Luce and Wallace
Even before the World War II, United States had clearly become more powerful, and it played a more effective role in international affairs then before. World War II was the largest struggle humankind has ever seen. It killed more people, cost more money, damaged more property, affected more people, and caused more far-reaching changes in nearly every country than any other war in history. United States hoped to stay out of the war because of the experiences they had in World War I. However, Americans in General, while not wishing to fight the war, were definitely not acting neutral. After the WWII began in Europe in 1939, people in the America were divided on whether their country should take part or stay out. The isolationists wanted the country to stay out of the war at almost any cost. Another group, the interventionists, wanted the United States to do all in its power to aid the Allies (u-s-history). They were several Blueprints for the post war and variety of different ideas about it. “One of the most celebrated blueprints for the postwar world was written in 1941 by Henry Luce, the publisher of Life and Time magazines. In American Century, Luce sought to mobilize the American people for both the coming war and era of postwar world leadership”(Foner 193). The ideology of Luce was that Americans should be aware of that the role history had push upon them as the world’s most powerful nation. In the other hand, “Many Americans who deplored the Bombastic tone of Luce’s call for an American Century welcomed the response offered by Vice President Henry Wallace (Foner196). Henry Wallace claimed that not any single power should rule the world. Henry R. Luce and Henry A. Wallace had invoked the same ideology of interceding to the war, however, the outcome of their ideas for the postwar were different from each.
