“Love Poems” I did not really like this short story because of the surprise ending. I normally enjoy surprise endings, but this story went from a positive and lovely romance to a disgusting and deplorable man. Although I did not appreciate the context of the story, I thought the irony of the words “love poems” and “her” within the story were interesting. “Love poems” is a plural word, yet there is only one love poem being sent out. “Her” is a singular pronoun, yet “her” is used interchangeably between several women. The “her” at the beginning of the story in the first sentence is different from the “her” at the end of the story in the last sentence, but the poem is still the same.
“The Haircut” This story was okay to me. The time span of this short story is probably only a few seconds, yet the detail that is described takes much longer than a few seconds to read. This story shows how complicated the female mind is. In a matter of seconds and within just a few glances, this woman’s opinion of her ex-husband changes drastically. Each paragraph in the short story was slowly piecing together this woman’s view of the ex-husband just as their relationship was slowly being pieced back together. I was surprised by the ending since she seemed to have an epiphany an no doubt in this relationship anymore. I had no idea that the woman would say “Who cut your hair?” as the ex-husband came in to hug her. A relationship, like a hair, takes a while to grow, yet both can be cut and gone so quickly and easily. I also liked the insert of the flashback to show how many connections our minds can make in seconds.
