Loretta Claiborne

"Find an opportunity and seize it. Be the best you can be, and never let anyone doubt you”

“Loretta Claiborne has run 26 marathons, lobbied Congress, won the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, and is a fourth degree black belt in karate” (McCallum, 2008) and motivational speaker; while this may sound like any average athlete, Loretta is anything but average. Loretta Claiborne was born with a severe case of mental retardation or for better terms intellectual disability. Intellectual disability is “a condition that includes below-average general intellectual function and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living” (A.D.A.M., 2011). Loretta was born legally blind in one eye and did not speak or walk until she reached the age of four. Although I could not find much in writing on her background, I learned from the movie of her life entitled The Loretta Claiborne Story, that she was able to overcome here adversity with the love and support of family and through hard work and determination of not wanting to be “different”.
Loretta was a bit of a handle full in school she was often very angry. She would often get into fights with her fellow classmates who relentlessly taunted and teased her. One day her teachers let her out of class so that she would not meet up with her bullies and she told Loretta to “runaway and run fast” and Loretta did just that. As result Loretta realized her love for running. However, once in high school Loretta once again found herself being pushed around and once again Loretta’s angry side emerged. She beat one of her classmates and was expelled from school. Upon being expelled she was then placed at a workshop for the mentally challenged but was fired soon for fighting a fellow co-worker. As a result of this Loretta was placed with a social worker by the name of Janet McFarland who introduced her to the Special Olympics.
Loretta’s success and determination has been shaped and molded by many people and factors in her life. Much of this credit belongs to her family and community, Janet McFarland, Eunice Kennedy (founder of the Special Olympics), and her own goals of becoming a world class runner. The first person responsible for her shaping and molding was her mother Rita Claiborne. Rita was a no-nonsense mother and she did not treat Loretta any different the other children. She taught her the importance of not letting anyone make her feel as if she was different. She never let her feel sorry for herself. With added approval encouragement from those mentioned above, Loretta became fearless; embracing her disability and not letting it define who she is.
Having a good support team such as the one Loretta has been very influential in her developmental growth. If Loretta’s mother would have never realized the first time she heard her daughter that her daughter was capable of learning, she would have given her up as a ward of the state. Her teacher taught her that instead of fighting and getting into trouble that I tis okay to just “runaway”. Her community helped by giving her the confidence to go out with her head held high and Special Olympics gave her a platform to shine with the backing and support of founder Eunice Shriver.
An individual is considered to have mental retardation based on the following three criteria: intellectual functioning level (IQ) is below 70-75; significant limitations exist in two or more adaptive skill areas; and the condition is present from childhood (defined as age 18 or less) (AAMR, 1992). Loretta far exceeded the way people thought of her to be and who she did this is best explained by Alfred Adler’s theory that there is a motivating force behind all of our experiences and behavior that keeps us “striving for perfection”. In Loretta’s case, the motivating force behind her was the will to want to be looked at as equal, to be looked at as somebody important, and to belong to something special.
Another theory that could be applied to Loretta’s personality is that of Carl Rogers. Rogers’ entire theory is “built on a single ‘force of life’ he calls the actualizing tendency. It can be defined as the built-in motivation present in every life-form to develop its potentials to the fullest extent possible. We’re not just talking about survival: Rogers believes that all creatures strive to make the very best of their existence” (Boeree, 2006)
According to both Adler’s and Roger’s theories there is some type of force or drive responsible for Loretta’s ability to exceed beyond normal measure for an individual with intellectual disability. The difference in the two is that in Adler’s theory the force can come from external whereas Roger’s theory believes it comes from within. They are both however right when it comes to describing how Loretta was able to beat all obstacles put in her way.
Loretta Claiborne is an exceptional woman, athlete, and speaker; who had the will to “be somebody” and never give up on her hopes and dreams. Loretta’s story is one that makes you question whether we will be able to real understand the true meaning of “never judge a book by its cover” or I.Q. scores. If Loretta did not have a mother pushing her, family and the community backing her, her love for running, and eventually the Special Olympics, she may not have become the star she is today. Luckily times have changed and people like Loretta are no longer looked as the people know one wants to talk about.

...Andrea Bing Week 2 Homework – GM520 1. State the administrative agency which controls the regulation. Explain why this agency and your proposed regulation interests you (briefly). Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? If so, how? Department of Education – This proposed regulation interests me in particular because I personally know how hard it can be to pay back student loans after graduation. Students were once able to receive 2 Pell grants in the same year and now the Department of Education has changed to it to students can at maximum receive 1 Pell grant per award year. This results in students having to make up for that grant with more loans which ultimately means more debt. The changes were effective in the 2010-2011 award year and I was affected during my Bachelor Degree studies. 2. Describe the proposal/change.  The proposal limits students from receiving 2 Pell Grants within the same award year. “The Secretary amends four sections of the Federal Pell Grant Program regulations to make them consistent” with these changes. 3. Write the public comment which you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed regulation deadline has already passed, write the comment you would have submitted. Explain briefly what you wish to accomplish with your comment.  While it is necessary to have the documentation represent the correct facts of the Federal Pell Grant Program, in an economy where students and recent graduates...

