Looking at Libraries

One of the busiest areas in any core collection is fiction and in the O library in particular, thrillers are most of the patrons’ favorite books to enjoy. John Grisham, Lee Child and James Patterson are some of the authors whose almost entire works we carry. The quantity of the thriller area can be labeled about a 4 out of 5, with a 5 being excellent. The quality can vary as there are always books being weeded due to the fiction area being so impacted. It seems that many of the thrillers are checked out by our older patrons which is a big demographic in the community. Because the community is in San Diego and so close to the Mexico- US border, there is a big Spanish core collection that tries to cater to those who do not feel entirely confident in English. The Spanish picture books are a specialized collection that is always advertised and always asked about to/by patrons. Many of them want their children to continue speaking their native language or some are trying to teach their children that language. The overall rating of the collection is a 3 out of 5 because even though the collection is big and extensive, the quality could be improved. Many of the books are old (some more than 20 years old) and many are damaged (drawn on, tears, etc.). This is an important collection because it is so popular and it is one that I think needs to be updated and evaluated. Lastly, cookbooks are an area that patrons gravitate towards because there are many different types of cookbooks available for everyone. Mexican food is one of the areas that is most requested and where many “looky-looks” usually take a look around. Because this area is so specialized there is such a big variety of ethnic foods and even though there are many books, the books are old and out of date. The collection is ranked a 2 because of the quality of the book. The new book area has many cookbooks but because the area is separate from the core collection then I do not believe it counts as a certain specialized area. There is a separate area for Spanish dvds and cds. The cds are very popular and many of our patrons take advantage of the many option we have. The dvds unfortunately are floating, meaning that they wherever they get returned is their new home, so they are never in a specific library for too long. Because of this we cannot really take inventory on which titles are most popular where. Thanks to our ever changing databases available through the San Diego public library web site, Rosetta Stone is now available to for our patrons to use and learn with if and only if they have a library card. Ranging from Japanese to Russian to Spanish and Portuguese, patrons have access to many languages to learn at their own home. Only downside? It is only level one but nothing beats learning the basics of a new language. The core and special collection at the Otay Mesa Library needs to be evaluated again I believe, there is a lot of potential and many other needs that need to be accessed to the community. Now that the city has open up their budget and given the library more money we have gotten the extended hours many have asked and hopefully that will funnel down to the collection each library houses.

...Gathering academic information Task One: Library Catalogue The library catalogue lists all the material, both in print and online, available in the Universities libraries. The easiest way to access a specific electronic journal or electronic book is via the library catalogue. 1. Open up a web browser and login to the Digital University page. You should see a library section; click on the library home page link. 2. Click on the library catalogue: ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- What is an academic journal? ------------------------------------------------- Think of journals as academic magazines. Journals can be published monthly, quarterly or annually and they contain the latest ideas and research in a subject discipline. Journals usually publish a number of issues during a year, which are then collected into a numbered volume. You will be expected to read journal articles in addition to books. Some journals have a broad scope and others have a more specific focus. Note also, that journals do not always have the word ‘Journal’ in their title; however you can usually identify a reference to a journal article as it will contain a year, possibly a volume number and a page number in addition to the article title and journal title. An example of an article reference from the journal Academy of Management Journal: ------------------------------------------------- Raffiee, J. (2014) “Should I quit...

Information Technology

...federal funding to support libraries if the libraries do not implement both Internet safety policies and implement filters for certain objectionable material which can be accessed over the Internet” (Online Libraries & Microcomputers, 2001). In other words congress wants to control the people of the United States and what they look at online, in a public place. If congress passed this law, it would impact research for education, personal, and professional use. Additionally, this is unethical because the US government should not impose control over what the public has access to on the internet. The United States Government wants to use information technology in public places to monitor the people by what they look at online. By doing so, institutions like public libraries or public schools would have difficulties in completing research due to the restrictions placed by the US Government. Many people go to libraries to use the computers provided to the public to complete research, write papers, or log on to the internet. Less fortunate people that cannot afford a computer or the internet, would be impacted the most. Someone who has a computer and access to internet at home would be able to look up anything they wanted without having restrictions. By only implementing this law at public libraries, how would this stop children from looking up negative topics on the internet? I believe that it would not. It would simply mitigate the issue at public libraries, but not in homes of the...

Library Experience

... October 11, 2013 My Library Experience Coming to Houston Community College was a huge blur for me. No one told me it was going to be a confusing mess. Also, no one told me the people working there were not friendly and were not helpful; I had to find that out by myself. I had no idea what college was going to be like. The only thing that I found helpful was going to The Leaning Hub class and learning about the library and how they work. Coming to The Learning Hub class showed me ways that I can get information on books, find books, and get a book transferred to a campus close to me. Upon going to The Learning Hub class, I though Houston Community College’s libraries were regular city libraries. Once I got into The Learning Hub class I found out that that was completely wrong. As I sat there listening to Mr. Hord talk about how to begin to look for a book, I found that being in a library at a HCC was going to be the most helpful place in college. When looking for a book at a Houston Community College Library you have to begin with what the title or topic the novel is written about, then go online at the Houston Community College library homepage and type the topic or title in. Once you find the novel you are looking for you can check and see which campuses hold the book, you can see if it is in transit, checked out or requested. If the novel is there at the campus you are at, there is a call number that you can use to find your book in the library. An example of the Call...

