Sample Excerpt (Fantasy):
The night was chilly. I remained still, refusing to shiver. Any movement would be heard by the preternatural prey I stalked. Even my breathing was slow and regulated, so as not to mist in the unnaturally cold air—though my heart wanted to hammer its way out of my chest. My body wanted to fidget, every instinct telling me to move, to do something, preferably to run away, but I waited. Listening. Watching.
The chattering noise echoed through the trees, and I knew I had struck proverbial gold. Excitement threatened to force my breathing into irregular gasps, but I remained controlled. The wind carried their shrill voices—the strange, animalistic language resonating through the interwoven branches overhead—and I knew they were coming closer. I dared to turn my head, ever so slowly, to peer around the tree trunk that was my camouflage. Two pairs of glowing eyes, the only parts of the creatures visible in the limited light, were bouncing in my direction. I would have only seconds.
They drew closer, and I allowed my muscles to tense, prepared for the swift movements of my blade that would rend their malformed heads from their shoulders. They would pass within feet of me, and then they would be mine.
So I thought.
Without warning, a light flared just east of my position, causing spots to dance before my eyes and completely ruining my night vision. A string of choice invectives came to mind, but I suppressed my urge to curse and considered the possibility that I had gone unnoticed despite the unexpected flare.
Stupid girl, Saena. Stupid, stupid.
Still to the east, a loud male voice was snarling the choice words I had been contemplating mere seconds ago, and an accompanying crashing noise suggested he too was suffering from the same handicap to his night vision I now struggled to overcome. Even if I was stupid, it was a small comfort that I was not the only one.
The two creatures were screeching now, their chattering filling the woods with an ungodly cackle. It was when one pair of lamplight eyes materialized next to me that I realized my hope of going unnoticed was in vain.
I didn’t think. My arm moved of its own accord, slicing through bone and flesh as stick-like fingers reached for me, trying to latch on in the darkness. The chattering turned into a surprised howl and then a gurgle as my blade met its throat.
My hiding place obviously ruined, I bolted into the open, seeking out the dying Fae’s friend. The crashing to my east continued, then cut off abruptly with a startled yell and a triumphant cackle.
By the time I reached them, I was certain he was through. My night vision returning, all I could see was the man kneeling in middle of the woods, the short, twiggy creature latched around his neck with strong, wiry arms, its legs encircling his torso. That was usually the end of them, with these types of Fae. Hardly much of a challenge face-to-face, but once they got their arms around you, most of the time, you didn’t survive. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take its head off without risking most of the man’s neck being severed in the process as well.
The man reached up, trying to pry the creature off. I couldn’t see his face, but I knew he didn’t have long without air. It would be over soon, the poor bastard. The best I could do was avenge him. It served him right, though, trying to light fires in a place like this at night. Anyone who lived in these parts without learning that didn’t live long.
The creature was cackling gleefully, sensing its victory was at hand. But we were both surprised at what happened next.
Where the man’s hands landed on the creature’s arms, flame suddenly erupted.
I leapt back in shock—and to avoid the flailing creature, which released the man quickly with a startled shriek. It flapped its arms, trying to put out the flames, and the man stumbled to his feet, away from the creature, clutching his throat and gasping for breath.
Instinct kicked in again. I bolted forward; with one neat slice, the creature’s head was separated from its shoulders. It still looked surprised when its head hit the ground.
The man stumbled several more feet away, then collapsed against a tree trunk, shoulders heaving as he gasped for air. He turned a little to eye me warily through the dim light; I struggled to return his stare. My night vision had once again been compromised by his parlor tricks.
“Who…in the world…are you?” he finally asked after we wasted several precious seconds staring at each other.
“I could ask you the same question,” I snarled back, looking around and sheathing my blade. I walked over to him and reached up towards his face. He flinched back.
“Oh, relax. If I wanted to kill you, you’d be dead,” I muttered, taking his head in both hands and tilting it to the side. His throat had a dark line across it, already starting to bruise, but it didn’t look too bad.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he managed to mutter between his heavy breathing. His eyes darted nervously. He had that much sense, at least.
“Neither should you. Come on. I don’t think there are any more for a few miles, but the others may have heard the struggle.”
Without waiting for an answer, I seized the man’s arm and started hauling him back the way I had come. The caravan was camped there, in relative safety.
“Wait,” he mumbled, rather futilely. “The farm is the other way.”
“I don’t think you’ll be making it there tonight, my friend,” I informed him waspishly. Didn’t he understand I was rescuing him from his own blundering? “You can head back in the morning.”
He didn’t protest any further and fell into step beside me, allowing me to stop hauling him bodily along.
“I’m Aerim,” he finally offered, rather sheepishly.
“Saena,” I answered shortly. His name was fairly irrelevant to me; at the current rate, he would be food for the Dark Fae shortly. Though his parlor trick was rather interesting; perhaps I could get him to divulge it before he got himself killed.

