Music to most people is calming and others see it as a way to escape from reality. Personally, it is both. For every moment in life there is a song that fits perfectly for the current mood, there is a song that can also lift you out of that mood. Music has been one of my best friends. It always knows what to say and how I feel no matter if it is a song because I am hurting or a song that makes me dance. For every action or feeling, there is a lyric that sings and speaks exactly what you feel. I am the youngest of seven children. My mother birthed four but my father had a total of seven. I was always the cute kid that everyone loved. I was bright skinned with curly brown hair and hazel eyes. I was athletic yet hard working. Me and my siblings never really got along. I was always the “odd man out” so to speak. I never related to anyone in my family but I was happy being me. The choices I make today are still the same. I still could care less what someone else thinks of me. If I feel like dancing, I will dance. If I feel like singing, I will sing. I learned at a very young age to make myself happy. There is a song by Corinne Bailey Rae called Put Your Records On. It is about being yourself, letting your hair down and following your dreams. Being careless and free, living life and learning from your past experiences. In life things may get hard but you still have to push on even when you feel as though everyone is against you, be yourself. As a kid it was easy to live and do what you wanted because we were kids having fun and being happy. When we get older, that is a true test of emotion. When I hit my pre-teen and teenage years is when things took a turn for the worst. I had got my first job at the age of 12 cleaning night clubs and being paid under the table. My mother knew about my job but my siblings did not. My sister and I would fight like cats and dogs because she felt like my mother was giving me everything. The truth was, my sister was a trouble maker. My mother never really had time for me, I was always on my own to get things done and get to where I needed to be. Sometimes I felt as though I was hopeless and had nothing else to do but I had grown tired of arguing. We would fist fight and she would put me down telling me that I was hopeless. All through my teenage years I maintained a job and stayed in school. I was an athlete and very popular in school. I always wanted a close relationship with my sister and just to hear her say these things to me, she really didn’t know me but it made me feel hopeless. There is a song by Dionne Farris called Hopeless. I would most definitely make this the soundtrack to my adolescence. I was never the kid that had to neither try and fit in nor be a rebel, I relied on no one for anything and I was very independent. As time went on, I began to look up to her not as a role model but as someone I did not want to be. I did not become her. I am the only one of my mother’s children to graduate high school and continue to college. I am also the only one to serve this country and a United States Army soldier. Even though my adolescence was not the best, it was not all bad. In the times where I needed to be uplifted, I would listen to some gospel or a dancing song. I am not the most Christian person in the world but I try. There is a song in particular that every time I began to feel alone I would play. Smokie Norful is a gospel artist who sings a song titled I Understand. This song really just brings out the religious comfort. It assured me that I was not alone and that someone else understood that I felt hopeless and alone. I let me know that God had something greater for my life and that he was making me stronger for the rough road ahead and the hardships in life. Mary J. Blige, and r&b singer has a song called Work In Progress. This song explains that no one is perfect. Everyone may make mistakes but at the end of the day, no one is better than the next person and that everyone is a exactly a work in progress. I also listen to a lot of jazz music to keep my mind at ease or relax when I do not want to hear words and want to sort things out in my head. I love this artist by the name of Boney James and a record label named Hidden Beach Recordings. Happiness for me can come from any form of music; even sad songs. The sad songs help me realize where I have come from and where I want to go. Within the last few years, I have begun to listen to Reggae. I love to listen to this record called Champion by Buju Banton. This song just tells the story of a champion and how they have overcome all of the obstacles that have been in the way and still manage to remain victorious. Music is something that is great for the soul. Whatever genre of choice there is a song out there that can make anyone feel better or can began the soundtrack to a person’s life. Music can express what one may not be able to or may not find the words to. Anything from love to disappointment, there is a song out there. Music is a like a drug, some days I need music to get me through while other days I am perfectly fine. I take my music everywhere with me and so do my children. I love music; it’s my drug.

Love Music

...Music is an important part of life. It is a form of expression. It has no boundaries, and it follows no guidelines. Essentially, to me, music is like air. It has no true shape or definition, yet we need it to live. Imagine a world without music. All you’re left with is dust. Music is life itself. As a junior in high school, I’ve given considerable thought to my future. When I was younger, I saw myself as an architect or perhaps just simply an artist. When I grew to be a bit older, I saw myself in robotic science. Then, I was accepted into Milwaukee High School of the Arts. It was perhaps one of the best things to ever happen to me. When I first started, I had very little music instruction. Under the direction of Mrs.Garcia, I quickly was able to expand my knowledge. Less than a few months at the school, I realized that music is my calling. With college approaching at an ever increasing rate, I’ve begun to plan my life in incredible detail. The one thing that remains constant in my planning would have to be music. Music is my life. This summer, I shall begin touring colleges. My first choice would have to be UW-Milwaukee. Both my band director and private lessons teacher went there. They’re both fantastic and I look up to them. Musical education would be an amazing thing to do. I want the opportunity to watch as a child grows under my instruction. I want to be able to have someone look up to me as much as I look up to my lessons teacher. I want to inspire a child to take...

Love in Music of Then and Now

...Love in Music of Then and Now During the 11th and 13th centuries during a period known as the Middle Ages a new breed of poets emerged in the south of France. Known as the Troubadours, these poets roamed the land turning their poetry into art by adding an accompaniment of musical instruments. These lyricists wrote their music in the vernacular of Southern France, French, but also included hints of Spanish and Italian from the nearby countries. These storytellers captivated the audiences with their many poems of love and romance. Even though the Middle Ages may have ended eight centuries ago, the content and romance found within the songs still flourishes today in modern songs. The themes and feelings of love have not changed with the advancement in musical technology, this is apparent in the song by Billy Currington Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right. Within this song there are many similarities along with a few differences in his experience with love with that of the Troubadour artist Bernard de Ventadour and his composition of When the Fresh Grass. In the song Must Be Doin' Somthin' Right by Billy Currington he is telling about the feelings and images of love and the woman. He talks about how women are complex and don’t actually know what they want with a man, but, once you find out what they want there are many ways to tell that they are starting to fall in love. It is the man's responsibility to touch upon these hints of love and start working with them in order to...