Men and Women Are so Different When Shopping

...needle in a haystack. Is that true? Was the library of the 19th century more efficient? Explain. I will disagree on the fact that searching for information on Google is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I will sustain my disagreement, because if you know how to type the proper sentence of what we are looking for it will simplify the search. We must know exactly what kind of information we are looking for. We must empathize in which direction our search is going to. Also we must learn how to identify a valid and legitimate web site, by following the security criteria of the important elements which leads us into a secure web site. This secure rules like verifying the author’s biography, if the web site is supported by any government organizations, etc. The Library of 19th century was less efficient in fact of time saver, and accuracy of information, but I believe turns the new student generation into lazy brains. This new generation doesn’t know about reading books, looking for information by alphabetic order. The 2000 generation only knows about Google, Bing and search. How is searching in specific database, such as Ashford’s library, different from searching in Bing, Google, or Yahoo? First of all, Ashford’s University is a property database, (is the data base accessible only to someone who pays for a subscription or belongs to an institution, Bowles M., 2010). Second, I will state the information found at Ashford’s library is totally trustful, because the institution...

...both librarians and teachers alike “focus on building your library with additions of recently published, high-quality urban literature”. She also states that it is important for people in a position of power to take the time to read urban-focused literature in order to become acquainted with its authors and sub-genres. The most important thing a librarian or teacher can do is try to relate to their patrons and students. This helps build a solid foundation for learning. In a recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, about 14 percent of the United States population have no ability to read and a staggering 21 percent of the United States population reads at or below...

Histories of the World

...About Digital Libraries Library users increasingly expect everything to be immediately available on the web, free of charge at each point of service and coupled with the assurance of permanent access. At a cross-cultural level, libraries, museums and archives work together to a growing extend, to make their digital collections and objects available on the web for a large audience, very often through one central access point, a so called portal or digital library. IFLA recognizes the current shift of many libraries from analogue to digital, and increasingly includes digital libraries in its strategic agenda. This focus will be achieved not only by looking at the digitisation process as such, but also at strategies for providing long term access to digital content. At the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Milan in 2009, the IFLA Professional Committee together with the Italian government organized a one-day conference on digital libraries which focused on the user perspective and the way in which cultural heritage institutions and publishers respond to the digital shift in the library world. As a result of this conference the IFLA Professional Committee drew up a vision statement for IFLA to form the basis to position and connect digital libraries related activities within the IFLA organisation.  This vision is formulated as follows: To employ the fullest potential of digital technology in partnership with users by enabling seamless and open access to all types...

Library of Congress Relevance to School Libraries

...Library of Congress Relevance to School Libraries Donna Smith University of North Texas SLIS 5208 Library of Congress Relevance to School Libraries Introduction The Library of Congress (LOC) plays a momentous role in acquirement, distribution, and preservation of America’s historical and current documents like books, journals, political manuscripts (like the declaration of independence rough draft), government publications, map, films, sound recording, photographic images, and films. LOC was established in America in the first decade of the nineteenth century to act as a researching facility for inquiries made by Congress (Santella, 2006). However, after many years the facility has grown to become a leading institution that encourages reading and literacy among students and the general public. LOC is pertinent in encouraging research of critical information among students by improving information opportunities accessible to students so that they can utilize their potential present times. The twenty-first century is faced with intricate life and work setting and for this reasons, learning and innovation skills have emerged as the qualities that separate students who are prepared to face these challenges and those who are not. The role played by the LOC is evidenced by U.S integral and superb government structure that has existed for years and rated as the best in the world. LOC success can act as a model for...

A Reflection Upon It All

...that true? Was the library of the 19th century more efficient? Explain. How is searching in a specific database, such as Ashford’s library, different from searching in Bing, Google, or Yahoo? The founder of Wikipedia has a noble mission – to share the entire world’s information with everyone everywhere, anytime. In what ways has this mission been successful? In what ways has it not been successful? It is defiantly a tough challenge when trying to research certain information that is needed. In my personal opinion I consider it to be a very tough task indeed. Once the information is gathered from Google, then the part of trying to determine is the information is accurate, credible, or more reliable to put in a research paper. Google is the main and most popular website for information, but yet you will at times still come across some misleading information that is not allowed for academic research papers. The web at times can mislead us with certain information missing and misconceptions. Belgian lawyer Paul Otlet in the 19th century understood that each profession was experiencing a substance growth of data. Science was above all the drawback as a result of the increasing publications of such. Otlet believed that the number of publications was growing rapidly for any scientist to remain informed of a certain field. There was so much data that scientists could not find what they required. Otlet believed he had at last found what his life was looking for. Several index...
