...Loving v. Virginia A Landmark Supreme Court Case of Interracial Marriages Natasha Plotnikov GVPT 432 Professor Davis December 4th, 2013 Loving v. Virginia was a very important Supreme Court case. It played a significant role in the civil rights movement: the legalization of interracial marriage. The case evaluates the constitutional question whether a statutory law of Virginia is solely based on racial discrimination and if it violates the Equal Protection and Due process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Equal Protection Clause forbids states from denying any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws (Epstein, Walker, 2013). Nevertheless, for the couple it was just a fight to stay married and be treated as equal as every legally married couple. They were simply in love and never intended to be in the center of attention. Richard and Mildred Loving were residents of the small town of Central Point, Virginia. They had dated each other since they were teenagers. When they decided to get married Richard learned that marriage...

...It was the summer of 1958, when Richard and Mildred Loving were a new couple sleeping in bed. All of a sudden the police, which were armed, slammed in their house arresting both of them and throwing them in jail, for getting married. But, why? Getting married isn’t a bad thing is it? Well if you married a different race, apparently in the 1950’s and especially in Virginia state, it was bad. The certificate of the new couple's marriage was from Washington D.C. , but under the law of Virginia state, two people of different races can not marry each other. Richard Loving was a white man who fell in love with a black woman, Mildred Loving, and married her. After five weeks of their marriage, they were arrested. They spent several days in jail...

...I found book The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm to be an interesting and easy to read book. Throughout the book, Fromm goes about applying his theories about love to how people go about their lives. I found myself agreeing with most of the things that he said and when I applied them to real life examples I found most of them to be true. Fromm first begins by saying that people think that there is not anything to be learned about love and there are a few premises on why people believe this. To start, people’s problems are not based on the question of if they are capable of loving; it is the questions of are they lovable and are people able to love them (Fromm, 1). People use different paths in order to achieve being loved. The first path is mostly used by men in which their goal is to be as successful, powerful, and as rich as their place in society would allow them. The next one is mainly used by women where they make themselves attractive by dressing and looking a certain way. Both men and women make them themselves attractive to others by learning how to interact with other people and hold conversations, be modest, and develop pleasant manners (Fromm, 2). Fromm states, “… what most people in our culture mean by being lovable is essentially a mixture between being popular and having sex appeal (Fromm, 2).” Secondly, people assume that love is simple, but finding the thing to be loved is the difficult part. During the Victorian age people married for social reasons and people...

...would. She takes my hand in hers. My hand on her dress she draws my attention in her direction. “Hey you,” I say. “Hey,” she says as her eyes focus on my chest. She places her hands there. “I didn’t know you would come tonight.” I say, struggling for words. “You didn’t?” “I’m lying.” “That one’s fine. But don’t lie to me.” “I can’t.” She brushes hair away from her face. “I know you can’t. That’s part of what I love about you.” My hands find a way to make her dress drop to floor. Her hands find the way to make my clothes magically appear next to her dress. We inhale and exhale each other’s breaths. Eyes locked into each other with every caress. Longing given a brief moment of rest. Skin on skin, sweat on sweat, the same kind of loving and laughter as if we’d just met. « Older...

...”How much we know and understand ourselves is critically important, but there is something that is even more essential to living a wholehearted life: loving ourselves.”- Brene Brown At the surface of this statement I hear that we must love ourselves for ourselves. Digging a little deeper into this quote and I also am feeling that we have to first love ourselves in order to love others. Living a wholehearted life means to access your whole ‘loving’ heart in everything you say or do; using your heart for genuine good. Loving ourselves for who we are and not waiting on who we want to become. Loving yourself allows you to show that love to others. Showing gratitude and joy as we go about our daily routines makes life worth living. If it is the connection that defines our purpose we should stay positively connected for life. For life…in order to live. As we need air to breathe we need connections to love. Again loving ourselves first and allowing that love to radiate through and around our being, making connections along the way. In the field as a youth worker this can be transferred by bringing your highest self to the experience when working with the youth. As a youth worker our job is to facilitate the growth and development of the youth. In doing so we have to make sure all our actions are intentional and within that intent filled with love. To truly make a difference in this field of youth work we must continue to bring our wholehearted living to the forefront...

...When I speak about the little children starting to school, I always think of love for all the children, no matter what background situation they may come from. When children feel special and accepted, it gives them the confidence to feel they can conquer the world. It is very important for the teacher to work hand and hand with the parent whenever possible. Steps and plans should be put in place before the first day of class to involve the parents in every aspect of their child entering school. According to Jeynes, (2005a, 2005b, 2007b), “research indicates more subtle types of parental involvement many have a more puissant influence on student achievement than other involvement expressions, such as checking homework and maintaining household rules.” Parents should not have too many high expectations for the children and the teachers; children should be able to work at their own pace and not pushed or threatened. Parents that are involved on a regular basis with the teacher will understand how the child is progressing and what it is the parent’s needs to do at school. There are many important things that parents should be involved in with the teachers and student as early as kindergarten. Some children start kindergarten not knowing how to count, say the alphabet or spell their name. Jeynes, (2011) explains, “A second important subtle aspect of parental involvement is communication about school between parent and children.” Families sometimes have problems communicating at...