Private Grant

...Private Grant Discounting tuition towards disaster. Study the effects of college tuition discounting. Findings indicated that: 1. At least 1/4 of the colleges and universities used discounting strategies that resulted in large losses of tuition revenue 2. Institutions with the greatest increases in discount rates raised their spending on institutional grants by $3,375 per undergraduate, but their tuition and fee revenue grew by just $3,069; 3. Discounting strategies do not appear to have significantly improved the academic profiles of admitted undergraduates when measured by changes in median admissions test scores of entering first-year students 4. Tuition discounting appear to have helped institutions increase their number of low-income undergraduates 5. Increased use of tuition discounting appear to have made it possible for more students from all income levels to enter higher education. Colleges and universities have several distinct goals for using tuition discounts: * to increase enrollments of low-income and other under-represented students; * to raise enrollments of students with high academic achievements or other talents; * To increase revenue from tuition and fees. However, the results show that at least one quarter of the four-year private colleges and universities used discounting strategies that resulted in large losses of tuition revenue. The institutions with the greatest increases in discount rates raised their spending...

The People vs. Martin Shkreli

...The People vs. Martin Shkreli The People vs. Martin Shkreli In August of 2015, Martin Shkreli, the CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, purchased the rights of a 62 year old drug , called Daraprim, that has been used for treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS, among other diseases. The Daraprim pill, which costs approximately $1.00 to make, was being sold for $13.50; however, soon after Shkreli purchased the rights to the drug, the pill went from $13.50 to $750.00 per pill, a 5,500% increase (Mclaughlin,2015). Martin Shkreli's explanations did not satisfy the public, hurting the credibility of not only himself but also of Turing Pharmaceuticals. People were outraged worldwide and the media had a feast , so much that it is safe to say that Shkreli was one of the most hated persons in 2015. Shkreli's explanations to the community and media for raising the price of Daraprim so high included, but were not limited to, the following statements: * We are not greedy, we are just trying to stay in business * The raise will go towards the improvement of Daraprim and the development of new drugs * The proceeds will go towards research and awareness (Mclaughlin, 2015). On an interesting note, John Carroll, the Fierce Biotech editor, was one of the firsts to be able to ask Shkreli about the raise on Daraprim. Shkreli's first answer was that it was a great business decision that also benefited all the stakeholders....

Active-wear product line for Vigor? Vigor is a division of the Harrington collection, a large manufacturer and retailer of high-end women’s apparel. Acquired in 1984 Harrington aimed to use the division to appeal to younger, fashion-conscious customers. The Vigor division predominantly sells career wear including skirts, pants, blouses, dresses and coats. Out of the 6 general categories of women’s apparel products it classifies its garments under “better”, described as having brand name labels, cheaper than the designer and bridge categories that include career wear, dresses and sportswear. Forty percent of active wear is expected to be captured by the “better” classification by 2009. Vigor’s target customers are said to be “trend setters”, the average women, 25-50 who are college educated, professional, have an income of over $75,000 and are seeking comfortable but stylish clothing for work. Vigor’s market share is 7%. Vigor’s target segment would fit well with the introduction of active-wear. Justice in Education

...Justice and Equality in our Educational Syste English 103 “My aim is to present a conception of justice which generates and carries to a higher level of abstraction the familiar theory of the social contract as found, say in Locke, Rousseau, and Kant”…John Rawls John Rawls theory simply states that a system that is “just” is one that is the most fair. Specifically, he believes that society should be built in a way that is fair for everybody and that those rights of any individual should not be sacrificed for the greater good of society. It is my observation that in today’s society injustice is wide spread and there is a moral collapse of our society due to the rich having the insatiable need for power and to control our society. Even when the creators of our society think they are being fair, the reality is that self preservation comes first, therefore rules and laws are mostly created to satisfy the wealthy, white, and normal upper middle class citizens . The race to achieve the American dream seems obtainable for only certain people and is more difficult to achieve when one is faced with certain obstacles or disabilities that others do not have. This need for control even effects our education which appears to cater to the young and affluent and those with a promising future and not to those of us who are in our mid life or older, disabled or recovering from a debilitating event in our life. Today’s system systematically disadvantages the poor, disabled...

First, the BPYC expects the NATO conference to severely limit the BPYC’s income stream, which is normally generated from the aforementioned services. Second, the BPYC expects the NATO conference to have an impact on the BPYC’s membership development, which typically occurs in mid April. In light of these impacts, the BPYC asked to meet with an agent of the Coast Guard to discuss the BPYC’s expected losses and to arrive at a reasonable compensation. On April 20, 2012, a member of the Coast Guard’s offices in Cleveland, OH, on behalf of the Captain of the Port, Sector Lake Michigan, telephoned the BPYC and confirmed the above understanding of the BPYC’s comment and its request. In light of the BPYC’s comment, the Coast Guard will not change the TFR published on April 13, 2012. Although the BPYC raised concerns about the economic impact of the Coast Guard’s security zones, the BPYC’s comment did not directly speak to the design, the establishment, or the enforcement of these security zones. The BPYC did not ask the Coast Guard to modify the security zones or to reconsider the manner in which they are enforced. Rather, the BPYC simply asked to meet with the Coast Guard to discuss compensation. While the Coast Guard takes seriously the economic impact that its rules might have on small entities, the Coast Guard is unable to provide compensation to small entities so impacted...

You may also interview a manager of the firm or contact “investor relations.” (“The mission of Ralph Lauren is to provide quality product, bringing different worlds together and inviting people into their dream and vision. They are the true innovators of lifestyle advertisements that tell a story and the first to create stores that encourage customer participation in that lifestyle.”) 2.
