Why I support the KONY 2012 campaign

The reality of it all is that this campaign first and foremost advocates CONSCIOUSNESS. It informs the masses of the atrocities occurring around the world. The fact is that the people posting about KONY 2012 are doing so because they NOW know. The reality is that most AMERICANS don’t know SHIT! about the world, and those who do ignore it, since they don’t have a motive to get involved. Even when Hollywood movies like HOTEL RWANDAH and BLOOD DIAMOND clearly show us what the heck is happening, they are still Hollywood-ized. There is a sad glamorization of those events that causes people to watch films like these and still feel disconnected. Simply put ITS AMOVIE. Although to a Rwandan AMERICAN, it’s more than a movie, for some, those scripts were their bedtime stories, told by parents or grandparents who lived though them. If you asked a Salvadoran American about the Civil War in El Salvador, they would be able to give you a great “new” idea for a film about the events, but when other Americans watch that film, it would NOT be reality. While people, have been exposed to similar stories, histories, ancestral past, they still do not know one another stories, because that was NOT what they were exposed to. KONY 2012, in my opinion, simply exposes us to ONE person in the world who is evil. People know/will know about KONY, NOT because he has weapons of mass destruction, NOT because our government has political and financial interest in the country, but because ONE man was EXPOSED to the dire situation of another. This one man had the means and resources of physically being exposed to the hostility and desperation of a society created by colonizing countries like ourselves. Most of us DON’T. Though with access to the Internet, more people can be exposed to it with out having to travel, heck with out ever having to step

Lord of the Rings

...* Intro – present the text and topic - We are going to analyze an excerpt from Lord of the rings, where we hear about Bilbo baggins turning eleventyone 111 and Frodo be coming of age at 33. * What are you going to analyze - We are going to analyze the mysterious circumstances of Bilbo’s age, and why hobbits become of age at 33. * Analysis – what is important? * Frodo becoming of age at 33, could be because of people having such a high life-expectancy. Bilbo’s adventure, and his rich treasures. What kind of treasure he might have stumbled upon on his trip. For example the ring. “Bilbo was very rich and very peculiar, and had been the wonder of the Shire for sixty years, ever since his remarkable disappearance and unexpected return. The riches he had brought back from his travels had now become a local legend, and it was popularly believed, whatever the old folk might say, that the Hill at Bag End was full of tunnels stuffed with treasure. And if that was not enough for fame, there was also his prolonged vigour to marvel at. Time wore on, but it seemed to have little effect on Mr. Baggins. At ninety he was much the same as at fifty. At ninety-nine they began to call him well-preserved, but unchanged would have been nearer the mark. There were some that shook their heads and thought this was too much of a good thing; it seemed unfair that anyone should possess (apparently) perpetual youth as well as (reputedly) inexhaustible wealth. * One may argue that the...

Lord of the Flies

...Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies is a fantasy book that tells the story of what happens to a group of boys stranded on an island after a plane crash. Many events occur while the boys are on the island. Some are good, others are not quite so good, and then there are some events that are just down right horrible. Even though the boys are on an island that seems to be very far away from civilization, almost all of the events that happen are caused by the war that is going on in the adult’s world. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding demonstrates how the wickedness of mankind causes the destruction of the boy’s civilization on the island. There are many events that symbolize how the boy’s civilization was corrupted by mankind. Simon’s death is a good symbol for this because his death was caused by “the beast”. A dead parachuter floated onto the island because he was shot down out of plane from the war and the boy’s called it “the beast”. Simon is the only boy brave enough to get close enough to “the beast” to find out anything more about it, and when he does he finds out that it is just a dead man. Simon goes down to the beach to try to tell the boys what he discover but they are doing their hunting dance, and being caught up in the moment they kill him (52). Simons death illustrates that mankind corrupted the boys civilization because they new it was Simon that they were attacking but they didn’t care. They thought nothing about what they were doing and the consequences that...

