...LSP 121 Homework 5: Logs and Richter Scale, Decibels Open the file logs.xls (found on the QRC website under Excel Files). You will use this file for both parts below. Click on the worksheet tabs at the bottom to access the other file. 1. Richter scale The Richter scale is used to measure the intensity of earthquakes. It is a logarithmic relationship with the following formula: R = log(I) I is the intensity of the earthquake and R is the number on the Richter scale. (Remember that if there is no base written with the log it is base 10). Don’t be scared off by logs. Think of them as a short-cut way of writing large numbers. For example, let’s say the intensity of an earthquake is 100,000,000. Can you imagine if the papers published that big number? What would people think? Most people cannot handle well numbers with large amounts of zeros (unless those people work for the government ;-). Instead of writing 100,000,000, let’s just write how many zeros there are. In this case, there are 8 zeros. That’s exactly what log10 is asking. 10 to what power equals 100,000,000? 10 to the 8th power. So the log(100,000,000) equals 8. Thus, the Richter value for an earthquake with intensity 100,000,000 is 8. Let’s say it another way. Let’s remove the log. Converting the above formula from log form to exponent form would give us: 10R = I (Note: 10 was raised to the R power, which cancels the log function.) Which version you use depends on which variable you...

Fine Theoretical Physics Institute, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455 USA E-mail: olive@umn.edu Observational evidence and theoretical motivation for dark matter are presented and connections to the CMB and BBN are made. Problems for baryonic and neutrino dark matter are summarized. Emphasis is placed on the prospects for supersymmetric dark matter. 1. Lecture 1 The nature and identity of the dark matter of the Universe is one of the most challenging problems facing modern cosmology. The problem is a long-standing one, going back to early observations of mass-to-light ratios by Zwicky1 . Given the distribution (by number) of galaxies with total luminosity L, φ(L), one can compute the mean luminosity density of galaxies L= which is determined to be2 L ≃ 2 ± 0.2 × 108 ho L⊙ M pc−3 (2) Lφ(L)dL (1) where L⊙ = 3.8 × 1033 erg s−1 is the solar luminosity. In the absence of a cosmological constant, one can define a critical energy density, ρc = 3H 2 /8πGN = 1.88 × 10−29 ho 2 g cm−3 , such that ρ = ρc for three-space curvature k = 0, where the present value of the Hubble parameter has been defined by Ho = 100ho km Mpc−1 s−1 . We can now define a critical mass-to-light ratio is given by (M/L)c = ρc /L ≃ 1390ho(M⊙ /L⊙ ) (3) ∗ Summary of lectures given at the Theoretical Advanced...

...Cisco Network Solutions for the Telco DCN: SONET/SDH OSI Environments This document is directed to competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs), and Post, Telephone and Telegraphs (PTTs), collectively referred to as telcos (short for telephone companies). This document describes Cisco network solutions for transporting data between Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and the Operations Support System (OSS) in a telco data communications network (DCN). The DCN transports network management traffic between network elements and their respective OSS, making them a vital link between the service network and the network operations center (NOC). The solutions presented in this document will help telcos connect their SONET/SDH network elements to a router-based network using the Open System Interconnection (OSI) protocol, which simplifies the DCN and reduces equipment costs. Version History Version Number 1 Date April 28, 2004 Notes This document was created as a joint effort between Don Schriner in the Cisco CTO Consulting Engineering Group and Alliene Turner in Cisco IOS Documentation. This document was updated. This document was updated. 2 3 May 6, 2005 January 3, 2008 Contents The document presents the recommended Cisco architecture for building the OSI network. Several methods for implementing and scaling an OSI network are included with detailed configuration examples. Specific...
