...Brian Tate To Love is to Always Learn For decades, I thought I was going to school to learn how to teach; in reality, I have been going to school to learn how to learn. I’ve learned that it is futile to learn to teach unless I have a strong love for learning myself and have an effective means of sharing that love with students. This love of learning, I believe, is what makes a teacher and drives them to continually seek better, more effective methods of teaching. For millennia, teachers have been developing effective learning methods pioneered by philosophers such as Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato. Unfortunately, these men never achieved unanimity. Instead, they laid the foundation for a philosophy of education debate that continues today. Part of the problem with trying to reach a conclusion for how to effectively teach lies within the diversity of learning styles in students. In addition, not all teachers have the same gifts for teaching. This is why I believe that it is important for every teacher to discover an education philosophy that works with his or her unique teaching style. This philosophy will guide them throughout their teaching career and will define them when they step into their teaching role. Through experimenting with many different teaching methods, I’ve created my own philosophy that encompasses elements of progressivism and constructivism. The first theory of education, progressivism, has played a key role in my education growing up and has been one...

...been in a situation where you learned some new things about yourself? Were they good or bad? How did these new findings affect your life? In “The Magic Barrel”, Leo Finkle, a rabbinical student searches for a matchmaker named Salzman. Leo denies many women by learning about them through Salzman and even goes on a date with one and still doesn’t find any of the women interesting. Salzman gives Leo a stack of pictures to look through to see if he has any interest in them based off of their looks. One of the women in the pictures catches his eye and he falls in love with her. We learn that this picture was not meant to be in the stack and Salzman admits the young woman is his daughter, Stella. The awakening of passion and love, the definition of identity and the search for love are all involved in Leo’s experience with Salzman. The author demonstrates that people tend to learn a lot about themselves, for instance the ability to love, through life’s trials and tribulations such as dating. Leo approaches his desired feelings of passion and desire with resistance and confusion. At the beginning of the story, Leo contemplates getting a matchmaker unsure how it will turn out. Leo Finkle…had been advised by an acquaintance that he might find it easier to win himself a congregation if he were married. Since he had no present prospects of marriage, after two tormented days of turning it over in his mind, he called in Pinye Salzman (627). Leo was hesitant to start dating because he didn’t...

...subordinate to us humans! Many people think that they can abuse and hit a dog to submission! I however have learned that an animal learns what we teach them. For example, if an animal is abused, they learn to fear us! Not respect and love us! Dogs only react to our teachings. They do not understand what is right from wrong, or when to, or not to. The best training, takes place when they are still a puppy, the sooner and younger the better. It’s like training and raising a child. That is when they are ready to learn. Proper training, starts from day one. Put up a barricade; do not allow them to roam the entire house on the first day. That way you can see when they make a mistake, like urinating, or doing poop! That gives you the opportunity to watch them, and teach them how to become house trained, and let them out before they do it inside. When training, speak softly, when they do something wrong, change your tone of voice! That way, they will learn to listen and understand! When they do something that is not acceptable, just raise your tone of voice! Then they learn to become sensitive to what you are trying to teach them, by voice alone. Love them, hug them, reward them, when they do something correct! If all they know and learn is to get hit, when trying to correct them, they are waiting to get corrected by getting hit! They will not learn how to listen! That will only make them fear you, not to respect or understand you! I...

...Love The concept for love, this is one that for centuries has been tried and errored, as well as found and lost. Either way though, love, has ended in success, or failure. Whatever the reasons may be, it would seem as if love is not dictated by the world but by the individual, or individuals who are proclaiming love to the world. Most of these individuals who profess and or proclaim love would tell you their story of how they found love with each other or for themselves. Some of these stories would be glorious, and some would be told as if they live a tragic life. All in all, though the concept of love is so vague and yet so vast, my concept of love is one of few or many one would say. So think what you will as this is my concept of love. My concept of love can be found across the ages of time, in books, poems, movies, and all forms of the ancient arts both physical evidence and written or drawn evidence can be found. “…4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 New International Version (NIV). The Bible. This is such a powerful passage of wisdom when it comes to love. Why this is so powerful is because, love takes time, and time is love. We must have patients with things...

...The Grade Verses Gaining Knowledge Marjorie Godek Brigham Young University-Idaho Sister Hopkins, March 6, 2015 Introduction You are defined by a number, A single number, a single letter. And if your number is not a 4.0, you’re no good. If your letter is not an A, we don’t want you. This is the message that is being sent to students across America. Young human beings are reduced down to a number, slapped on a piece of paper, or mechanically entered into some cyber sphere. This is the value of today’s students in America; the numbers that represent them. However, there are key principles taught by David McCullough in his address “Love of Learning,” and Thomas G. Plummer’s “Diagnosing and Treating the Ophelia Syndrome” that have given new insight into addressing the errors in our educational system that so many today are lamenting, yet are misdiagnosing, and treating with snake oil. These two men have been on both the learner and the teacher side of life, and I believe have correctly identified critical elements to true learning. And as they possess such experience, it begs the question: how does our country’s current approach to education align with these men’s ideas about learning? Let’s be so bold as to propose that it does not. These men provide the two key pieces to education that our country is currently lacking, and while both use rational thinking to arrive at their conclusions, Plummer argues that individuals stunt their learning and growth when they depend on others...

...become extremely dependent on teachers for the acquisition of information, but it creates absolutely zero desire for students to learn. McCullough talks of the importance of learning to love learning, not learning to cram every bit of our brain full of information. One of the most important things that can be learned in college is how to learn and how to love learning. If we do not gain that appreciation for learning while we are in school, then it is much harder to continue learning after we are done and graduated. David McCullough proposes that learning and being educated is not just memorizing and knowing the facts and information that is given to us, but comes through concentrated work and a desire to learn from great books and great teachers (McCullough 334). SUMMARY In, “Diagnosing and Treating the Ophelia Syndrome,” Thomas G. Plummer, mourns the widespread lack of individual’s ability to think for their own self, labeling the condition “Ophelia Syndrome.” The symptoms of this mental malady, he argues, include a dependency on others to tell you what and how to think. He suggests that in today’s universities there comes a point in every field where a teacher can no longer tell a student what to think. And if students have never been taught to think for themselves, it will severely limit their ability to learn and grow. The students must learn to shoulder the role of thinking through the next steps on their own. He concludes by encouraging self-motivated action, and stepping...

...few of the negative effects could also last long. Parents shouldn’t pay students for good grades because students will not improve, lose the love to learn and make children have a desire to be paid for everything. To begin with, students should not be paid for good grades because it won’t cause them to improve. From the source Paying for Good Grades is a Bad Idea, quotes, “Their research shows that simply children don’t improve because they are paid money. In fact, the opposite happens.” This means how paying students won’t enforce them into learning. The money is what they care about, not what they learn. This causes them behind once the reward is not there. Therefore, it causes them to lower their grades. The effect of this is having students unable to process the information or making them behind. In any case, children will not improve because they were paid....