Lord of the Flies

...Lord of the Flies Full book report 1. A person’s behaviour is determined by several causes through out his life. The phase already begins when we are born. As a child we’re taught how to behave by our parents. Later on our teachers and surroundings influence our behaviour towards a more and more civilized one. In a society we’re kept as civilized as possible by following rules and laws. If we as human beings are placed away from a society, will we be able to maintain our civilized characters, or will we become savaged barbarians? This is the theme William Golding creates in his novel The Lord of the Flies from 1954. Golding takes his readers on a journey, where he shows what mankind is capable of doing through youngsters. The question is: can the young kids maintain civilization? 2.c. The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of young boys who crash on an island. While they’re stuck on the island they manage to establish some order and civilization by choosing a leader and by using a conch shell to arrange meetings between the boys. The established civilization crumbles as the book goes on because some of the boys can’t control their animalistic qualities. The boys waddle between the human instinct of savagery and the civilized ways of order, which they’re taught from home. Despite the fact that they try to establish order they become more and more drawn towards savagery throughout the book. The sow’s head and the conch shell are both symbols of power, but...

The House of Lords

...House of Lords has existed for about six centuries without reform, some alterations have become necessary in order to bring it into conformity with the changed institutions by which it is surrounded.” – Lord Rosebery, 1884.1 Since Lord Rosebery’s well-known speech there has been much debate about changes in the composition of the House of Lords. Major reforms included the Life Peerages Act 1958 and later the House of Lords Act 1999, which reduced the hereditary members to 92.2 Nevertheless, constitutional experts such as Rodney Brazier argue that the House of Lords continues to be “unelected, unrepresentative and unaccountable.”3 The Coalition Government is therefore working on another reform bill to provide for a wholly or largely elected second chamber. This essay will argue that such a drastic change from a largely appointed to an elected system is too unrealistic to be implemented. Instead, the Government should seek to abolish Prime Ministerial patronage as well as the remaining hereditary members and adopt an independent Appointments Commission that appoints all the members of the upper chamber. To arrive at this conclusion, we will need to analyse which selection method best retains the Lords’ expertise, as well as their independence and representativeness. Then, a discussion follows whether the Lords necessarily ought to be democratically elected to provide a legitimate chamber. Lastly, the possibility of a mixed chamber will be considered. The House of Lords is commonly...

Lord of the Flies

...Lord of the Flies: Literary Analysis In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a plane full of English boys was attacked and crashed onto an island when trying to evacuate a nuclear war. Now the boys must learn to survive and work together. Although they began as a civilized bunch, after conflicts between group leaders Ralph and Jack, savagery starts to emerge. Golding uses the conflict between the civilizations to show how the darkness of human nature can affect even little childrens. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph, described as “the boy with fair hair”, and Piggy a whiney, intellectual chubby boy, found a conch shell which was used to call the other boys who were lost on the island to the beach. Among the boys was a choir group led by a boy named Jack. Ralph was soon elected as leader seeing as being the one who called everyone together. Jack was in charge of the choir group to hunt for food. After countless failure of capturing a pig, Jack decided to paint his face with clay to be camouflaged from the pig. He lead the boys and finally killed his first of pig and came back to the group with the pig strapped to a stick and the boys chanting, “ Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood!”(69). We can see how excited the boys got from killing a measly pig. Jack describes his experience with Ralph explaining, “ There was lashings of blood...you should have seen it!”(69). Jacks thirst for more blood is an obvious sign of the development of savagery. Later...

House of Lords

...The House of Lords an effective institution? an effective institution? Introduction Since the reform of the House of Lords in 1999 by Tony Blair’s ‘New Labour’ government, the status and legislative scope of the ‘upper house’ has steadily risen. Its role as a ‘revising chamber’, scrutinising bills sent to it from the House of Commons, is an important one. However, unlike upper houses in many modern democracies such as the Senate in the USA, theoretically it cannot stop, and at best can only delay, legislation sent from the Commons. As a largely appointed chamber, doubts remain as to its legitimacy and as recently as 2012 the government tried to replace the Lords with a largely elected chamber. This initiative however failed, perhaps partly because MPs were worried that a wholly elected Lords might in the future question the primacy of the Commons. Lord of the Flies

