December 14th~ I am writing in our new home in Willamette Valley, just outside of the beautiful Oregon City. When we arrived we decided to build a one room log cabin with a dirt floor, and that is where we are living in now. Our log cabin has a loft where the children sleep, and that is also where we store some of our necessities. As I said before, our house is made out of logs that Adam and Jacob had cut down. Adam, the our boys, and our neighbor Henry Adams from our wagon train, cut notches at the ends of the logs, and placed them in a square on top of stone footings. They kept on stacking and fitting the logs very carefully until the walls were tall enough. Two of the opposite sides were smaller, so the roof could be placed, while the other sides got higher to a point. Our roof is made of wooden shingles from slices of the timber. Adam cut holes for windows, a door, and a fireplace. We then built a stone chimney around the fireplace. We filled any …show more content…
We stopped suddenly to find out what happened. I was very concerned that we would have to replace a wheel, but as it turned out we only broke one spoke on the back left wheel. Thankfully we didn’t have to replace it, and we got to keep on going. Another thing that I am surprised not to have mention was that girl with flaming red hair in our wagon train. She was the niece of a peculiar woman in our train. The niece was scatterbrained and homely. No man wanted anything to do with the niece with the flaming red hair. One day after we had eaten supper with the Shoshone Indian tribe, a young Shoshone rode up along our train. Suddenly the woman with red hair rode off with him into the sunset never to be seen again. The aunt was devastated, and we tried to comfort her, but the situation just seemed so odd. The aunt never knew such a thing would happened. The Oregon Trail could be very mysterious at
