Part 1: * Right to practice their religion (s. 2) * Section 43: * Does not infringe a child’s right to security or a child’s right to equality * Infringement is justified under s. 1 as reasonable in a free democratic society * S. 43 is unconstitutionally vague * Parents who were spanked say that hitting children is for their own good and a form of discipline that is reasonable * Chastity’s parents was raised in a very religious community and disciplining children with physical infliction or their belief in punishing children when they are wrong is normal for them * Remedy: When parents religion rights are violated , they can ask for a remedy (s. 24 (1)) * Her parents follow strictly their religious belief which states that disciplining your children is okay when they are wrong so that a “child does not stray from the paths of righteousness” * Common sense: parents inherited the practice from their own parents who also learn it from their parents * They were worried sick of their child and they do not want her to stray and violate their religion!

Part 2:

* S. 43 is unconstitutionally vague & that it is not clear what is “reasonable under the circumstances” * S. 7: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” * She may have not known what she was doing and like any other teenager she was just experimenting with what her friends were doing. * S. 12: “Everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment” * When they fracture and broke their child’s hand * The punishment was exaggerated * U.S. has 80% of parents practice spanking * U.S. has the most underage assault cases involving exaggerated children punishment

Love Is Hard to Find in La

...Love is Hard to Find in L.A. After reading Love in LA and A Food Man is Hard to Find, it becomes clear at first that the stories are very different, though, with a deeper look you can start to see a few subtle similarities. Love in LA tells the story of a young man named Jake, who ironically only seems to love himself. Jake has a very brief encounter with a woman named Marina after the two have a fender-bender while navigating through LA traffic. A Good Man is Hard to Find tells the story of a family that is going on vacation which goes horribly awry after what seems to be a major accident, and the ironic run-in with the worst man possible known as “The Misfit”. Characters and Their Morals In “Love in LA”, every step of the way it seems that Jake’s decisions were all selfish and inconsiderate. From giving fake information after the accident to claiming to have “been in a few movies” in hopes of getting a phone number, it is apparent that Jake’s outlook on life is heavily revolved around his own well-being without the consideration of others. We are given very little information about Marina’s point of view on things. She is portrayed as innocent and even considerate when she talks about her dad being disappointed if she didn’t report the accident. Her final words make her seem almost gullible for falling for Jake’s charm when she says “call me” before departing. In “A good Man is Hard to Find” the main character is the grandmother of the family. In the first page of the story...

Love in L.A. vs. a Good Man Is Hard to Find

...“Love in L.A” and “A Good Man is Hard to find” are two short stories that forecast the doom of its characters to readers. Love in L.A tells the story of Jake, a young, unemployed, con artist who is in love with himself. A Good Man is hard to find, is the story of a grandmother and her family on the road headed to Florida for a vacation. Both stories have to do with morals and good vs. evil. The common links between the two stories is both of them take place in traveling vehicles. They both touched on ideas of morals. Both stories are different because the main characters had different beliefs. Jake always had ill intentions. He gave false information to Mariana concerning the accident he had with her. Most of his thoughts were about his automobile and women. Jake was pretty much a con artist. Mariana is hardworking, honest and responsible. Mariana was suspicious of Jake’s behavior during the conversation regarding the accident; however, Jake still managed to give her false information. Jake intended on leaving the scene of the accident, but when he saw Mariana and how beautiful she was, his intentions changed. He wanted to know her on a more personal level. Mariana had honest intentions, and had no idea Jake was giving her false information. The grandmother was a judgmental liar. She wanted to go on vacation, but not to Florida because of the Misfits. Bailey, the father, thought he had control of his family, but they actually ran over him. He planned on having the vacation...

