Oral communication components include brief summaries of exercises, a mock interview, a team presentation, and meeting management skills. Also, the class will cover cross-cultural communication, personal interaction skills, and business etiquette with a focus on electronic communication.

Written documents and oral presentations must include correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

PREREQUISITES:
1. You must have successfully completed (grade C or better) CSCI/CISM 1130, Computer and Its Applications.
2. You must have successfully completed (grade C or better) ENGL 1102, English Composition II.

Remember: You are responsible for insuring that you have met the prerequisite requirements. If you are on the official roll of this course, you are certifying that you have satisfactorily completed these prerequisites prior to enrolling in BUSA 2105. If, at any time, we discover that this certification is invalid, you will be withdrawn from the course; if this happens after the withdrawal deadline, you will receive a WF, even if the discovery is made at the end of the semester and after a final grade has been given.

REQUIRED TEXT: • Thill, John and Bovee, Courtland. Excellence in Business Communication, 10th or 11th edition. 2013 or 2014. New York: Pearson. • You will need an SSU email address and access to D2L (set up through PAWS).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
You will

• Prepare and deliver effective oral presentations, including appropriate verbal and non-verbal behaviors and audio-visual aids; • Plan, write, and edit letters, reports, emails and other technically correct business documents. • Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively in a team to complete a team project and deliver an effective group presentation; • Develop a resume that represents effectively your current status. • Demonstrate your understanding of basic interviewing skills during a mock interview.

In addition, I expect all students to participate willingly in class exercises and discussions.

Success in accomplishing these outcomes requires a C or better.

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION: • I will use several methods to deliver instruction, including o Lecture and interactive discussions o Homework and self-study o Exercises and worksheets o Student presentations o Teamwork; partner discussions o Video and PowerPoint o D2L assignments.

DISABILITY ACCOMODATIONS AND PERSONAL COUNSELING ON CAMPUS:
Savannah State University is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities, as required under federal law. Disabilities may include learning disabilities, ADD, psychological disorders, brain injury, Autism spectrum disorders, serious chronic medical illnesses, mobility impairment, vision or hearing loss or temporary injuries. SSU also provides free, professional, confidential, individual and group counseling, homeless services and referrals. The Counseling and Disability Centers are located in King Frazier 233, 8a.m. - 5p.m. 912 358 3129. Another resource for mental health emergencies is the GA Crisis and Access Line, available 24 hours a day at 1800 715 4225.

DRESS CODE:
For presentations, speeches, and guest speaker events, you are required to adhere to the COBA professional dress code unless advised otherwise by the instructor. Attire that is unacceptable at any time includes the following: • Ill fitting clothing (too tight; ultra short skirts/dresses; sagging pants) • Pajamas or loungewear • Tank tops, spaghetti string tops, strapless tops • Bare midriff or revealing clothing • Clothing with inappropriate language • Hats (never allowed in the classroom and applies to both men and women); o Ladies, if you aren’t sure about a particular form of headgear, ask me before assuming it will be okay.

ATTENDANCE: • Participation in class is important, and students who participate willingly throughout the semester will receive up to 5 points for that participation. • Attendance in every class is expected for the entire class period. Any deviation from this rule must be approved by the instructor beforehand. Leaving early without approval will result in a loss of points. • Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Late arrivals will be noted. Two unexcused late arrivals will be marked as an unexcused absence. • Up to 3 points will be subtracted from your final grade points for each unexcused absence. • Excused absences must be documented appropriately on the next day that class is attended. • If a student has an unexcused absence on a test day or a presentation day, the student will receive a 0 for that test/presentation/exercise. • Students who miss class are responsible for all homework/assignments missed and must hand in that work on the next day of attendance. Students are responsible for finding out what new work has been assigned. If students miss an exam and the absence is excused, students must arrange a date to take the exam with the instructor.

FOR SUCCESS IN THE COURSE: • Listen well during class discussions and take notes. Many students benefit from putting notes into bullet form rather than trying to write full sentences. Test material will come from the text and from classroom discussions, so it’s important to avoid distractions and avoid letting your attention wander. • Remember, reading is not studying. Studying requires a focused approach where you go back over main points, review the diagrams and charts, test yourself on definitions and concepts, and clarify any confusing statements. It is particularly helpful to outline assigned chapter readings. Doing so will help you prepare for tests, and it will help you learn the best way to outline material logically…an important skill in preparing to write reports. • If you don’t have one already, set up your e-learning account and SSU e-mail immediately. • You may benefit from using the Writing Lab for help with writing assignments. Writing assistance is available in Payne Hall, room 206. You can make appointments at www.appointment-plus.com.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY:
No electronic devices are to be seen or heard during regularly scheduled class time, quizzes, tests, or examinations – (note that this includes earpieces and ear buds). If any are observed or heard during class, the student may be excused from class. Should such devices be observed or heard during assessment periods, there will be the presumption of academic dishonesty; those found to be in violation of this policy will be subject to the consequences for academic dishonesty under the College of Business Administration Policy on Academic Dishonesty. If you wish to use a laptop of notepad to take notes ask me about it first. If I allow it, you must sit in the front of the room to do so. Any deviance from the ‘for notes only’ policy will result in no further privilege.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY:
Academic dishonesty includes copying another student’s work, handing in work done for you by another person, cheating on an exam/test/quiz, plagiarism, and untruthful information provided to me about your work. Plagiarism is not tolerated and refers to the use of someone else’s work without stating that you are doing so. Citations are required whenever you use others’ work to supplement your own. If you are uncertain about when to use citations in your document, ASK.

