“Loving yourself inside and out” Maleeka Madison, an eleven year old, in the seventh grade was having problems with students making fun of her. Not being appealing enough to her peers with very dark skin and homemade clothes was the start of her troubles. Very smart, however, being made fun of distracted her from her work. Other’s words helped develop her insecurities and low self-esteem which made her not see anything good about herself. Often feeling alone when with people, she was isolated to herself. The detachment of her favorite person in the world, her father, was the worst of all her problems. The person who was always there, always ready to talk, and always checking up on her: Gone! Do you know who Maleeka reminds me of? She reminds me of myself. Getting called ugly by my peers, although not because of my facial features, but because of my attire and the fact my hair was never done was the start of me being a target by other students in the poor, urban middle school I went to; only having one floor and two long hallways. Always wearing two matted puffy pony tails classified me as ugly. Now don’t get me wrong I didn’t always get defensive nor did I get upset, some of things said were funny. Bullying at times could be exaggerated, although there were serious bulling situations. Nevertheless, not always a person is trying to hurt you by telling you what you look like or how they feel about you. However, in Main Street Middle school it was normal. Everyone talked about everyone for no reason in particular, but because they wanted to and they could. Being talked about wasn’t a major issue at first for me to tell authority or get someone in trouble because talking about people was considered to be fun at times. When you and a group a friends would crack jokes about each other and laugh about the immature slurs that were said, this was okay and no one took offense. For example we would have “roast sessions” at lunch. These were sessions that gave people the opportunity to talk about you and you the opportunity to talk about them with funny jokes such as “Your sneakers look like you brought them out the 99 cents store” or “God don’t like ugly so why are you praying for new clothes for Christmas?” or “Your mom so fat she sat on top of a rainbow and skittles popped out.” Most jokes were corny, but we laughed at them anyway. Despite me not taking offense this led up to me being a target. Not only did friends talk about me, others joined in as well. Middle school is where bullying started for me and it took a while to get over. I just didn’t know as I continued to let my peers talk about me it would get worst and this would turn into a serious situation lowering my self- esteem. I felt lonely, along with becoming bitter and angry. Although we had uniforms, that were khaki pants and white polo collared shirts, I grew extraordinarily faster than the clothes my mom brought so they were either hanging off me or too tight. Nothing I ever wore fit me correctly, because I had legs as long as a corn stalk and a torso as small and chubby as a wiener dog, and students noticed. I wasn’t the cutest kid either, wearing thin wire glasses that made me look like an old lady, white reebok sneakers that looked like orthopedic shoes, along with a short fat neck that made my collared shirts look like turtle necks. These were all obvious things to pin point and talk about. I noticed too, that some of the kids weren’t the best looking either. There was a trio of ninja turtle looking triplets who had the yellowest teeth, and I knew they had rancid breath with acne that caused huge craters on their faces that were one of the first people to talk about me. Also there was this girl that had huge bugged out eyes, ripped dirty pants and a too tight shirt with her ashy hairy belly poking from the bottom that had the nerve to talk about me too. Unfortunately, the students got deeper with their jokes and hurtful words and it wasn’t just the four I spoke about it was way more kids than that. Being a popular subject of the students negatively hurts. Nonetheless, with the teachers I was a popular student to be talked about positively. Teachers expressed to me that I am a joy to have in class from my passion to learn and read. I could have been considered a nerd except the students also knew it wasn’t amusing to get bad grades. So most of my peers worked hard to achieve brilliant grades just as I. Luckily I wasn’t made fun for that. Teachers recommending me to go the after school enrichment program must have been the most amazing event to boost my self- esteem. Meeting an after school program volunteer named V helped me cope with the disrespectful words. Also going through the same issues as me being talked about and pin pointed as a target, V was my inspiration. V was an African American college student attending Widener College. Wearing little spikes growing out of her head starting the style of dreads, ethno centric clothes, such as dashikis, with loud gaudy jewelry, and vibrant lipstick colors on top of her very brown skin. Possessing confident, self- assured, and energetic qualities made me admire her so much. Especially, V not caring about the whispers she would get about her hair and bright colored lipstick. I remember her telling me she believed in herself no matter what others said. However, I told her that’s easier said than done because the words “No neck, grand mom Jamie, and high waters plus more” weren’t something you can ignore once repeatedly said to your face. Then, V presented the book The Skin I’m in to me. Reading this book in middle school as a 12 year old, made me have realize no one is perfect and I am not trying to be dramatic at all. Maleeka Madison, the main character, was going through the most similar situations as I did. I never connected to a fictional ever in my life. I read the book vividly as if my life depended on it, from front to back cover. We were both middle school girls who were not appealing enough in our peer’s eyes, making us have low self- esteem. Both smart, but when talked about it would interfere with our school work. Insecurities from others words dissuaded us from how we felt about ourselves. Lastly, we both had our fathers taken from us which led to living in a household with a single mother struggling to provide. Influencing me to be better than what others thought of me is what I learned from the book. Honestly, I wasn’t afraid of the students, however the things they said hurt my feelings. Also I couldn’t make fun of them all, otherwise they would gang up on me and that would have been worse than what I already was putting up with. Neither did I think to tell an adult because as I said before being made fun of was a normal thing at school. As I finished The Skin I’m in I realized I should have been more confident in myself. Despite how others feel towards me I needed to love myself. “If I don’t love my self who else will?” This was an influential statement bestowed upon me from my favorite book The Skin I’m in written by Sharon G Flake. Reading my now favorite book was an impact and I will always live by the lessons I learned from reading it. My positive literacy story starts with how I went through tribulations in school, however this book helped me through them. Today the book gives me confidence to do things I never would do. Such as running for black student union freshmen representative and donating blood. I am even enrolled in a leadership class to learn how to guide others to success. The Skin I’m in was the best book I ever read and will always be one of my favorites. Till this day I thank V for the book.