Compare/Contrast (Love in L.A. & a Good Man Is Hard to Find)

...01/11/2015 Setting The setting of Love in L.A. is beneath the overpass of the Hollywood freeway on Alvarado Street and that is where the whole story line takes place. The setting of A Good Man Is Hard to Find takes place primarily in Toombsboro, Georgia on the way to Florida, but also takes place on the road, and also at Red Sammy Butts BBQ. The differences between the two stories would be that Love in L.A. take place in one place and A Good Man Is Hard to Find takes place in three different places. The only setting similarity I can find between the two stories is that both story lines take place on the road and near the road throughout the stories. Characters The main character of Love in L.A. is Jake. In this story, it is hard to tell if Jake is a good man or a good con-man. It is stated throughout the story that he has no insurance and illegal license plate, but is definitely charismatic, flirtatious, and not happy with his current lifestyle. In my opinion Jake is both the protagonist and the antagonist, but since I must only choose one he is the considered the protagonist. Mariana seems to be just as flirtatious but in a more mild manner and seems to be intrigued by Jake’s personality. Mariana seems to me to be a shy and genuine person that gives the benefit of a doubt, where Jake is trying to get out of a situation that would harm him and seems amazed by the type of person Mariana is. The characters in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” are very different in my...

Lust Is Easy, Love Is Hard, Like Is Most Important.

...And the whisper in the air says….. How real is the reality of the mere existence of love and its essence? The perspectives it follows differing from an age to another is funny when understood in the literal sense. Is the essence of love a mere butterfly in a teenage girl’s tummy or the heavy heartedness of the bride when he promises to keep her happy for the clichéd rest of their lives? A million different definitions still fails to facilitate a clear understanding of how it is to be in love? What are the promises made when in an illusion of being together, how are they made, why are they made? Why make a promise when you don’t know what it means or know how to keep one. It’s not a result of others I have seen or felt in my life till now, but it’s from who I am as a being and done things myself. It’s an experience I felt within myself, absolutely nobody to blame. I gave promises with a hope to keep them and never to damage them..But then eventually they were damaged and without the slightest of my conscious I, not just hurt the people I loved from my heart but hurt myself in the end. How did it happen when all I thought was everything is going the way it has to? Do things really go the way it has to..Is there really a way that has been said by the gods or the philosophers or whoever..?A way how things must and should go or is it just simple karma? If it is karma then why is there the existence of regret? When we were born, just entering into this wild world with the most innocent...

True Love

...of True Love It’s not easy to find real love let alone love that lasts a lifetime, but in the story “Love Medicine” you get insight to a couple based on the observation of their grandson. Through the narrator, Lipsha Morrissey, we are able to learn about Grandma and Grandpa Kaspaw and how deep their connection is. Grandma Kaspaw demonstrates her first act of love by saving her grandson “she saved me from my own mother, who wanted to tie me in a potato sack and throw me in a slough.” (Erdrich 275) Grandma Kaspaw loved her family and did whatever it took to make sure they were taken care of. In the story Grandpa Kaspaw suffers from Alzheimer’s disease “So I didn’t really listen to hard when the doctor said this was some kind of disease old people got...” (Erdrich 276). This disease really begins to test the love that Grandpa and Grandma have for each other. It is very hard for Grandma to watch him go through this “second childhood” (Erdrich 275) as Grandpa calls it. During this time his behavior is erratic and he does things that are very out of character. The catalyst in this story is Lulu Lamartine, who is a female on the reservation that has had a crush on Grandpa her whole life. She takes advantage of Grandpas disease and allows there to be relations with herself and Grandpa. “but even Grandma had trouble keeping her patience once he started sneaking off to Lamartien’s place…. That’s one of the reasons why he goes.”(Erdrich 276) This is very hard for Grandma...