...similar traits. These three texts are alike not just because they have the theme of sexuality but they all deal with the death of a lady and how the main characters of these texts are attracted to their death which is preceived as uncanny. In the book Dracula by Bram Stoker Dracula is a vampire who finds a victim named Lucy who he sucks her blood until she dies when Lucy is dead she is still seen as beautiful by the characters and are all still in love with her although she is dead. In the poem "Annabel Lee" the character's love Annabel has died but he is still attracted to her and talks about her as if she is still alive and lays with her every night. The next poem "The Sleeper" is similiar to "Annabel Lee" because the main character has lost the love of his life a beautiful woman. The character like in "Annabel Lee" struggles to deal with the nature of life and death. The writer Poe describes that his love is just sleeping and how beautiful she is when she sleeps. All of these texts talk about the death of a beautiful woman that the characters have all loved and are still attracted to and desire their loves even after their death. Romeo and Juliet

...What would you do for love? Would you sacrifice your life for the people you love? “Romeo and Juliet” is a thrilling play that demonstrates both love and hate. Love and hate both come at a cost, whether you lose something you love or something happens that you hate. As Mohandas Gandhi said “Hatred always kills, love never dies.” The play Romeo and Juliet demonstrates and expresses 3 main points relating to this quote. Those main points are love, hate, and marriage. Romeo and Juliet is portrayed as a “love” story but Shakespeare sets it up as a pain and death story. Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline at the beginning of the play. Juliet has never thought about getting married before her mother brings up the idea of marrying Paris. Shakespeare has to set their tale as ill-fated at the beginning (as “two star-crossed lovers” ) not only because their families hate each other, but because they do not know anything about what true love really is or even what life is like in the real adult world. When Romeo first lays his eyes upon Juliet, he is overwhelmed by how beautiful she is. He immediately forgets about Rosaline and wants to meet Juliet. Romeo saw Juliet at a ball he never intended on going to. For a few days he kept to himself and was thinking about how much he loves Rosaline. Eventually, Romeos cousin Benvolio convinces him to go. Romeo thinks that there is no point to go but Benvolio tells him “At this same ancient feast of the Capulet's sups the fair Rosaline...

...Shakespeare wrote three types of stories comedy, history, and tragedy. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy because of their love. Horse Dealer's Daughter

...1. The idea illustrated by the breakup of the Pervin household was an atmosphere filled with death and hopelessness. The Pervins are a family of horse dealers, who have recently lost their father. This circumstance has left them grieving and in debt. While this situation alone is depressing, Lawrence uses words such as “desolate” to describe the breakfast table, and “dreary” to describe the furniture to reinforce the hopelessness of the atmosphere. 2. Joe was having the hardest time dealing with the fact that they would have to leave their house and their lives behind. He was said to have thought of himself as one of the horses. Joe’s fate was to marry and survive from the employment provided by his father in law, who was a steward of a nearby estate. I believe that Joe was thankful that he had somewhere to go, but was regretful that he would have to sacrifice his independence and freedom, and have to become a “subject animal now.” He would be assuming the role of one of his work horses. 3. ...with a focal point focused on love and innocence in the context of death. At the establishing point of the story, the first story lines already shows a tint of innocence and simplicity but the gloomy tone of the story is already felt. The situation is just a very typical scenario in the Philippines but through the writer's prolific used of diction and imagery a common situation is turned into something new - a work of art. As you look at it, the plot is so simple. But what will move most of the readers is the author's command of language and smooth flow of situations. In economic terms, the reader can easily predict that the characters are somehow wealthy considering that the narrator, who happens to be the niece of the dead poet is boarding at the big girls' college in Manila, the presence of a conference room and the regular use of Spanish language. These are matters that only well-off families can afford and practiced. The story is so culture bounded and is so reflective of our society. Some reflective traits are the delicadeza system being practiced, the unfaithfulness of husbands, presence of gossipers, scandals in public and ridiculous funeral set-up with two different camps in opposite sides. A minimal Spanish colonialism practices is also being reflective in the story through the practiced of delicadeza system and the regular used of Spanish language. Along the way, the reader can feel that the narrator itself is being caught between love and disloyalty. [ chieftest mourner  ...

Is God Dead?

...1/22/2015 Is God Dead? In religious experience, people usually think that life is surrounded by ordinary and extraordinary things, especially in the stories of Moses and Elijah. As these stories in the bible go along, many times, some people are questioning the existence of God. To prove God’s existence, one should have a strong belief in their religion. As religion teaches, one believes that God dies physically for us on the cross because He sacrifices himself by giving His full love to us. After God arises from the dead three days later, His soul remains alive. That soul exists in order for us to have a better and deeper relationship with God. One believes that God does exist in nature, in the human person, in the church, and everywhere else. What about a person who does not believe in those things? What about a person who has no religious background and believes that God is dead? Each person has a different perspective, understanding, and belief about the existence of God. Whether one realizes or not, this is his or her choice to believe God’s existence. One will use their experiences to believe in God’s presence in their own lives. They can interpret their experiences as happy or sad, depending on who they trust. If this is in a happy way, one will believe God’s existence by saying God is dead physically, but His soul is not dead. He remains within us everywhere and all the time in this world. He helps us when we need it during the hard times, and we love Him in return. If...

The 60's

...rock group or singer's music reflected and/or influenced the 1960s.” Living Dead: The Cultural Impact of the Grateful Dead The decade of the 1960’s saw plenty of musicians become involved in the protest movement. Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, among others, wrote of the injustices of American society. While the Beatles were singing “All You Need Is Love”, the Rolling Stones wrote about the “Street Fighting Man”. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young sang about the Kent State shootings in “Ohio”. Country Joe McDonald encouraged the burning of draft cards while leading the “Fish Cheer”. However, the degree of influence each had on not just the 1960’s, but ensuing decades waned as burnout, family life, and lifestyle choices took their toll. The act whose music reflected and influenced not just the 60’s, but decades to come, was the Grateful Dead. The music of the Dead reflected the counterculture of the 1960’s, fostered a self-sustaining, traveling multicultural community, and delivered a message of peace and love for thirty years. San Francisco was the center of the counterculture movement of the 1960’s. The Haight-Ashbury neighborhood attracted thousands of youths from across the country, looking to drop out of traditional society and build a new society. In the middle of this scene, living at 710 Ashbury, were the members of the Grateful Dead.
