...ICOSAMP – The Information Core for Southern African Migrant Pests Margaret Powell1 1ICOSAMP Co-ordinator, Agricultural Research Council – Plant Protection Research Institute, P/Bag X134, Pretoria 0001, South Africa (Contact: icosamp@ecoport.org). Abstract Migrant pests such as locusts, armyworm, and Quelea birds, annually plague the southern African region, and in some years have been known to cause devastating damage to food crops within member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). As these pests are highly mobile and often cross political boundaries, communication and collaboration between neighbouring countries is vital with respect to forecasting, monitoring, and controlling these outbreaks. ICOSAMP, endorsed by SADC and funded by the UK Department for International Development, has established a regional network of information officers who submit monthly reports on the status of migrant pests in their country to the ICOSAMP co-ordinator. This close interaction between national Ministries of Agriculture, Plant Protection Institutes, and NGO’s, not only highlights potential areas at risk from migrant pests, but also provides a platform for technical co-operation and sharing of research information. The provision of early warning of impending cross-border invasions prevents the uncontrolled spread of migratory pests, thus reducing the impact of these pests on the food security of the region. ICOSAMP utilises modern technology...

...a Xbox or Play Station. My boyfriend and his friends always played it, while I would watch. The Locust characters frightened me because of their different noises and scary appearance. On the other hand, I was intrigued by the graphics due to the great deal of line work. I also enjoyed the copious amounts of gore involved in the game. I finally picked up a controller and began playing for myself. Since the day I began playing, I delved into all three Gears of War games. I tried to play the campaign or storyline for these games, but they were mostly incredibly boring due to the constant cut scenes. The entire Gears of War series is about the COG or human soldiers trying to save the last human inhabitants on a fictional planet called Sera from the subterranean enemy species known as the Locust Horde or Locust for short. Basically, you are fighting for a place to live. Last week, on March 19th, Gears of War: Judgement was released. I was a bit hesitant about purchasing this game because it was co-developed by Bulletstorm Studio People Can Fly and Epic Games, which changed the graphics to include much less line work. I bought it anyways and beat it in about eight hours over the course of three days. The game play was completely different than any of the other games, when it comes to interaction between characters and especially which buttons on the controller do what. The controls are more like the Call of Duty games when it comes to switching your guns or throwing grenades. ...

...NATURE|Vol 461|1 October 2009 Vol 461|1 October 2009 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS JOURNAL CLUB Bruce R. Conklin Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, San Francisco, California A geneticist wonders why we need to sleep. Scientists can have a love–hate relationship with sleep. We know that it is vital for our health, but not the reasons why. We celebrate dreams that provide inspiration, but often dismiss sleep as a chore. Yet deep sleep can provide insight into vexing problems. In 1920, pharmacologist Otto Loewi famously had a recurring dream that suggested how he could demonstrate neurotransmission in the lab. The key experimental details escaped him until he captured the dream in a bedside notebook. Later that day, he performed his Nobel-prizewinning experiments with the aid of a few frog hearts and a water bath. Now, a team led by Ying-Hui Fu reports that a single mutation in a gene called DEC2 can cause people to sleep for only about six hours per night instead of the usual eight (Y. He et al. Science 325, 866–870; 2009). This mutation seems to be exceedingly rare, with only two carriers found so far. Only by introducing this mutation into transgenic mice and fruitflies could the researchers show compelling evidence of the mutation’s effect. These two additional waking hours each day are quite remarkable when you consider that, over 80 years, this would add up to more than 8 years of extra productivity! Why are extreme short sleepers so rare? Surely evolutionary pressures...

...Benavidez, Daryl Adrienne B. 1. Define Entomology. a. "Entomology is the study of insects." -P.J. Gullan and P.S. Cranston, 2010 b. "Entomology (from Greek ἔντομος, entomos, "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and -λογία, -logia[1]) is the scientific study of insects, a branch of arthropodology." 2. List down five branches of branches of entomology and describe it. a. Ecology and Behaviour - Ecology is the scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment, such as the interactions organisms have with each other and with their abiotic environment while behaviour can be regarded as any action of an organism that changes its relationship to its environment. Behavior provides outputs from the organism to the environment. b. Taxonomy- It is the study of classification. Classification of insects and their relatives is also part in studying entomology. Classifications are tools that gives names for groups of species that serves as an easy way for communicating information about those species. c. Anatomy and Physiology- This is the study of the internal and external body parts of an organism where it is discussed anatomically (where it is found) and physiologically (what is its purpose). This is very important in studying entomology because throughout the class, the parts of insects will be described and pointed out. The anatomical and physiological properties of the insects' body parts will be tackled too. d. Biochemistry-...