Literature a Reflection of Life

...Phase 1 Individual Project LITR201-1302A-01 15 April 2013 ABSTRACT The two stories that are examined by this document are “Love in L.A.” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. Dagoberto Gilb wrote “Love in L.A.” in 1993 is a story of a young man that will say or do anything to get away with his actions without facing consequences. The other story that we will discuss is, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor in 1953. This story is a very interesting read, as a woman struggles to not be selfish in the time of peril. We will discuss these two stories, comparing their differences while looking at their small similarities. The settings for both stories, A Good Man is Hard to Find and Love in L.A., are different, but have some similarities. The Love in L.A. takes place in Los Angeles while the A Good Man is Hard is located in the Atlanta Georgia area, heading toward Florida. Both stories have a setting of warm and sunny weather; it is believed that both stories take place in the summer time. Another similarity of both stories is the fact that they are in cars, on the open road. Neither story takes place in another setting, just in vehicles on the road. Both writers of each story tell their tale in the location that they both lived. The settings of both stories are depicted from the author’s own home area as Dagoberto Gilb lived in L.A. and Flannery O’Connor lived in Georgia. That is an important detail as they are able to quick, and accurately, depict...

Compare and Contrast

...Every author writes in different contexts. Between settings, tone, irony, themes and moral codes, there is always a vast array of each between authors. “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberto Gilb and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor are very similar in many ways but they do vary considerably. “Love in L.A” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” are two examples of the similarities and differences between the two styles. The setting of “Love in L.A” is on a highway to Los Angeles. The main character, Jake is a self absorbed, irresponsible protagonist driving along the highway. As with most drivers, you tend to be envious and dream about the more fancy or better vehicles on the road, as Jake did with the vehicle in front of him. The driver of the other car is an innocent young girl, Mariana. (Daroberto, 1993). There is a complete 180 with “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is set in a very rural community. Even though the precise location is not given, the story gives clues that it is located in mid-sized towns. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” takes place in numerous states as a family is taking a vocational trip. (Boston, 2012). Jake, is the main character in the short story “Love in L.A.”. He portrays love from the protagonist perspective. His expressions of love are in different fashion but none of which results in anything positive. In the story, Jake, is portrayed as being lazy, poor, irresponsible and a scam artist who is ultimately looking to free his soul. Throughout the story...

Attraction

...Attraction: Power of Love and Relationships Every so often the question arises, what is love? In antithesis to shared beliefs about attraction by many human beings it is not something that is mystical nor is it something that can hardly be assumed but there are lots of rules that oversee the manner. Love is a word that carries many meanings. Even though there are people who become attracted to others in the same way, still it occurs for various reasons with each individual. The paper that I am writing is about love and relationship. This paper will be addressing the factors of attraction, the human need to build bonds and relationships, and the three types of love which are, companionate, passionate, and compassionate. In the world that we live in and the many differences that we have with one another like race, backgrounds, and cultures love is the one constant that we all share in common. Love is what connects us to others all around the world. When you allow yourself to become connected with another human being you automatically set yourself up to be exposed to love. As the emotional human being that we are we learn to what love is and how to express it from the time that we are children during our childhood until we become adults and we begin to express love in our adulthood. On our journey from childhood to adulthood we learn that every relationship that we encounter is different from the one to the other. These relationships depend on the factors that are...

Friends

...Essay on Love and Friendship: What is True Love? Love, friendship, sympathy and likeness – these feelings are the brightest moments of our life. They become the source of joy and positive energy but can become the reason of big problems and disillusionment at the same time. It’s important to know the notions of these feelings and their characteristics to avoid possible mistakes. Very often lack of knowledge in this field can lead to misunderstandings and finally to poor or even tragic consequences. Sometimes people mix love and friendship or love and passion or sexual attraction. All these feelings are important and reflect different aspect of our life but not all of them are enough to create a family. For non-professional it’s hard to give appraisal of such notions as love and friendship. Professionals also don’t share common opinion on this subject. Bruce King in his book Human Sexuality Today compares love and friendship finding differences and similarities. Both feelings – love and friendship closely correlate and interact, as they possess a lot of common characteristics. First of all love and friendship is relationship, which requires time, effort and many other characteristics, which form mutual relationship. Both, love and friendship assume emotional involvement, care, respect and devotion. Both feelings undergo transformations with the flow of time and go through different stages. You can have several friends but situations of being in loving relationships with several...
