1.) In the memoir, look me in the eye: my life with asperger’s, by John Elder Robison there are several points that seem to be significant in the development of his interpersonal self regulation. Identify one of these time points (please use page numbers) and explain how you think this is an example of a shift in interpersonal self regulation. (10 points) Throughout his memoir, Robison recounts upon his inability to communicate socially and his desire for fluid interpersonal skills. He notices that people who are extroverts and are socially capable often “go far in life because interpersonal skill is one of the most important predictors of success” (207). As he grows and becomes more socially capable, he is able to recognize his interpersonal shortcomings and work to change his awkward habits. Because of this, he inherently has more social problems when he is a young boy. “Starting at about six years of age, [he] learned not to submit [him]self to repeated humiliation from people and institutions” (239). Unfortunately, humiliation was the impetus for Robison’s education in interpersonal self-regulation. In chapter 3, Empathy, Robison’s mother has one of her friends over. She comments on a tragedy of someone’s son being killed by a train while playing on train tracks. For lack of an understanding of social and emotional norms, Robison decides to smile at this remark. “She turned to me with a shocked expression on her face. ‘What! Do you think that’s funny?’ I felt embarrassed and a little humiliated. ‘No, I guess not” (29). His response, “No, I guess not”, is key because this is how he learned, through embarrassment and humiliation, that it is not acceptable to find humor in one’s tragic death. For Robison, learning interpersonal self-regulation skills is a bumpy road of learning from his mistakes and differences.
2.) Identify one example of the use of suppression or re-appraisal in the memoir. Please provide the page number from the text. Do you think Robison’s skill in re-appraisal changes over the course of the text? Support your answer with evidence from the text. (10 points) Examples of Robison’s use of re-appraisal are evident in chapter 9, I Drop Out of High School. In this chapter, Robison does a lot of critical thinking because parts of his life, primarily family life and academics, are falling apart. He goes through various decision-making processes and uses re-appraisal techniques to guide the decisions. He has to make heads or tails of his parents, who are each crazy, and decide which one of them is right in their assumptions about the other one. He actually grew to doubt his mother’s predictions that his father would kill his family (86). He “lurched” from one parent to another because his judgments were constantly being reorganized by their crazy actions. “It seemed like everyone told [him] a different story” (87). Here he is constantly re-appraising his family life and his role in the family. He also uses re-appraisal techniques when decides to drop out of school and leave home. When offered a diploma after passing his GED test in the 96 percentile, Robison decides he doesn’t need a diploma, “and [he] never looked back” (90).
3.) In the chapter Interpersonal Functioning Requires Self Regulation (Chapter 20) Handbook of Self Regulation: Research Theory and Applications the authors describe three areas of interpersonal functioning. These are within person interpersonal processes, dyadic interpersonal functioning and group membership. Each of these areas is further developed into research topic areas (for example in the area of functioning within person interpersonal processes there is a set of research describing regulatory focus, they are listed below). Pick one of these research topic areas that is of interest to you.
Briefly describe the research topic area and then select an example of behavior from the memoir that illustrates the topic. Explain why you think the example from the memoir illustrates the research topic. (10 points)
The study about group rejection in Interpersonal Function Requires Self Regulation states that people who are rejected from groups display poorer self-regulation than those who are not rejected. Self-regulation is impaired by social exclusion. The study provided a necessary step in determining whether self-control failure accounts for antisocial tendencies among the socially rejected. This is supported in Robison’s memoir when he becomes a trickster in grade schools. “About this time, I figured out one way to capitalize on my differences from the mass of humanity. In school, I became the class clown. Out of school, I became the trickster” (35). Because of his rejection from social groups and his impaired ability to connect with people, Robison became a troublemaker. His self-regulatory strength was taxed as a result of being exiled, which resulted in the deregulation of his actions.

Look Me in the Eye

...Look me in the Eye Starting this novel was more difficult than expected. Reading the prologue took the longest time, and prepared me for a boring book. However, as I continued to read this, I found that it was interesting. Many people who had read this book previously told me it was humorous, but I found it to be more informative, learning about a new disorder and how a young child faces it. John Elder Robison allows the readers to feel the sorrow with him when his mother and father’s fighting is mentioned, but also allows the readers to laugh with him when he pranks all his family members. Since, I didn’t know much about asperger’s, this book really opened my eyes. It’s a kind of book that a reader will remember for a long time, recommend it and continue to read it multiple times. Having to read about problems that involve children is always a sensitive issue, but this book explains it well. I found myself reading certain paragraphs over and over again so I could fully comprehend the situation that John Elder Robison was in. Readers find out how hard it is to live with asperger’s. For both family members and the child. It shows the true meaning of patience and tolerance. Although, John Elders father could not cope with the stress and became an alcoholic, it shows how difficult it is to raise an autistic child. It shows the amount of commitment it takes, a quality trait that not all parents have. The first five chapter of John Elders novel have caught my attention...