The minimum penalty for the student who is academically dishonest will be a grade of ZERO for the assignment; however, the instructor may well assign a grade of F for the semester. Incidents of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of the Dean of COBA, the COBA student Services Office (for inclusion in the student’s academic record) and to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:
All written assignments must be typed unless the instructor indicates otherwise. Written work should be free of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. Assignments that are not typed will receive a failing grade. Unless told otherwise, you will hand in written assignments during class; occasionally, I may ask you to submit assignments via D2L.

One inch from the top of each written assignment (except for business letters which have a different format), you should place your name, the due date, the name of the class, name of the assignment, and my name. All documents (letters, emails, reports, resumes, surveys, etc.) should follow the formats appropriate for each type.

Final Paper:
You will complete a paper that will be due at the end of the semester. You will also give an oral presentation of this paper. Specific instructions will be provided separately.

GRADING:
Each assignment will be given a set of points, and the points will vary a lot. For example, one quiz may be worth 25 points; another may be worth 32 points; another may be worth 100 points. At the end of the semester, the number of possible points will be added together to determine a total. The number of points you have earned will be divided by the total possible to calculate your grade for the course.

For example, if the total number of points for the semester equals 340 and you earn 290, your score would be 290 divided by 340 = .85 or 85%, a B. You will use this same method to calculate your score on any one assignment/quiz. For example, if the assignment is worth 40 points and you earn 35 points, your score would be .875 = .88 or 88%, a B.

It’s important to earn as many points as you can and to avoid any reductions from your points (because of attendance issues for example). One point can make a big difference. For example, if you earn 305 points out of a possible 340, your grade would be .897 or 90%; however, if you earn 304 points out of 340, your score would be .894 or 89%. One point can make the difference between an A and a B. (Remember, up to 5 additional points may be given for quality participation, but unexcused absences or arriving or leaving late without permission may result in negative points.)

Love Is Love

...men and women to form stable families to bear and raise children”. This is a good point of view from him, but why does loving someone of the same sex not give the right to raise a family and be just as happy? Some might say its discrimination; some might say it is unfair to humanity. Is it fair to take away the pursuit of happiness because a couple of the same sex wants the same as a couple of the opposite sex? Marriage brings on many new roles for couples like buying and taking care of a home, buying a vehicle, joining bank account, picking medical and life insurance. These rights of marriage are stripped from same-sex couples, not giving the equal right to be with the person they love and care for and what to build a life together with. Love is love, why should it be based on who you are in love with? When looking a same-sex marriage, I wonder if a person is making the choice to be with someone of the same sex, or if it is all they know and...

...Love is beautiful. Love is unconditional. Love is non judgemental. Love is care. Love is acceptance. Love is bliss. Love is pure. Love is serene. Love is calm. Love is silent. Love is not I, me or you. Love is us. Love is not wanting or expecting, Love is giving and accepting. Love is a strength that gives you courage to stand and act in a situation when you don’t even have the capacity to move. Love is a vibration that makes you strong. Love is a signal that binds the souls together. What I feel for my mother is Love. What I feel for my father is Love. What I feel for my sister is Love. What I feel for my brother is Love. What I feel for my grandparents is Love. But I don’t know how to show this Love. I never kissed my brother, or hugged my sister unoccassionaly or thanked my parents unreasonably or gifted my grandparents ever. I just don’t need these gestures to show my unconditional emotion to them. Do I? Dressed in a gorgeous piece came my princess and asked, “How am I looking Di?” And my “Yeah!!” Is enough for her to know that she is looking “Just Perfect”. On the Christmas Eve this year, a bundle of beautifully packed gift lied under my pillow. Holding them in my hands I rushed to my father and said, “Papa!! Santa gave me this”. And he knows that I was thanking MY PAPA SANTA. No matter how much treacherous our fights may be, and the next moment we are together playing Subway Surfers. This is my brother. Do I need to tell him SORRY explicitly? NO. Long days at...

It is a definition and meaning that philosophers, psychologists, and biologists have been seeking since the beginning of time. Wars have been waged and fought over it, while friendships have been initiated and have ended because of this idea. But what exactly is love, and why is it important to define this enigma? In order to help define this idea of love, several...

