In the article, Teens do their share of lying, the author Loretta Ragsdell argues that teenagers lie because they feel they need to do so to escape punishment. She supports her ideas through interviews with numerous teenagers who shared their experiences of lying with her. In the interviews, the teenagers explain how they lie about grades, absence, and other things in which the parents disapproved and would lead to a type of chastisement. By publishing this article, Ragsdell is trying to inform people of the lies that occurs among teenagers and prove that teenagers do not lie because it is an available option to them, they instead lie because they feel like they have to in order to avoid castigation.