...In his book “Lord of the Flies” William Golding expresses his opinion on human nature through the story of a group of schoolboys who get on a deserted island after an airplane crash. Through the thoughts and actions of different characters, their behavior in different circumstances William Golding shows us that the mankind is naturally evil, everyone is born with the evil inside and the society and the surroundings in which people live don’t play any role in making them bad and fulfilling evil intentions. At the same time the ability to control the bad side of his personality depends on the person himself and the moral norms that he can oppose to the evil. From the very beginning of the novel we observe the inequality which exists among the boys, the appearing of the leaders and those whose opinion is not taken into account. The big boys feel their power and start to use it against the younger ones. They pick on the small boys for no reason, run through their sandcastles destroying them. Sometimes they show real examples of cruelty without any reason (Roger throwing stones at Henry). Almost all the boys pick on Piggy, an overweight boy who wears spectacles and has asthma, never listen to his wise advice judging only by his appearances. At the same situation appears another boy called Simon who announces the main reason of everybody’s fears but is also mocked at and not paid the proper attention. Thus we can see that the boys of about 12-14 years already show the features and...

Lord of the Flies

...As we go through life, we all learn some important lessons. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph is the main character that learns an important lesson about human beings. Ralph and the boys get started on a deserted island as a result of a plane crash. There are no adults, no rules, and no laws. There is just the island, the boys, and their free will. Ralph is the boy who tries to establish authority to keep the boys safe and in line, but he learns that the chaos on the island can lead the boys to do very bad things. Ralph has great leadership qualities, and he shows them throughout the novel as he tries to lead the other boys so that they don’t go crazy. Ralph finds this conch shell with the help of Piggy, and he blows on it very loudly so that if there were any other survivors on the island other than Ralph and Piggy, they could find them. He blows on the conch shell, and tons of boys emerge from the woods and come together. Ralph didn’t just get leadership, he was voted by the boys to be leader. He won leadership over another boy named Jack. Jack is one of the main reasons that Ralph has to learn a hard lesson in this novel. Ralph has to be strong in his leadership, and he has to be a sharp, quick, logical thinker. Ralph conducts numerous meetings of the boys and is very clear and strong in his messages. The Lord of the Rings

...The Lord of the Rings: the longest fable ever told It is no secret that The Lord of the Rings has been one of the most beloved trilogies ever written. It has conjured up a fanatical group of followers over its history. The question is why is this book so beloved? Why when we pick up this book are we so enthralled with it? What about this book keeps us coming back for more? I believe for this book that it is because it has so many great messages hidden inside a package wrapped with adventure. A book becomes great when we can relate to its messages and characters very deeply. The never ending battle of good versus evil goes on to this day all around us. This book tells us everything that we should and should not do in our lives. It is like reading the entire collection of Aesop’s fables at one sitting. I don’t think that I have ever been so moved to laughter and tears by written words. The morals of this story are the reasons that I will list for its greatness. I will start with a fierce warning against the evils of greed. The dwarves of Moria were a great and powerful race. They lived in this particular mountain because they could find the mithril ore no where else in the world. It was very light but very hard, excellent for making weapons and armor. They became very greedy and delved deeper and deeper into the ground to keep there supply coming. They were warned that evil things lie deep in the ground, but they did not heed these warnings. It was there doom. Every...

The Lord of the Flies

...The Abominable Man William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies was published in 1952, seven years after the disastrous WWII. During the war, the veil of civilization was exposed very center revealing the true underlying evil of mankind, resulting in the death of millions including one victim; Anne Frank. Although she was hiding in a annex for two years because of the result of the brutality of people’s discrimination, she wrote; “It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” It is hard to think that such a young and innocent girl would perish soon after writing this in the concentration camps constructed by the Nazis. The Nazis’ brutal ‘purification’ of the world, leaving millions dead in the brutal concentration camps and the horrific gas chambers, exemplify Golding’s ideas of mankind; brutal, destructive and evil which are inherent in human nature. The use of Jack, the pig hunts, the Lord of the Flies, Simon and the island that Golding believes in the idea that evil in an inborn characteristic of the archaic human race. Golding's use of characterization of Jack portrays the capacity of evil and violence which men are capable of due to their inborn human nature of evil. This is indicated when Jack, feeling especially bloodthirsty after a pig hunt starts to chant: " Kill the pig, cut his throat! Kill the...

