...The Sandarian Crisis On a planet distanced from everything else in the universe where there was once peace and happiness amongst the sandarian race, who consisted of robots, there was a horde of horrible creatures that ruled the lands. These large powerful creatures were engulfed by a madness that had driven them for decades. Their evil-mindedness came from a once great Sandar whom was obsessed with the idea that beyond their little planet, there was something. Something that might become a great threat to their perfect planet. This Sandar went by the name of Flusk. Flusk then developed what he saw as his life’s work, a secret weapon that would protect the planet from any danger that they might encounter. He then presented his ultimate weapon to the sandarian government but they were terrified at the sight of this horrifying creature Flusk had created and told him that they would never allow such creature to live on their planet, because it would only spread fear and unhappiness to their society. So they sentenced Flusk and his creature to death. Flusk didn’t see any horror or cause of fear by his creation but was forever amazed by the magnificence of this weapon that would provide safety for all eternity, in his opinion. So he was furious when he heard that his mere intention of providing security for his fellow citizens would sentence him to death. Flusk’s mind turned evil. Through telepathic skills that Flusk had developed between him and the creature, he ordered it to...

...The Ransom of Red Chief The Ransom of Red Chief It is funny how things do not always work out the way we expect them to. No matter how long we plan or how impossible we think something may be, it can still happen. Bill and Sam thought they had an easy job and easy money right in front of them. O. Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief” represents irony as the desperation of two men, a kid’s hellish imagination get the best of them, and the bond between father and son are over estimated. Bill and Sam had only six hundred dollars between the both of them and they needed two thousand more to pull a scheme in Illinois. They had the bright idea to kidnap a kid and get the two thousand as a ransom. They wrote out the ransom note after having held the boy captive over night in a cave and they signed it “two desperate men.” Bill had been going out of his mind dealing with the boy’s wild imagination. He was about to break down and walk away without the money; he had enough. O. Henry: Red Chief was sitting on Bill’s chest, with one hand twined in Bill’s hair. In the other he had the sharp case-knife we used for slicing bacon; and he was industriously and realistically trying to take Bill’s scalp, according to the sentence that had been pronounced upon him the even before (281.) They were no longer desperate for the money but desperate to give the boy back. They lowered the ransom to only fifteen hundred because they realized no one would pay two thousand dollars for the return of “that...

...Angie Berlinski English 101 April 23, 2012 Altering public space Altering public space In the essay “Black men and Public Space” by Brent Staples, he talks about how being a black man alters public space in a negative way. Altering public space is changing how a person, place, or thing makes you feel. It can be negative, but it also can be positive. Some positive ways altering public space can be a friendly smile walking into a room, beautiful new constructions, and planting trees to better the environment. But with good, there’s always bad. Ways of altering public space in a bad way is Staples discovery of this comes during a late-night encounter. A young white female, whom Staples labels “my first victim” (197), was walking down the street in front of Staples and was not comfortable with the space he provided for her. After a couple of glances back and changes in her pace, she soon began running and disappeared down a side street. Of course, Staples had no intention of robbing or in any way harming this woman. He was just taking a walk, just as she was. Sometimes these kinds of aspects of life are just inevitable. It can be unfair and hard to deal with, but these situations happen in our everyday lives. Nevertheless, this was a fairly well to do neighborhood. Apparently, this woman figured that if a black man did find himself in this part of town, he was most likely up to something. Not wanting any trouble, she decided to get out of harm’s way. ...

...yra sanchez Professor combads English 1A 26 May 2013 In a different pair of eyes In the story The Sunflower, written by Simon Wiesenthal, discusses his life changing experience during the Holocaust. Like any other prisoner, he is taken to a hospital in a group to clean up for trash. While at the hospital, he meets a dying Nazi soldier, by the name of Karl. He listens to his story about what he has done to Jews, the people he’s killed, and his mother. They later have a unique connection with each other. Although, when he’s done telling his story, he asks Wiesenthal for forgiveness and ends up passing away. Wiesenthal remains silent, but later questions himself about his experience whether or not he should have accepted his apology. If I were in his situation, I would have not remained silent and forgave the Nazi soldier because he was not promoting any action of hate, rather than forgiveness, my moral values, and my own experiences. A writer that does not reflect my point of view is Herbert Marcuse. Marcuse states that Wiesenthal should not have forgiven the soldier because it perpetuates the crime. I do not agree with his view completely because in this case, the entire government was promoting evil and majority of people were brainwashed. Also Karl was a growing up child and comprehended the propaganda from a very early age. He was not trying to promote any type of war, but rather forgiveness. For example, when he had asked for forgiveness, Wiesenthal had second...

...lolo lolol lolol lolo The graph also demonstrates the historically high rating the shares currently enjoy. In our Annual Report last year we set out the criteria by which we would decide the maximum price we would pay to buy back shares. We introduced the concept of Equivalent Rate of Return (ERR). ERR is the return required from an alternative investment, if that investment were to produce the same level of earnings enhancement as the proposed buyback. We set the minimum ERR at 8%, which we consider a reasonable target for a return on equity investments. In November last year, as our shares continued to rise, the ERR on share buybacks fell below the 8% threshold. As a result, we introduced rolling special dividends in place of buybacks. We intend to continue distributing surplus cash through special dividends, paid on a quarterly basis, until such time as the ERR rises above 8%. Whilst the underlying financial objective of the Group remains unchanged in principle, the introduction of special dividends mean that our financial goal is now better expressed as the delivery of long term sustainable growth in Total Shareholder Returns; where Total Shareholder Returns are defined as growth in EPS added to the total annual dividend yield. The graph also demonstrates the historically high rating the shares currently enjoy. In our Annual Report last year we set out the criteria by which we would decide the maximum price we would pay to buy back shares. We introduced...
