control, the positive outcomes include that a person tends to be more responsible for their actions, and he understand that what he does will have results that will make an impact in his life, those results might be positive or negative though. The outcomes of external locus of control is the ability to believe that even when if you do all that it is in your hands, there will always be external things that will influence and possibly change the course of the things you wanted to do. In my opinion, is better to have a strong internal locus of control, because you will most likely make an effort to change your current situation and achieve what you want. However, there are situations in which I have a strong external locus of control, and that include those in which you might trust that destiny or God will decide if you can do something or not. I believe it is good to believe in God and...

...Locus of Control Tina Boutin PSY/285 Oct. 26, 2014 Gavin Coriell Locus of Control There are two types of Locus of control, internal locus and external locus. The type of locus of control an individual has helps determine the person’s perception of events in their life. Locus of control also determines whether they believe they have control over these life events, or if they are determined based on the external forces which surround them. Individuals who have internal locus of control believe that their choices and behavior have an impact on their quality of life. Those with external locus of control believe that luck, fate, or other external forces are responsible for the quality of their life, (Myers, 2012, p. 51). There are good and bad points to internal and external locus of control, which relate to both, (Humphrey, 1999-2012). I have completed and evaluated my responses to the Locus of Control Assessment and find that I have internal locus of control. This means that I believe I am generally in control of events that affect my life, an evaluation which I agree with. I believe that in order to change things in my life I don’t like, I have to make that change and not leave it up to chance or fate. Some positive examples of internal locus would be if studied hard and for my effort I received an A, or I entered a writing contest and I got chosen the winner. In these situations I controlled the events in my life, first by studying, and second for writing a paper...

...The five self-assessments are things I know about myself but never asked why; or I just didn’t think about them. Furthermore, these self-assessments indicate areas where I need improvement, and will also serve to help me in my professional and personal lives. I scored a fifty-two (52) on the communication quiz, which indicates I’m a capable communicator but sometimes experiences communication problems. It is interesting to note that 87% of the class scored within my range of thirty-six to fifty-five (36 – 55). My lowest scores were in Planning Your Message and Encoding. In order to become a better communicator, I plan to perfect my listening skills and be more conscious of planning how, when, and what I say. On the Problem-Solving Skills self-assessment quiz I scored a fifty-seven (57), revealing my approach to problem-solving was “hit or miss.” The low scores I received on the quiz were in Find the Problem and Find Ideas. I answered the questions based on my extensive knowledge of the...

...Locus of Control After reading the chapter on locus control, I would have to say that I feel that an internal locus control would be the most beneficial to most real life situations we all face today. I personally feel that everything that we experience in life, whether good or bad is directly linked by our own actions. There are a lot of people out there that succumb to external locust but it has been my experience that most of them people suffer from some type of “defeated” outlook on almost everything that happens to them or what they go through. After completing the assessment, I found that I can associate more with having an internal locus. I have always felt that whatever happens in my life time is due to my own decisions. Sometimes I do find myself saying I have the worst luck or that it is something else’s fault that things didn’t go my way but for the most part, I feel I have total control of my life. Some positive outcomes of internal locus is motivation, happiness, drive and self-reliance. An example of external locus control would probably be going to the casino. You already know that the odds are stacked against you but you know deep down inside there is still a chance to win big and most of all, you are being entertained! Some negative outcomes of internal locus would probably the fact that your motivation and confidence can be hurt such as failing a test because you feel you didn’t study hard enough. The negative outcomes of external locus are tremendous...

...2011, p. 33). The leader’s self insight exercises taking the form of questionnaires, scenarios and activities provides self-assessments for learners and opportunities to experience leadership issues in a personal nature (Draft, 2011, p. xv). Therefore, knowing each individual leader unique set of qualities, characteristics, and strengths can be beneficial to the leadership role, by giving a perspective to leadership behavior (2013, p. 33). The question in this case is; does leader’s self insight assessments proves effective for learners and offers opportunities for improving leadership? In constructing this paper it was found that chapter three and chapter four contains a total of eight leader’s self-insight exercises in the form of questionnaires, scenarios and activities, all providing self-assessments for learners and offering opportunities for leadership roles. The question remains how will we perform under pressure and respond as a work group leader while, focusing on how the leader’s self-insight contributes to the learner’s leadership development. We should find the answers from the following insights; T-P Leadership Questionnaire: An assessment of style, Are you Ready?, measuring substitutes for leadership, big five personality, measuring locus of control, instrumental and end values, what’s your thinking style , and personality assessment Jung’s typology. ...N. Muthukrishna’s model of academic success (2000), the present authors hypothesized that freshman retention in an engineering program would be related to not only basic aptitude but also affective factors. Participants were 129 college freshmen with engineering as their stated major. Aptitude was measured by SAT verbal and math scores, high school grade-point average (GPA), and an assessment of calculus readiness. Affective factors were assessed by the NEO–Five Factor Inventory (FFI; P. I. Costa & R. R. McCrae, 2007), and the Nowicki–Duke Locus of Control (LOC) scale (S. Nowicki & M. Duke, 1974). A binary logistic regression analysis found that calculus readiness and high school GPA were predictive of retention. Scores on the Neuroticism and Openness subscales from the NEO-FFI and LOC were correlated with retention status, but Openness was the only affective factor with a significant unique effect in the binary logistic regression. Results of the study lend modest support to Borkowski’s model. Keywords: calculus readiness, college retention, engineering students, Five Factor Model, Locus of Control, STEM fields THE NEED FOR TRAINED ENGINEERS IN THE U.S. WORKFORCE is constantly increasing, and the number of students graduating from engineering programs is not keeping up with this demand (Duderstadt, 2001). ...James Potris December 17, 2013 CO2520 Unit 1 Project Part 1: Brand You After taking the self-assessments from the library these are the results of ME. What’s my basic personality? Items 1, 6, and 11. I scored a 7 in extraversion. This score puts me in the middle of an extravert and an introvert. I agree with this, I am social, but not that talkative, there are times I will be assertive. Items 2, 7, and 12. I scored a 12 in agreeableness. This at the high end of the range. This part of the assessment is right on target. I am good-natured, cooperative and trusting. Items 3, 8, and 13. I scored a 12 in conscientiousness. I would have to agree on this category. I am someone who is responsible very dependable and persistent on my goals. Items 4, 9, and 14. I scored a 13 in emotional stability. I am always calm, collective, and secure in my life. Items 5, 10 and 15. I scored a 6 in openness to experience. This does sound like me, I am more conventional and I do like the things I familiar with. The next assessment taken was, “What’s my locus of control”? My score in the category was an 8.This indicated I have a high internal locus of control. I believe I control my life. It is not by luck or chance that gets things done. I am well structured and enjoy the same routine. The next assessment was, “How good are my listening skills”? My score was a 49. I do need to make a better effort to listen better, and not try to answer before the speaker is...

