...Introduction Flipkart is an Indian e-commerce company headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. It was founded by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in 2007. In its initial years, Flipkart focused on online sales of books, but it later expanded to electronic goods and a variety of other products. Flipkart offers multiple payment methods like credit card, debit card, net banking, e-gift voucher, and the major of all Cash on Delivery.[3] The cash-on-delivery model adopted by Flipkart has proven to be of great significance since credit card and net banking penetration is very low in India. History Flipkart was founded in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, both alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. They worked for Amazon.com before quitting and founding their own company. Initially they used word of mouth marketing to popularise their company. A few months later, the company sold its first book on flipkart.com—John Woods' Leaving Microsoft to Change the World. Today, as per Alexa traffic rankings, Flipkart is among the top 20 Indian Web sites and has been credited with being India's largest online bookseller with over 11 million titles on offer. ...TL1033: Logistics (Part 1 – Introduction to Theory) Level 1 – Semester 2, Bachelor of Transport and Logistics Management Department of Transport and Logistics Management Assessment 1 131448P “Leaders win through logistics. Vision, sure. Strategy, yes. But when you go to war, you need to have both toilet paper and bullets at the right place at the right time. In other words, you must win through superior logistics.” - Tom Peters The word logistics was used in warfare where logistics became a pivotal technique to win the game. In that case most of the military logistics literatures of early periods were delivered the tactics and insights to work in complex environments (McGinnis, 1992) where the flow of material and information become vital. This basic phenomenon was integrated into the business and currently logistics acts as a central and essential feature of all economic activities (Christopher, 1986). The importance of logistics can be understood by its evolution. Earlier, flow of material was under different and fragmented activities such as purchasing, warehousing, transportation and etc. Then it became material and distribution management, and thereafter it has moved towards linking it to integrated logistics (Ballou, 2007). All these integrations to intent and purposes were to reduce costs incurred through logistics activities as logistics costs were seemed to be higher than any other cost of business activities. As an example, national level logistics cost of...

...enables informational technologies to fuse with logistic. In this fast growing global economy, e-logistics has been appeared to overcome the informational barriers in the supply chain. This essay indents to bring an interpretation of the “old economy” logistics with "new generation" logistics. Firstly, the essay explains the definitions of the e-logistics and also analyses the differences between e-logistics and traditional logistics. INTRODUCTION Oscar Morgenstern proposed logistics as a discipline in science economy. Until the Second World War, logistics was considered as a science using for military services. Now logistics is considered as a civil science. The developmental stages of logistics can be categories as military logistics, business logistics and e-logistics. Among these stages, e- logistics can be considered as the latest stage of this industry. Nowadays, e-logistics has been discussed as electronic logistics, which uses the web technology as inevitable tool to administer some of the sectors of logistic industry or the whole process (Wang Wei, 2003); according to Prof. Zhai Xuewei, e-logistics is the combination of logistics supporting e-commerce and the electronic technology for logistics (Sun Chao, 2002). In this juncture, e-logistics can be regarded as e-logistic commerce, in which information flow is combined in the form of electronic technology, network technology and automation. ...Logistics Management Division’s VSV Program Strengthens Internal Controls Launched in September 2013, the Office of Administration, Logistics Management Division’s Virtual Site Visit (VSV) program is a comprehensive review of an office’s compliance with policies and procedures in the Logistics Management areas of operation. It is intended to reduce the number of findings from audits, Inspectors General reports and other internal and external reviews of compliance. It replaces the traditional physical site assistance visit in a time of dwindling travel budgets, while enabling Office of Administration to continue one-on-one engagement with agency offices. To date, we have conducted 18 VSV’s, with a slate of eight underway for FY 2016. To develop the program, we reviewed every Logistics Management policy, procedure, handbook, branded form and guidance document to develop measurable performance criteria. The result is a 40-item checklist covering 14 areas of operation, including personal property, physical inventory, fleet, leased copiers and transit subsidy. Each item in the checklist features specific policy references, evaluation criteria, data sampling and/or analysis methodology and objective performance benchmarks. The program is entirely virtual, requiring no physical presence, and is managed using existing agency technologies, including the Enterprise Collaboration Network (ECN), AT&T Connect and Lync. The VSV is not an audit, rather it is a review program intended...

...Challenges with Original Xbox Microsoft encountered many challenges when launching the original Xbox in 2001. To better understand these challenges, we adopt the SOSTACTM (Situation analysis, Objective Setting, Strategy, Tactics, Actions and Control) framework developed by Paul Smith to summarize the Supply Chain Management (SCM) strategy. Situation Analysis Microsoft did not have a presence in the gaming console market and was up against strong competitors which already had established markets such as Sony (Playstation) and Nintendo (GameCube). This competitive landscape put them in a position wherein the company needed to develop a product which offered features that were comparable to existing products in the market place and priced perfectly so that they can establish the Xbox in the market. Moreover, it was critical to launch in time for the 2001 holiday season to allow Xbox to have a presence in the marketplace before it became up against the “next-generation product”. Thus, Microsoft’s early challenges came at a price of high production ramp up costs because it needed to produce 100,000 consoles in a week in order to launch the new Xbox in time for Christmas. Objective For Microsoft, the original Xbox was primarily aimed at entering the gaming console market, learning from the experience and paving the way for the next generation of products. Strategy Microsoft adopted a push supply chain strategy using an extended supply chain. It developed its products...