...to believe that I am blind from my right eye. For fourteen years I have been living a normal life without seeing from my right eye. I’d say for about six or seven years I would cry when people asked me what happened or just stare at me and talk about, well my eye. It was really hard for me but like my mom says, “You are a strong beautiful girl, you are better than them, and plus those are just words. And hey, if they keep talking their nonsense, then say something back, don’t just stay quiet. Look up for yourself.” Freshman year was the most exciting, scariest and adventurous year for me. I never knew how much people would care who you talk to or hang out with, you know, all the stuff you see on TV. I thought it was just entertainment but no; I was living it for real. As usual we introduce each of us to the class and talk about each other. Well when I was up in the front talking some guy interrupted me and said, “Ha ha look, she has a lazy eye.” Some students laughed and said other things. Of course the teacher sent him to the office. As I was standing in the front, I was just starring at them laugh and say other things. I wanted to cry SO badly, but my mom’s words came to mind and I just went to my desk and sat down quietly. Throughout the summer, going to my sophomore year, I had gotten more aggressive. Not mean or anything for no reason, I just stood up for myself. I was tired of people laughing or making horrible comments about me. Math is something I enjoy doing and learning...

Reasons Why I Cant Look a Person in the Eyes

...The Reason Why I Can’t Look a Person in the Eye In grade nine, during semester two I had gym last period. It had been a long day, I was exhausted and I just wanted to finish this class and go home. To make everything so much worse we were going to be playing a game that I absolute hated. Soccer-baseball. Both classes were standing in one large circle, while the teacher with boorish brown eyes, was in the middle yelling out instructions. Her voice echoed throughout the huge gym, as she was saying “Everyone has to pick a partner!” and so on. So I looked over to my good friend faith with glamorous green eyes. And mouthed “want to be partners”, and she mouthed back “sure”. So I smiled to myself, until I caught the glimpse of the boy standing beside me, just staring at me, with considerable, confused, brown eyes. Now you see this boy was supposed to be very popular, everyone knew his name, (but I seemed to have forgotten) and everyone thought that he was funny. Even I chuckled at his resistance to a teacher’s demand, his English presentations, and his sarcastic comments during class. So of course I looked back at him into his eyes, and then whispered impatiently to him “what do you want?” he looked at me all wide eyed and pointed at himself. At first I didn’t understand, and then I realized he must have thought that I was taking to him, when I asked faith to be partners. So I shook my head and mouthed “No”, then pointed to faith. His gaze followed my finger...

Eye Contact

...Homework On Eye Contact I read the article, “Just Look Me in the Eye ” and wondered, how true! This is exactly what the era of technology has done to the nature of personal conversations. The paired activity we had in our last class was quite interesting too. It helped me realize that holding eye contact for more than 20 seconds was very uncomfortable. It made me question a lot of things in my mind such as if my looks are okay or if my smile is perfect or am I too stiff, however the moment our professor rephrased the activity by telling that we had to make the other person feel comfortable, the equation in my mind changed instantly, I became relaxed, tried smiling and making I guess funny faces to make my partner feel comfortable and good. I believe, eye contact helps you establishing a deeper connect with the person you are speaking to. In case of professional relationships it tends to make your conversations more real and add a personalized touch. While in personal relationships, it makes you feel good, accepted and most importantly understood. And in intimate relationships, it helps you create romance and love. As the proverb goes, the eyes are the windows of the soul. When introduced to someone new, it helps you sending information across your acquaintance whether you are really interested to hold a conversation. It is always polite to keep brief eye contact and offer either a nod or a smile. That makes it look like a welcome sign. On the other hand, it can be really...

...from downstairs; I take one more look at my choice of outfit before going to the kitchen and eating my breakfast. "Where's dad?" I look up at my mum to see her over happy face, how can she be so happy about this? "He's gone to work; a different job means a different schedule."
