Lopez V. United States In 1994 Alfonzo Lopez, a high school student from San Antonio Texas carried a concealed firearm onto school grounds. Alfonzo was charged under Texas law with the possession of a firearm onto school grounds. The charge was later dropped after federal agents charged him with violating the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990. Lopez was found guilty and was sentenced with six months of imprisonment and a two year probation. The court ruled five votes to four in Lopez’s favor. William Rehnquist wrote the decision stating that the “Gun-Free Zone Act was unconstitutional and exceeded the limited powers of Congress under the Constitution” (PBS 1). The decision overturned Lopez’s conviction. I believe the Supreme Court ruled fairly in the Lopez v. United States case. Congress has the power to regulate actions that directly affect interstate commerce. However the Interstate Commerce act doesn’t have the power to create Gun-Free Zones in schools. The government claimed that possessing a firearm could change the national economy in days. If this was true, then the federal power would be limitless, the commerce act would extend to all activities that could result to a violent crime. The possession of guns in a school zone is not an economic activity that affects interstate commerce. The Commerce Act tried to control guns when it isn’t inside their jurisdiction, the commerce act controls trading between states but not where a gun is and isn’t permitted. The dissenting party had argued that there would be more gun related school violence if it weren’t for the commerce act. Gun-Free zones don’t deter away psychopaths, instead it disarms law abiding citizens and asks for a shooting to happen. The reason so many shootings happen is because even a psychopath knows that the easiest place to strike is a location with zero guns and zero threats. Take for example James Holmes, James planned his theater massacre in advance. There were seven theaters he could have chosen however he did not pick the closest or the largest. Instead James picked the one that banned concealed weapons (National 1). Would you feel any safer putting up a gun-free zone at your house? The chances are probably not so why put them in public? Gun-free zones flag areas that are easy targets for somebody looking to kill. If you step into a killers shoes, where would you rather strike? A school that has gun-free zone posters or a gun shop where everybody is inevitably wielding some sort of firearm? The obvious answer is the defenseless school where there may be a school police officer at best.
Another prime example is Chicago, our third largest city in th

...Jennifer Lopez’s Musical Influence on Society Written By: Samantha Yurchak Mr. Smith 7th Hour English 9A December 4, 2008 Samantha Yurchak Mr. S. Smith English 9A 7th hour 4 December, 2008 Jennifer Lopez’s Influence on Teenage Girls Jennifer Lopez, also known as JLo, influenced many teenage girls during the 1990‘s into the 2000‘s. She has been one of the big trend setters and a very well known actress and singer. In the previous decade many famous mommies were forming a new trend known as the baby bump. Instead of wearing maternity clothes they would simply just show off their growing bellies. This set off a major trend that is now worn all over the United States. Recent articles have revealed that some teens don’t think this is appropriate. “Women shouldn’t reveal themselves like that. What do you think its teaching our children? To go out and get pregnant so they can look cool?” (Hillary Tharp) From her comment you can see that a lot of people don’t think that some of the trends famous people set aren’t very appropriate. But some teenagers might have a different story. “ It’s not that we want to get pregnant to look cool, it’s just that all the people involved in that trend have shown us how to always look like a star. Even when we feel our worst, they have shown us that no matter what we can look sexy.” (Claire Vermont) Parents should be able to trust their children. If they’re think that their children are going and getting...

Lopez vs Us

...Facts The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 (GFSZA) made it unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that he knew or had reasonable cause to believe was a school zone. Alfonso Lopez, Jr. (D), a 12th-grade student, carried a concealed and loaded handgun into his high school and was arrested and charged under Texas law with firearm possession on school premises. The next day, the state charges were dismissed after federal agents charged Lopez with violating the Act. The District Court denied Lopez’s motion to dismiss the indictment, concluding that the GFSZA was a constitutional exercise of Congress’ power pursuant to the Commerce Clause of Article I. The Fifth Circuit reversed, holding that the Act exceeded Congress’ power under the Commerce Clause and was therefore unconstitutional. The Supreme Court granted cert. Issues Does the GFSZA exceed Congress’ authority under the Commerce Clause? What categories of activity may Congress regulate under its commerce power? Holding and Rule (Rehnquist) Yes. The GFSZA exceeded Congress’ authority under the Commerce Clause. The three broad categories of activity that Congress may regulate under its commerce power are: a) the use of the channels of interstate commerce; b) Congress is empowered to regulate and protect the instrumentalities of interstate commerce, or persons or things in interstate commerce, even though the threat may come only from intrastate activities; and c) Congress’ commerce authority...

