The Declaration of Independence is

defined as "a formal statement written

by Thomas Jefferson declaring the

freedom of the thirteen colonies from

Great Britain." While the thirteen

colonies were declared free from Great

Britain, the abolition of slavery, the act

of ending slavery, was not mentioned

in the Declaration. This is due to Lord

Dunmore's proclamation of the

Declaration of Independence, and the

fear economic failure.

Lord Dunmore's proclamation is one of

the huge reasons that the topic of

slavery was omitted from the

Declaration. Dunmore expressed in his

join the first that would encourage