...In loving memory of… In August 2008, I had just returned from two months in Spain. Practically my entire wardrobe had travelled with me during the summer, which explained the gigantic amount of laundry I now had to face. After six times up and down the stairs, I had managed to get all of my clothes down to the basement of my building into the laundry room. I started the washing machines, all nine of them, and returned to my apartment. About an hour later I returned to the laundry room, to collect my clothes, but my findings there was extremely unpleasant - every single machine had been emptied. Subsequent to my findings, it occurred to me that I was the unfortunate victim of an awful crime – the worst crime any girl with a loving relationship to her wardrobe could ever imagine. Somebody had stolen my laundry! It took a while for me to calm down, but I knew what I needed to do. I grabbed the phone and called the police, in the hope that they could solve this unbearable crime I had been faced with. The policeman I talked to did not seem very surprised to hear what had happened to me. Apparently people get their laundry stolen all the time. I really can’t believe who would do something like that. It is a meaningless act of cruelness I have been put through. I have grieved the loss of my dear wardrobe for a long time. I think I have reached a point now, a year and a half later, where it is time for me to move on, and start a new relationship with my new bought clothes...

...Critical Analysis of “The More Loving One” By W.H. Auden W.H. Auden’s “The More Loving One” is an intriguing poem that touches on the topics of love and humanity in the form of astrology. Auden uses a number of poetic devices to portray this message clearly to his audience. He doesn’t however write a direct translation of what he thinks of love but instead uses metaphors in order to challenge the readers’ imagination. Auden in this poem compares human beings to stars. This comparison can be criticised as being very unfair as stars are both literally and metaphorically above humans. This is evident upon reading “…That for all they care, I can go to hell.” The fact that he used objects of such importance allows readers to appreciate that Auden does not feel that humans are on the same level of stars. He is trying to reduce the dominance that humans seem to have over everything by saying that even though we spend so much time trying to understand stars they really do not care much about humans. Auden wants his audience to acknowledge that if we as humans realised mans insignificance in the universe then maybe we can begin to comprehend stars and all their mysteries. By the second stanza the poem becomes more difficult. The roles of the stars change and they are depicted as inferior to humans, which is what we see them as anyway. Auden asks the rhetorical question of how would we feel if stars were treated the way they treat us. What if humans could not reciprocate the love...

...“My Personal Testimony” I have grown up in church all of my life, more specifically in a Catholic Church. I was raised in a Christian home. We went to church every Sunday, went every Sunday night, and every Wednesday night. For me, going to church was natural. If I ever missed a week, it was because I was sick. I was baptized when I was six years old. The entire congregation of my Church supported me and helped mold me into who I am today. During my freshman year of high school, my grandfather had a heart attack and died. This was a huge shock to me. For the next couple of weeks, I kept all of my emotions to myself. Even now, it is still hard to talk about. Eventually my emotions bottled up for too long and I thought about suicide. I did not want to talk about it, but I did not know another way to release my pent up emotions. The one thing that allowed me to cope was working in the audio and video team at Church. The crew members there really helped me to forget about what had happened. They have been very supportive in many different ways. Because of their commitment to helping me cope with the loss of my grandfather, I wanted to help out in any way I could. It made me feel very good to work every week in church, knowing that I was repaying those people who helped me out during one of the darkest parts of my life. I am still working on the audio and video team at church. Even though the work that the audio and video team and I do often goes unnoticed, I still enjoy serving...

...outlook of an atheist and their direct response and quotations of their dislike and disapproval our living and loving god. You will also receive my response of disgust and disapproval of the opinions created by a non Christian who believes in a creator without wanting to admit that it is our living god. Agnosticism Rebuttal In the article “For God So Loved the World, that He Was Completely Indifferent to It &Us” (atheism.about.com/od/arguementsagainstgod) the author Austin Cline claims that how does a god who loves people allow people to have problems, kill one another, rape people, and suffer financially. Anyone who was raised like I was in a Christian home knows that trials and tribulations are reflection of Lucipher who is allowed to attempt our free will and choice. Austin goes on throughout his article questioning how are we capable of loving something on faith that we cannot see. Well that is simple every day we live on something created by our living god that we cannot see and that would be air. So to claim that it is stupid and immoral to love something that you cannot see is just ignorant. “Indifference, however, means really not caring what happens – not caring if one lives or dies, prospers or fails, experiences pleasure or suffering.” (Austin Cline) This may be true to an atheist or another form of non-believer but to our loving god it is not so. My god gave his son up to die and then conquer death so that we may have ever lasting life in...