...this point in his life the grasshopper was not a symbol for hate, for he often expressed that he loved his mother deeply, but rather he likely felt betrayed by his mother in leaving him with his father and associated the grasshopper with the memory, not his mother herself (Pressly). Another appearance of the symbol in his childhood was a time he recalls that “[his] girl cousin purposefully crushed a large grasshopper on [his] neck” (Pressly). Describing the insect that was crushed “still stirring” against his skin with terms suggesting sexual aggression from the insect that was “half-destroyed”, “clutching” with its “jagged legs” with such “death-grip” (Pressly). ...Summary of the books of the Old Testament Numbers The Genre's of this book are made up of Law and History due to the sins of disobedience and "god" worshiping. Along Israel's journey they were led away to wandered for 40 years in the wilderness before coming into the promised land. In the first 25 chapters of Numbers we see the experiences of the first generation of the Israelites in the wilderness along with the census of the men for battle. The remaining chapters of Numbers describes the experiences of the second generation. Obedience and rebellion followed by repentance and blessing, are themed throughout the entire book. The experiences Moses encountered in this book included his own siblings turning on him and anger starting to control many of his actions, and even due to his own disobedience Moses was unable to walk into the Promise Land. Numbers describes the walk of the Israelites as well as filling the gap between the Israelites receiving the law and getting them ready to enter the Promise Land . Ruth In this short narrative story, Ruth, a Moabite widow, willingly leaves her homeland to care for her mother-in-law, Naomi, who is also a widow. Being a Moabite, Ruth was not a part of God’s chosen people, Israel, but she chose to follow God anyway. God rewarded her for her faithfulness and her kindness to her mother-in-law. First, He provided for Ruth’s physical needs. As Ruth went out to get food, she came upon a field, where the owner allowed her to gather as...

...Kin Faat Chau (Lucas) Professor Gustafson ARLT 101 07/09/2013 Preface Compilation of this extract involved numerous connections of societal development realities whereby tangible sources that supported the document provided critical information, particularly on Los Angeles historical fundamentals. Civilization is the major aspect explored in this study; the supportive materials helped my writing with analogous information that clarified the encompassed perspectives of societal detrimental issues that indicates the need for improvement, as pointed out by Mennell (p. 2). I have to acknowledge these sources for laying a foundation that proved the societal view and responses towards creation of possible change through literacy basics in their perspective community based activities. Social and political class play critical role in shaping people’s life whereby in sometimes they can be destructive rather than constructive in the societies. The view of human nature as a basic reality received in diverse perspectives indicates the need for substantive measures in taking people’s consideration when the moral basics are involved. Formulation of substantial laws to provide governance prospects are areas that many of the authors relied on in this study have proved to require substantive corrections to guide the people who seem to encounter the hardships of accepting others, particularly with the illusive approaches on society well-being. In most cases, as seen in this study,...

...change, keep their way of life or better still balance both worlds in one. The way Achebe presents the arrival of the colonists and their imposition of change on the Igbo Society raises some thought to me on the true intention of colonialism i.e. did they come to spread Christianity or to acquire the land? The rapid unfold of events in the novel makes me harness the latter view; they took the stronghold of the Igbo society i.e. religion, turned it into a weakness, in the name of change, to enable them exploit the land. One thing that held the society together was their religion/tradition and once the colonists introduced Christianity, we see that conflict arose and broke the unity that always existed amongst the Igbo society giving them more control over the land. This is not to say that colonialism had no benefit for the Igbo/African society but rather the approach to change brought more harm than good to the people and the land. This approach to change, in my view, was a tool of oppression rather than a...