...is learning to love unconditionally. However, what is often overlooked, is the importance of loving yourself along with everything else. After all, aren't you a part of the whole of Life? Here is a wonderful old haiku which illustrates this... "On my horse, clip-clopping through the field. Aha! I'm part of the picture!" As you grow to realize that you are an integral part of Life's grand picture, it becomes clear that loving yourself along with everything else is part of the mission. Some of you may feel uncomfortable with the idea of self love, because it's often interpreted as being overly self involved. Many religions teach that total selflessness is the ideal, and that self love is the antithesis of being selfless. I'm not at all knocking selflessness, but is self love really opposed to selflessness? And is it the same as...

12 Cosmic Laws

...1. THE GREAT LAW - “As you sow, so shall you reap”. This is also known as the “Law of Cause and Effect”. Whatever we put out in the Universe is what comes back to us. If what we want is Happiness, Peace, Love, Friendship…Then we should BE Happy, Peaceful, Loving and a True Friend. 2. THE LAW OF CREATION - Life doesn’t just HAPPEN, it requires our participation. We are one with the Universe, both inside and out. Whatever surrounds us gives us clues to our inner state. BE yourself, and surround yourself with what you want to have present in your Life. 3. THE LAW OF HUMILITY - What you refuse to accept, will continue for you. If what we see is an enemy, or someone with a character trait that we find to be negative, then we ourselves are not focused on a higher level of existence. 4. THE LAW OF GROWTH - “Wherever you go, there you are”. For us to GROW in Spirit, it is we who must change – and not the people, places or things around us. The only given we have in our lives is OURSELVES and that is the only factor we have control over. When we change who and what we are within our heart our life follows suit and changes too. 5. THE LAW OF RESPONSIBILITY - Whenever there is something wrong in my life, there is something wrong in me. We mirror what surrounds us – and what surrounds us mirrors us; this is a Universal Truth. We must take responsibility what is in our life. 6. THE LAW OF CONNECTION - Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important...