The Lord of the Flies

...The Flies that Plague Us All " Lord of the Flies" is the book that could strike a nerve of each and every individual whoever reads it. To me, it seems like to start an enthralling and fascinating journey when diving between the lines of this work. Bearing in mind that it was written during the time of WWII , I’m not surprised that this book discusses the essential evil of man. The story begins with a group of fifteen prep-school boys are stranded on a Utopia-like paradise island in the pacific after their plane crashes. With no adult supervision, they immediately try to set up a social system like any modern-world people would. Initially, they elect a chief and call group meetings to discuss important things to do such as building shelters and maintaining a signal fire. Through this system they select an attractive, intelligent boy named Ralph as leader. They also select a wild, power-urging boy named Jack and a mellow, calm, an most importantly peaceful boy named Simon as his assistant-leaders. However, as the boys indulge in the joy of their freedom and find that nothing there could hold them back or their misbehavior, they begin to fall from the floor of civilization and order to the abyss of chaos. Golding portrays this novel with an exploring eye for details and natural images. No one shall ignore the brilliant descriptions Golding made through out the whole book. “A great platform of pink granite thrust up uncompromisingly through forest and terrace and sand and lagoon...

Lord of the Rings

...The Lord of the Rings Some stories can affect people emotionally, but once in a while a story can call a person to escape to it. The Lord of the Rings is an enchanting story with masterful use of setting and sensational characters that engages readers and can move them to experience life in a deeper way. As a child, J.R.R. Tolkien lived in Africa until his father passed away. Then his mother moved them to England. Mrs. Tolkien made certain that her children learned literature and languages. It was probably due somewhat to his mother’s influence that Tolkien became who he was: an author and a linguist (Corday). Tolkien had a special interest in "obscure" languages, even to the point of creating his own. He called it High-Elven and often in his stories he used the language. Tolkien also invented an entire world called Middle Earth where The Lord of the Rings takes place. Because he had invented this world it had to bow to his will and rules. He was an accomplished linguist and this greatly helped his ability to vividly portray and create in the reader’s mind Middle Earth, a place that no person has ever been (Corday). Charters defines setting as "the place and time of the story." Also according to Charters, "When the writer locates the narrative in a physical setting, the reader is moved along step by step toward acceptance of the fiction" (Charters 1008). Tolkien’s setting gives the reader a sense of goodness or malevolence. Unlike an environment that is removed from...

Lord of the Flies

...The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel in which the theme of savagery versus civilisation is explored. Some British boys are stranded on an isolated island at the time of an imaginary nuclear war. On the island we see conflict between two main characters, Jack and Ralph, who respectively represent civilisation and savagery. This has an effect on the rest of the boys throughout the novel as they delve further and further into savagery. The theme of savagery versus civilisation is first introduced to us through the symbol of the conch shell which we associate with Ralph as he is the person who first uses it and becomes the elected leader of the boys. This symbolises authority amongst the boys. At the first assembly Ralph says “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak…he won’t be interrupted”. This suggests civilisation as Ralph is allowing each boy to have an equal say and opinion. If they have the conch, no matter who they are or what age they are they will be given the chance to speak and will be listened to by the rest of the boys. The boys have created the island to be a democratic place which shows a civilised side to them as they try to mimic the homes they have just left. Contrasting with the symbol of the conch is the symbol of the beast which comes to be associated with Jack as by the end of the novel he is almost devil worshipping it. The beast begins as a “snake thing” but by the end of the novel it has become “the...