Enough

...certain tit-for-tat level, ''Enough'' might even be seen as a feminist revenge for the stereotyping in ''Fatal Attraction,'' even though both films were written and directed by men. The movie, which opens today nationwide, also exploits an ugly undercurrent of class warfare. Its star, Jennifer Lopez, plays a spunky working-class woman suckered into marriage with a rich yuppie master of the universe who brutally abuses her. In the movie's climax, she faces down her husband in one-on-one combat, armed with brass knuckles and fortified by a crash course in martial arts. Will honest working-class pluck and self-reliance triumph over spoiled upper-class privilege? You don't have to ask. Throughout, Ms. Lopez holds the screen in a star performance that has less to do with acting than with embodying a forceful, streetwise woman who stands up for herself. The movie's yuppie monster, versions of which you may have already met in ''Sleeping With the Enemy'' and ''American Psycho,'' is a handsome, homicidal rageoholic and control freak named Mitch (Billy Campbell), who operates with an unlimited sense of personal entitlement. A successful contractor, he enters the life of Slim (Ms. Lopez), a tough-talking waitress, like a toxic Prince Charming and sweeps her off her feet in an elaborate scam cooked up with...

Music, Poetry, Passion..

...Music, Poetry, Passion… Biko Kennedy Youthlink Writer Album: Love? Artiste: Jennifer Lopez Label: Island Def Jam Music Group Genre: POP/ Dance Release Date: May 3, 2011 About the Album: For many fans of Jennifer Lopez, Love? has been a long time coming. This being the seventh studio album may be her most personal to date, encompassing inspiration from the birth of her twins and her own experiences with love. The highlighted theme throughout the album courses the examination, questioning and discovery of the diverse sides and avenues of love and relationships. It's been a long and twisty road for Love?, having started recording the album in 2009 with an original release date for the project set for January 2010 to coincide with Lopez’s latest film “The Back-up Plan”. However following the lack of success with lead single Louboutins, Lopez and Sony Music Entertainment decided to end their ten year partnership leaving the fate of Love? with Island Def Jam, which boasts an impressive roster of A-list songwriters and producers (such as RedOne and Lady Gaga), as well as guest performers. Here’s a track-by-track rundown: 1. On the Floor (Ft. Pitbull) This moderately-catchy track, aimed for the dance floor, became J.Lo’s first Top 10 hit in eight years. It’s one of the album’s strongest singles, having a bit of a capricious vibe, containing a sample of Los Kjarkas’ song Llorando Se Fue, which was made popular in the Kaoma single Lambada. Lyrically, it follows the typical ‘get...

Stereotypes

...seen very well in particularly “Everybody Hates Chris” and “George Lopez.” In both of this series, the writers make it a huge focus on how stereotypes are given to people with a certain race. Both shows I will analyze to show the positive and negative stereo types that are shown. Everybody Hates Chris is a show that many ethnic groups can connect and relate to. The show is about an African American 13 year old that lives in the projects of New York City. After leaving their old house, the family moves to the “nicer” side of Bed Stuy during a crack epidemic. Instead of going to his local high school, his parents force him to go an all-white high school in the safer part of the city. Chris doesn’t want to go because he will be the only black kid and doesn’t know anybody at the school. During the first day of school Chris is walking down the hallway when a white classmate steps on his shoes and knocks over his textbooks. Next the classmate insults Chris by saying “nice shoes bojangles” and Chris immediately replies “Bojangles? , that’s not what your mother was calling me when I was tap dancing in her pants last night .” The crowd around them gasps in shock and the classmate instantly lands a punch on Chris right in the stomach and falls on the principle. Right after he falls, the principal suspends Chris from school for fighting (Rock, 2012). Another show that all races can relate to is the popular George Lopez Show. The show is about a family orientated Latino man who worked...