Now if you really think about this, it’s more of a metaphor, than Greek mythology. Opening up to the unknown is scary even though most people don’t seem to ever realize this. Never ever knowing how much there really is out there. Most people choose to just ignore what’s really in front of them. Seeing things for what’s its really is. Effects of Having a Broken Family in Academic

...10 tips to mend a broken heart Bess Myerson once wrote that “to fall in love is awfully simple, but to fall out of love is simply awful.” Especially if you are the one who wanted the relationship to last. Mending a broken heart is never easy. There is no quick way to stop your heart from hurting so much. To stop loving isn’t an option. Author Henri Nouwen writes, “When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful.” But how do we get beyond the pain? Here are 10 tips I’ve gathered from experts and from conversations with friends on how they patched up their heart and tried, ever so gradually, to move on. 1. Go through it, not around it. I realize the most difficult task for a person with a broken heart is to stand still and feel the crack. But that is exactly what she must do. Because no shortcut is without its share of obstructions. Here’s a simple fact: You have to grieve in order to move on. During the 18 months of my severe depression, my therapist repeated almost every visit: “Go through it. Not around it.” Because if I went around some of the issues that were tearing me apart inside, then I would bump into them somewhere down the line, just like being caught in the center of a traffic circle. By going through the intense pain, I eventually surfaced as a stronger person ready to tackle problems head on. Soon the...

...April Westmoreland 04-21-2016 “Gender Languages In Birthday Congratulatory Cards” As you walk into a store to search for a congratulatory card, it can be daunting to pick out that specific card you need for the special occasion. As a society, we often rush to get a specific card without really thinking about how the congratulatory cards are a part of the “gender language” in our society. Gender language is the properties and visuals in our society that divides gender into different categories through the “language” it gives off. A perfect example of this is the variety of cards within stores, supermarkets, and specialty retailers. Upon entering these businesses, it is apparent that most of the cards are geared toward appealing to women due to the fact large sections of the card categories are for mothers, wives, sisters, daughters in comparison to the small sections of the card categories that are geared towards husbands, brothers, fathers, sons. This project will focus on the gender language segregation that is prevalent within the congratulatory cards in stores. We will focus on the structure of the cards, the visuals, the symbols used to appeal to different genders as well as the importance of the words that are used in the cards to draw in consumers of different gender. We must first look at what gender means, according to Henslin, gender is the socially learned behaviors that are attached to the sexes (Henslin, p. 322). Due to behaviors being socially learned...

...lost track of what was most important. My dream somehow turned into a reality of being stressed out, and unhappy. It finally hit me...... Work had become my life's purpose. Like so many other entrepreneurs, I started my business for a chance at freedom and opportunity to be the master of my own destiny. I had visions of success and money, and with that I believed I could one day finally be happy. But the reality was I was not happy. I was miserable. I won't bare you with business concepts, but there is one important concept I learned that changed my life and I want to share it with you. All great companies have four things: purpose, vision, mission and care values. I asked myself, why can't I apply these ideas to my life? So I did, and here's how you can apply it to. Your life's purpose is the reason why you exist. It's the reason for being. Let me ask you again, because it's in my humble opinion, the most important question you could ever ask yourself – why do you exist? In the past, if you asked me what my life's purpose was – I would have told you it was to make lots of money. Believe me, there's nothing wrong with making money, but for myself, I finally realized it was not the reason why I exist. It was only an enabler at best. Finding your life's purpose is very much about yourself. Life with a purpose drives you when you wake up each morning. But figuring it out takes time. After pondering and pondering with no answer, I finally asked myself the following...