Love

... 10/14/2013 When I think of the word love it gives me chills because this is a powerful word. Today I am going to talk about the three people in this world that I know and have knowledge that they love me. They are my husband and my two sons. I have had a lot of people to ask me how you know for a fact that your husband loves you. That answer is very clear and simple to me, because its not just one thing he does to show me its many things. When I look at my husband I see a forever with him. We have been married almost nine years now and were just as in love today as we were nine years ago. We still tell each other how much we love each other on a daily basis. We write each other love poems to each other. We love to do everything together. We have our moments when we just look at each other and gaze into each other’s eyes and just smile. Even though we have been so long we still talk about our future together and how we can make it better. He loves to plan things in advance and he loves to reassure me that there is a future for us together. Every year since we have been married he has wanted to renew our vows, because he say that he would remarry me every day if he could. He always gives me compliments on a daily even if I know I look a hot mess he tells me how beautiful I am. He loves to talk and he is very kind and gentle with me. I have never met anyone that opened up to me like...

Love

...Nothing can come close to the love that a mother feels for her children. Most women are inherently excellent mothers. Women carry their young before they are born and then continue to nurture them throughout their childhood and even into adulthood. Mothers make sure that their children are safe and happy throughout their childhood. It is the unconditional love that a mother feels that drives these feelings. It is hard to describe the feeling that a mother has towards her children. In fact, most people do not understand unless they become a mother themselves. Raising children comes with its own share of frustrations, from the needy new born baby that requires regular care to the sullen teenager, a mother's job is anything but easy. A famous saying states that "God could not be everywhere and so he invented mothers", these words are a great inspiration to mothers across the world. When all is well, a mother puts her children before anything else, including their own comfort and happiness. Mothers give an awful lot of support to their children, whether it involves very visible support or simple background encouragement. Not only do mothers support their children, but they also often hold the whole family structure together. This role is not always plain sailing. A mother can also be upset or hurt. Remember that a mother often takes the fallout for the toddler tantrums and the teenage angst. Despite this, mothers, generally, will love their children no matter what they do. ...

Love

...Love At First Sight Amber woke up late, spilt coffee on her dress, and was in a rush to make it to work on time. She was frantically running through the automatic doors when all of a sudden she collided into, Chandler, a blue eyed muscular UPS worker. Their eyes locked and she braced herself as he grabbed her arm and steadied her fall. They didn't speak but held a glance for what seemed like minutes, and then they went their separate ways. Amber walked away from that scene, heart-pounding wondering if she would ever see him again because after all it was “love at first sight.” After a first meeting, one may passionately feel as if they fell in love because the attraction is instantaneous, some may describe it as “fireworks” or “electricity” when its simply just sexual attraction. Is this attraction love at first sight? Or is it just a biological and scientific occurrence? Focusing in on the sexual attraction we see that research shows many hormones are involved in this process. Lets start at the brain, “you have motions, you also produce dopamine, a ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter that is associated with passion and addiction, and oxytocin, a hormone related to bonding” (Pincott, 4). With all of these neurotransmitters processing in the brain, it is said that ones pupils may enlarge when focusing on an object of desire (Pincott, 8). Research also shows that a person responds with their entire body when they feel desire. When one is around an object of their desire, adrenaline...

Love

...TO MY FIRST LOVE I can’t say that I loved you from the moment that we met. I can’t say that we were meant to be or that after years of separation we’ll finally break the walls that separate us and be one once more. I can’t say that in the time we’ve been apart I’ve become a better person, better for you….better for us. If I said anything along these lines it would have been a lie. There’s much I want to tell you and a lot that I know I shouldn’t. Let’s start at the beginning: I remember when we met. You were one of the popular people. I was not. Everyday prior to our meeting I was nothing more than a background image on a less-than-boring wall. But for some reason on this day you chose to acknowledge me. On this day you chose to talk to me. I’ll probably never know why, or care why for that matter, but you did and since then my life has never been the same. As if you pulled me into light from the dark, or as though you created something out of nothing I had existence. I had meaning in my life. And that meaning was you. I would wake up every morning just to see you smile. I would miss my bus on purpose just to spend a few extra moments in your presence. I would shed the few nickels and dimes I had to give you whatever happiness money could buy. I would have given you the earth, the moon and even the sun if it so pleased you. I would have done it all. When you’re young everyone tells you to shoot for the stars, but no one tells you how dangerous ambition can be. No one...

Love

...Love From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search For other uses, see Love (disambiguation). Archetypal lovers Romeo and Juliet portrayed by Frank Dicksee Love is an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment.[1] Love is also a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection —"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another".[2] Love may describe actions towards others or oneself based on compassion or affection.[3] In English, love refers to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from pleasure ("I loved that meal") to interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). "Love" may refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the sexual love of eros, to the emotional closeness of familial love, to the platonic love that defines friendship,[4] or to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love[5], or to a concept of love that encompasses all of those feelings. This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, compared to other emotional states. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.[6] Love may be understood as part of the survival instinct, a function to keep...