...A leader of Logistics and Supply chain management: Ronald H. Ballou Chen Wang University of Windsor ELIP 3 Section 7 Instructor: Mary Wheeler Introduction: Background information Logistics and supply chain management, as a vital business activity, to some extent, has became a new core of business management today, compared with traditional fields such as finance, marketing, and production. Being a theoretical expert and practical leader in the field, Ronald H. Ballou, who is the professor of Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, has been standing at the top level in modern logistics’ research and application. In academic research, he published more than 50 articles in professional logistics journals and teaching materials he wrote has been using in relative teaching fields. In application area, he is a welcomed consultant to many companies on logistics issues. He is the model of theory- practice bond in the fields. Issue identification It is obvious that there are various components of a typical logistics system, such as inventory control, material handling, plant and warehouse site selection, packaging, traffic and transportation, etc.. Song (2007, p. 11) states that whether these procedures can be reasonably and exactly designed is the key to companies cutting down their costs and creating more value. In simpler words, it refers to reducing redundant spaces and wasteful time. Upon this, Ronald H. Ballou developed the computer software...

...Logistics Written Assignment 3 * How does the warehouse location decision affect the rest of the logistic decisions? With costs exploding in the market, the location of a warehouse is crucial for an organization’s profitability. In a well-designed supply-chain location is of supreme importance. Selection not only impacts the supply chain it also has a significant impact on future cash flows. As with any individual logistics activity, management must always ensure that the logistics system as a whole benefits from the chosen warehousing strategy. In other words, the costs of the building and maintaining the warehouse have to be less than the benefit the firm is receiving. When the location is chosen, management has to decide whether they want to support multiple markets from one centralized warehouse or place a facility in each market. Once the question of centralization is addressed, the decision of how many warehouses comes into play. Then management must look into warehouse alternatives such as private warehousing, contract warehousing, or public warehousing. This decision is based on the type of warehouse functions are needed by the firm (i.e. receiving, put-away, storage, replenishment, order selection, etc.). Also on whether the warehouse is going to serve the firm as a place for gathering / consolidation or break-down function. If they choose a private warehouse, a one level warehouse facility is most recommended but that also depends on location and what...

...Report - Automotive Logistics India 2010 - Automotive Logistics India http://www.automotivelogisticsindia.com/82/Report/[10-12-2010 00:00:14] CONFERENCE 2009: Market boom, but where are the 3PLs? PUNE 2-4 December 2009: As delegates assembled in Pune, India’s car sales figures for November were released – and they made startling reading. Growth is back in India: market leader Maruti Suzuki saw sales jump 60% over the same month in 2008 (though only 17% up on 2007); Tata Fiat was up 55%; Hyundai up 93%; GM up 65%; and Mahindra more than doubled at 102%. The figures confirm that late 2008 was just a brief pause in the upward trajectory of car production and sales. But logistics is groaning under the strain. Both speakers and delegates lamented the low cost/low investment logistics model which exists in the automotive sector in India. OEMs called for a significant increase in the low level of involvement from sophisticated 3PLs. ...Project : Logistics Control Tower Objective: To design a Logistics Control Tower Solution for E-Commerce Companies Write-up: A control tower is a single command centre for visibility, decision-making, and action, based on real-time data. It’s a powerful cloud service providing a comprehensive unified prospective of your business; top-down to bottom-up. Cross functional team can now rely on a single product to plan, monitor and respond to all business challenges (in this case all issues occur in logistics) quickly, collaboratively enabling you to measure the impact of changes, study response scenario, recalibrate strategies and envision what’s coming down the road, allowing you to see and know it all at the same time. With the help of control tower, Company (and supply chain) will come to be recognized not as a collection of separate functions but as a system in which the flows of information, materials, manpower, capital equipment, and money setup forces that determine the basic tendencies towards growth, fluctuation, and decline. A Supply Chain Control Tower system includes a dedicated team of people responsible for monitoring the alerts of the tower and for taking action when the tower predicts an incident may happen or if an incident already happened. This designated team is delegated the authority to make real time decisions based on the alerts and recommendations reported by the Control Tower. A properly structured Control Tower must be “armed with both the ability to determine...

...FEDEx and UPS suggestions: Since FEDEx and UPS uses a fleet of more than 50 aircrafts for logistics, the ERP module of Flight Cargo with Auto load plan option can be very useful in seamless handling of flight cargo. Today freight forwarders need to quickly dispatch to the point of delivery in order to facilitate their supply chain management and the airlines that can meet these challenges are the airlines that will be called upon to move cargo. While selecting an Aircraft for Cargo Loading, system prepares automated Load Plan according to capacity of cargo by prioritizing AWB and sending automated cargo loading email alerts to all Shippers. The system has removed hurdle of communication between Operation and WMS staff while receiving cargo into Warehouse which was one of the main challenges in the trade. After completing automated plan the system locks all AWB and only authorized user could unlock them for editing or other purposes. The software provides the functionality to produce Flight departure report with all necessary details i.e. Flight departure time, total cargo loaded into Aircraft, type of Equipment used by ground handling staff etc. The main features of this module are: Built-in "Fax & Email Feature" allow customers to receive arrival notices. Tracking/Tracing Information via the Internet, as an option, benefits you and your customers. Gross profitability report; flight wise / consignment wise. Invoicing of whole flight.