This album has 12 tracks that you can take pleasure in listening to. It’s not following the music trend that a pretty face and a nice body will sell your album. Fantasia is a beautiful person inside and out, but her realness and angelic voice should be enough to sell this album. Fantasia has proven herself on this album by singing songs that we all have heard before. You can feel that her heart is in every track on this album. She is in the league with the other R&B divas such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, India Arie, Jill Scott, and Joss Stone. Fantasia recruited some of the hit makers to work with her on this album. Claude Kelly, Rico Love, Cee-lo Green, and Ne-Yo who wrote Beyonce’s hit, “To The Left,” another all time ladies anthem. “Man Of The House,” “I’m Here” and “Who’s Been Loving You” are not my favorite tracks. Other R&B female artists have sung about their independence or I’m the right woman for you. The doo-wop sound of “Collard Greens & Cornbread” is one of my favorite tracks off this album. Does Hamlet Love Ophelia

...Hamlet suddenly opened Ophelia’s door in shock and Ophelia glared at him absentmindedly. He grabbed her hand physically and observed her like there was a spider on her face. Ophelia examined him in confusion thinking about what is wrong with him. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet shows Ophelia how much he loves her with a letter that he writes her. However, sometimes he does not show it at times. Although, when he finds out that Ophelia died, he shows everyone that he loves her with all his heart. Hamlet undeniably loves Ophelia because he cares, he is protective, and he made sure she was happy. Hamlet shows he loves Ophelia by reacting strongly after she dies. For example, when Hamlet finds out that Ophelia died, he screams to Laertes,”Will you cry? Fight? Stop eating? Cut yourself? Drink vinegar? Eat a crocodile? I’ll do all that,” (Shakespeare 297). Hamlet explains to Laertes that he will do anything to have her around one more time. He is devastated that Ophelia died. He just wishes to spend one more moment with her if she were alive. Conversation with Your Inner Self

...A Conversation with Your Inner Self Have you ever felt like you are fed up from having to deal with so many things at the same time? From trying to get things right but it seems like it’s getting worse? Have you ever felt like you are falling down and no one seems to understand you enough to help you get back up? Isn’t this the time where you feel like you should just carry on because you have to, not because you want too? Isn’t this the time where you feel sorry for yourself for feeling so weak and nothing seems to motivate you enough to act up and do something about it? If most of your answers to these questions are yes, then you should directly know that there is something you lack in the way you treat yourself through these times, but what’s that thing? Well, it differs from a person to person depending on the circumstances. Generally one thing we all have in common when we pass through such a phase is causing too much drama, and making things so much difficult than the really are, not to anyone, but to ourselves. It is when you are using a lot of your energy in trying to fix and analyse a situation, giving it all your attention which causes you to drift away with your own bubble of thoughts heading to one direction, narrowing your mind, closing your eyes and turning your back to everything else that is going around you. That’s the time where you will come up with this excuse of “I’m sick and tired to have to deal with this” or “I can’t really do anything about it”, from...

Abortion

...to a close relative, or a loving family that can't have children. Abortion is the worst thing a woman can do against human dignity. It is immoral and it should not be legalized. It is also a threat to the mother's health. A woman can suffer an infection or internal bleeding. No woman has the right to kill a new living being. In my eyes as a teenager I feel that if anyone was to get an abortion is committing a sin.  It is immoral and you’re only hurting yourself.  The group expresses a video that made me think how someone can go through such pain to get purge of something they started to make inside of them.  Seeing how they take it out and all of the baby’s parts and the separation of body parts made me sick to my stomach.  I feel in this country as Catholics we should stop and take action that destroys everything we believe in.  It’s understandable that you can’t have a baby or don’t want it.  But as I see it people should have the baby and give it up for adoption at least the kid can live.         The group did a nice job expressing what they thought was wrong about it.  They gave enough information for me to understand how our country works and how many abortions per day there are.  Killing a human being no matter if it a month or two months its living is what counts.  For anyone to take someone’s life like that well it’s morally and sinfully wrong to do as a Catholic.  The church disagrees with it and yet people think it’s the only way out.  If I was a higher person...