Personal Narrative: My Love For Music Education

...My love for music has been apparent for as long as I can remember. Whether it be jamming to “High School Musical” on repeat, or begging my mom to turn on the radio so I could sing along, there never was a moment I thought I could exist without music as a companion by my side. That’s why as a high school student it was crucial that I have a teacher who will not only further my understanding of music, but support me in my musical endeavors. I have been so fortunate to have Mrs. Sandy Elliott as my Vocal Music teacher at Mt. Juliet High School for the past 3 years. Mrs. Elliott has inspired me to not only seriously consider music as part of my major or minor in college, but she has founded a love and appreciation for those around me who share...

Music for My Soul

...Music For My Soul Kaplan University 300-02 – Art and Humanities: Twentieth Century and Beyond Music For My Soul Being from a family of many musicians and singers, music is a huge part of my life. It’s much more than a melody in my ear. It’s the movement of my body, ease of my mind, and thoughts I can only express through sweet, therapeutic sounds. Music is that “feeling” I get when I hear it. Through my childhood to adulthood, it still lives in me. Various genres of music have played important roles in my life. Rhythm & Blues (R&B), Rap/Hip Hop, Neo Soul, and Gospel have all conveyed emotions within me. Journey with me as I take a look back over my life and reminisce on how important music has been for my soul. As a child, I remember sitting in my room with my radio blasted! I would sing and dance until I became completely exhausted. I was very familiar with Rap/Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel music. These three genres of music captivated me in three different ways. The rhythm of Rap music made me dance until I would sweat. Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer was my all time favorite. M.C. Hammer started the song with “my, my, my, my music hits me so hard, makes me wanna say “Oh my Lord, thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet” (Hammer, 1990, track 2). Those were the only words to the verse I knew for a long time. I must admit that words to Rap songs didn’t mean very much to me back then. I loved to dance so the beat was all...

My Favourite Thing

...I would like to write about. That is music. Music can be used to express yourself. In religion are they also using songs to pray. I am not the greatest singer actually I can not sing. I love to listen to music. I love to listen to almost every genre of music but I do not like to listen to classic music because that makes me fall asleep. The reason I love to listen to music is because music can describe what you feel. Just for example if you just broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend then there are many songs that can describe what you feel and sometimes it just touches your heart. Music can also be a lifesaver in an awkward situation. It can example be if you are driving a car and there is a awkward silence between you and your partner then music can save the awkward silence. Songs can describe what you feel. When you are sad and tired then you can listen to music so it can brighten up your day. You can deliver a message with a song. A song can be as beautiful as a poem. It can tell you a life story just in 3-4 minutes. For every song there is a certain place where you were when you listened to the song and it can bring memories back. Not all of the songs are great today. Some of the songs are so catchy but the lyrics do not make any sense just like ‘’Gangnam Style’’. Not many people know what he sings but they still sing along. Music is universal and that is also one of the reasons why I love music. Some of the reasons why I love music so much are because it can make you...

Analysis of Music

...Analysis of Music Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation One of the advantages of breaking rules and exploring beyond is that one comes out with something that has never been experienced before. For this reason, Beethoven and The Beatles established themselves in the music industry because they created a norm that every new artiste followed. Composers that followed them always tried to be like them. On the other hand, there is a cost in breaking the existing musical rules. People always want to hear what they love from their past musical experiences. Introducing a new genre may not auger well with the popular style. Despite being radical composer, Beethoven actually composed what people liked. R. Murray Schafer has been successful in breaking the musical composition rules. One of his radical music was East, composed in the year 1972. It was totally different from the traditional techniques at that time. It had slow glissandos and the performers sung and hummed on top of playing the instruments. Generally, Murray employed his compositional creativity to challenge his listeners as well as the performers of his music. The spice girls joined the Pop music in the 90s and became successful. Their strength was largely due to the perfect combination of each individual talent and voice in addition to their youthful vigor. Michael Jackson broke the rules of the existing Pop music and introduced a style that was outstanding for four decades. Michael introduced sophisticated...

...of true minds” is a about Shakespeare expressing his love while he was married and telling how nothing could come in between their love. That is was unbreakable and unshakable. “Loves not Times fool, though rosy lips and cheeks.” That maybe why Victoria opened the poem with “I am a dainty black rose”. In Victorias poem she talks of her love and how it is like ointment. And when you think of ointment it is something that soothes a scar or sore. Her love is unbreakable with this person and nothing else makes her feel happier or complete than when she is with him. Her love is felt like nothing else when she is one with this person. Her person knows her inside and out and understands her no one else ever has. Lines thirteen and fourteen says “Dim night club, No audience to hear” she was talking about how the way she sings and there is nobody around her to hear. However, she still feels a connection because she is by herself and does not need an audience to show her love for music. The poem that Victoria wrote I can see how she relates it to William Shakespeare even though she is talking about music there is no other person that can fill that void in her life but music. Singing and song writing is her passion and nothing will ever break that. Music is nothing like a human love it will love you when your happy, sad, angry, or make mistakes. Her love for music is like her first love no matter her mood or attitude towards it, music is her escape route for expressing the way she feels...