...Drew Burgelin Mr. Campbell AP LIT 12 April 2014 The Significance of Death and Change in “A Rose for Emily” In “A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner, Emily Grierson’s strange actions and macabre, mysterious character qualities convey the story’s central themes of death, despair, and change. Faulkner’s modernist style and use of detail, flashbacks, and time shifts capture the reader as the narrator jumps from Emily’s death in the “present” to specific scenes of her past. The story depicts death as the powerful aspect that controls Emily’s actions in order to show the profound potential that death has to change people’s lives cataclysmically. At the same time, the story also evokes change through Emily’s refusal to give up her old-fashioned ways in order to show that the only way to avoid radical change is to be isolated, and even in the end, that cannot stand in the way of modernization. The thematic potential of death is introduced by the speaker’s recurring references to death throughout Emily’s life in order to explain Emily’s odd, mysterious nature. The speaker firsts introduces the reader to Faulkner’s fictional Jefferson, MI in Yoknapatawpha County where Emily Grierson’s funeral is being held at her home, which no one in the entire town had been inside for “at least ten years.” Then, the speaker goes back in time and describes that Emily’s taxes were “remitted” by Colonel Sartorisas as a result of her father’s death, which further isolated her from the community...

...Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” is a twentieth century work of art that serves the purpose of conveying the intricacies of African culture while at the same time giving voice to the underrepresented and exploited inhabitants of Nigeria. This work was written in response to Western writings on African culture, which treated Africa in a cultureless and subhuman light of view. “Things Fall Apart” portrays the conflict between the White colonial government and the indigenous Igbo people in Nigeria, illuminating the European and African perspectives on Colonial control, race, religion and culture. The Igbos believed that each man was responsible for his fate or destiny. They believed that a man has the ability to change his life and achieve status through economics and military accomplishments, the latter being through agriculture, and that all of this results solely from hard work. The Nigerian society, unlike European societies, was characterized by a Darwinian society in the way that people who achieved great feats were rewarded, rather than a caste-like system where there was no chance of improving one’s status. The ability to move up in rank in Nigerian culture is portrayed in the story of Onkonkwo. Born to an indebted and effeminate father, Okonkwo strives to rise through the social system and achieve everything his father could not. He is intolerant and biased towards women to the point where he describes weak men as women. Okonkwo views emotion as a weakness and thus...

...CHARTER ABC Clothing of Locust Grove Virginia is a small family owned clothing store that has been open for over forty five years now. We have one location in Locust Grove, Virginia and our store uses a paper card system. We have to continuously adjust our totals as the inventory is bought or sold. Our store has to shut down every year for two days to perform an annual inventory by hand. This takes an extensive toll on our staff and uses up a lot of our manpower. Since our store is not computerized, we have difficulty keeping accurate track of our inventory and we are constantly over ordering. This leads to us continuously putting items on clearance and losing more money. We formally request that you advise us on a new system that will help us to keep a track of our inventory better so we can stay competitive in the area. TYPE OF EQUIPMENT NEEDED Clothing retailers have to be more on their toes than most other retailers. They have to constantly adjust their stock for the four seasons, holidays and special events throughout the year. Using the manual method could get overwhelming especially around special events and holidays. Over ordering items can lead to having to reduce prices and selling items clearance. Under ordering can lead to a significant loss of your customer base. For this reason, using the automated system is very important for a clothing store. There are many different ways you can set up your automated inventory system. The first system is a standard barcode...

...Aparna T.V II-MA English Dr. Swaralipi Nandi 18-09-2014 Theme of Colonialism in ‘Things Fall Apart’ Introduction : Poet and novelist Chinua Achebe was one of the most important Africanwriters. He was also considered by many to be one of the most original literary artists writing in English during his lifetime. He is best known for his novel Things Fall Apart (1958). Born Albert Chinualumogo Achebe, Chinua Achebe was raised by Christian evangelical parents in the large village Ogidi, in Igboland, Eastern Nigeria. He received an early education in English, but grew up surrounded by a complex fusion of Igbo traditions and colonial legacy. He studied literature and medicine at the University of Ibadan; after graduating, he went to work for the Nigerian Broadcasting Company in Lagos and later studied at the British Broadcasting Corporation staff school in London. During this time, Achebe was developing work as a writer. Starting in the 1950s, he was central to a new Nigerian literary movement that drew on the oral traditions of Nigeria's indigenous tribes. Although Achebe wrote in English, he attempted to incorporate Igbo vocabulary and narratives. Things Fall Apart (1958) was his first novel, and remains his best-known work. It has been translated into at least forty-five languages, and has sold eight million copies worldwide. Chinua Achebe’s “African Trilogy” : Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God captures a society...