...leader. The leader needs to provide guidance and instructions. Once the followers demonstrate they are self-confident, the leader can change from directing style to coaching style. My first couple of weeks in my former job, my supervisor used directing style as well. As time passed I obtained self-confidence and skills in my job, as a result my supervisor stopped giving me instructions because she knew I was ready for the job. That’s why I don’t agree with my result from the self-assessment test. Locus of control means if the person believes that they have control, or if it was out of their control. People with internal locus of control are more likely to succeed in school and cope with pain because they feel like they have control over themselves. On the other hand people with external locus of control sees environmental causes and situational factors as being in control over them. In the self-assessment test of measuring locus of control I scored a 58, which means I have an internal locus of control. I believe I am responsible for my own choices and action, and I deal with the consequences of them. This week...

...Human Relations in Administration, I will take many assessments about myself. These assessments will teach me about myself not only as a student but as a person. These assessments will help me create a personal development plan which will explain my goals and how I will reach them. Thus far, one thing I have learned is that my Jungian Typology is ISTJ (Introvert Sensing Thinking Judging). This means I am dutiful, I prefer facts over theories, and I am good at decision making. The negatives of an ISTJ personality type is that I can come off as cold to people because I am quiet and I get extremely frustrated by other’s incompetence. I learned that I need to be more outgoing so people view me as warm and inviting....

Section one, also milestone one, of my paper will be where I first began to set my vision for the course. In this section, I will bring in information I have gleaned from the self-assessments that I completed in this milestone. In section two, also milestone two, I will briefly explain and present my work from the SWOT analysis. In section three, also milestone three, I will present my work from my PEST analysis and briefly explain what I learned from the analysis. Section four of my paper, which is milestone four, I will create a chart showing three practical goals I developed during the course. Also in this section, I will briefly explain whether the overall plan benefited me and also what I learned about myself. Over the course of my study, I have learned many things about myself that I did not know anything about. The course helped me to figure out what could benefit me. I have completed three major milestones throughput the course, all of which I have gained some kind of knowledge about. The first milestone I completed was basically self-assessments reflecting on myself as a person, student, and professional. It also gave me a chance to organize my thoughts about what I wanted to get out of this personal development plan. The second milestone I completed was the SWOT analysis. A SWOT analysis stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats...

...Culturally Competent Care for Mexican-Americans Terry A. Stevens Grand Canyon University: NUR 502- Theoretical Foundations for Nursing Roles and Practice January 13, 2016 Culturally Competent Care for Mexican-Americans For centuries nursing has been a dynamic, this is constantly evolving and adapting in response to a wide range of stimuli. A recent circumstance that has influenced nursing considerably is the consumer mandate for culturally competent care in an increasingly diverse, multicultural society. Although Euro-American culture has reign superior in the United States, the nation has shifted to a conviction where various ethnic, racial, and religious groups thrive in a single society. As a result, the importance of culturally competent care and understanding cultural differences is crucial for the nursing profession. This manuscript focuses on the Mexican-American culture. This particular culture was selected because Mexican-Americans represent the largest and fastest-growing minority population in the United States (Eggenberger, S.K., Grassley, J. & Restrepo E., 2006). Furthermore, Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the United States. The prevalence of the Mexican-American population suggests the need for nurses to become more accustomed with Mexican-American culture and values. The purpose of this document is to promote nurses’ awareness of culturally constructed concepts of the Mexican-American culture in order to provide culturally competent...

How will your behavior need to change for academic success? From the assessment I learned that I am ready for college but I need to make more time to study and do homework. I need to stay focused so this doesn’t become an issue in the future. My reasons for going to school are well defined, Support and resources are not an issue for me. You have to act now or production lines stop. That would be a reason I tend to jump to solutions. I have taken a field assignment with my company working with customers so now I have to take a step back and gather the data before I make a decision.