Television Family Review

...CWV 101 1/18/2012 George Lopez Family Television Review Introduction I am writing my television review based on the television comedy George Lopez. I am going to write about the family functions and how they interact amongst each other. I will discuss the negative and positive influences the television show has. I will cover the shows view of family and how it has impacted me. I will conclude with a comparison and contrast of the values and actions of the TV family with my own view and experiences, revealing my personal family values. How the Family Functions In the television comedy George Lopez, the characters consist of five main characters. The mother who is a bitter old lady who uses comedic sarcasm to degrade the members of the family in a subtle manner in an effort to feel better about her miserable life, George who always uses jokes to avoid confrontation, serious and important situations, in a continuous battle with his mother over who drove his father away from their family, him(George) being the reason for her(mother) miserable life, and she being the reason for him having so many issues and personal struggles. The wife that is the voice of reason and the back bone that keeps the family on track. The teenage daughter who feels she knows everything, that she should always have her way and nothing maters in this world but her feelings. Last there is Max the younger son with dyslexia who always wants to make his parents proud, longs for approval from...

Influence of Visual Media Paper

...Influence of Visual Media Paper By: Marco Contreras There is a strong link, or interrelationship, between culture and visual entertainment media. Visual entertainment media has been used to depict, and to some extent, influence society and culture. Everything we watch on television, film and even digital gaming has influenced us in one way or another. We can easily see an array of examples of these influences. For instance, Marilyn Monroe was considered a huge “sex symbol.” Visual media created this image of her as the “ideal woman,” thus many other women at the time began to imitate her and her style. Another example is the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez. At one point in time, being “anorexic skinny” was what every woman aspired to be. This changed thanks to the exposure of Jennifer Lopez through visual entertainment media. Her “curvy” body became the “ideal” much like Marilyn Monroe was during her time. As such, many women began to change their concept of what is “sexy” or the “ideal woman.” Unfortunately, not all visual entertainment media’s influence on society has been positive. There have been saddening examples, such as the appearance of the television show “Sixteen and Pregnant.” Instead of learning from the show, young teenage girls began to imitate this behavior. Next thing we know, there was a wave of teenage girls getting pregnant across the country. We see all these music video where sex, drugs, and alcohol are glamorized. Kids think that...

Maximo Oliveros

...t’s not easy to miss the conceit in “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros.” Because of the penchant of Filipino cinema for tearjerkers and comedies tackling the travails, joys and puppy loves of adolescents and teenagers, it seems only a matter of time for our film artists to do more of the same but with a certain refocusing: if straight children could fall in love with adults, why not gay kids? In Maxi, writer Michiko Yamamoto, director Aureus Solito, and producer Raymond Lee have found a character so appealing, so irresistible that they could never go wrong with the movie. And as played by young actor Nathan Lopez, the character is incredibly charismatic. It helps that despite his prettiness, Lopez plays the 12-year-old princess without affectation but with a freshness that could only come from the fact that he’s straight. It could not have been otherwise since Maxi lives in a straight, sordid world. His father (played brilliantly by Soliman Cruz) is a petty thief; he has passed on the trade to Maxi’s “brusko” brothers, Bogs (Neil Ryan Sese) and Boy (Ping Medina). Maxi doesn’t quite become Boney to this family of Clydes since he has stopped schooling in order to keep house and fill it with the scents of his merry cooking and the grace and charm of his presence. He becomes their Ma Barker minus the advanced years, the menacing scowl, and the trigger-happy machine gun. When Maxi is rescued from neighborhood thugs by a kind rookie cop, Victor, (J.R. Valentin), he switches...

Beauty Lies in the Eyes of Beholder

...are so many people involved having similar tastes. Some men prefer dating chubby women with fair complexion while others prefer skinny women with attractive vital stats. Similarly, some women prefer hairy men and find them strong and attractive while some think of such men as virile and repulsive. The concept of beauty has evolved from era to era. In the modern world men and women have different tastes for beauty while people living in early 60’s and 70’s had different tastes for beauty. In the earlier eras women had to be fat to be considered as beautiful as seen in many of the paintings of the Titian. The concept of beauty is again changing gradually with popular actors like Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Jennifer Lopez revealing that a beautiful woman is indeed with curves. As a matter of fact, when we are younger and growing up we admire things that appear beautiful from the outside. We are tempted towards beautiful men and women without considering much about their real inner self. But as we grow and enter into adulthood we start admiring things that are beautiful from the inside. Outer beauty remains no longer the tempting aspect for us. In comparison, the outer beauty diminishes with growing age as wrinkles and blemishes start developing on the body whereas the inner soul remains genuine for the rest of the life no matter how we appear from the outside. The concept of beauty has always been...
