My name is Loues Brezway. I am a single mother of three children. We live in Molalla, Oregon. I have worked at the post office for some time and have enjoyed the security that this job gave me up till this point. I would like to offer some thoughts on saving our money, in hopes that something will be done to stop the U.S. Postal Service from being privatized.
The recent news about the U.S. Postal Service keeping all the post offices open, but with reduced hours, should save a little money on personnel, but darn little. There is still the rent, utilities and ongoing fixed expenses. Face it the postal office has been in trouble for a long time, but there are many things we can and should do to save it other than more intervention from the government.
First, the telephone cut down on the use of written correspondence, then came the fax machine and now email and social networking on the Internet. Somebody in government should have the gumption to do away with those post offices that don’t pay their way.
There has been a lot of talk about discontinuing Saturday delivery. I suggest a three-day week to start. Half the postal patrons could get delivery Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the other half Tuesday and Thursday, maybe Saturday. If the mail comes every other day, we can adapt. To soften the impact on postal employees, downsize the workforce mostly using attrition. As one retires, do not replace that worker.
Another thought I’ve heard is to raise prices, but, on non-letter size mail. That would likely result in more UPS and FedEx usage. Additionally, if they think they should raise the price of a stamp, don’t make the raise only 1 cent; make it a nickel so the raises are less frequent. USPS is supposed to be run like a business, so do it
