I have been hoping to develop my career path in music industry since childhood. I determined to be successful in this industry. There are hundreds of people who became very successful and one of them is Ludwig van Beethoven. According to Jane S. Van Ingen (n.d.), "By the time Beethoven was 40 years old in 1810, he had given the world six symphonies, 15 piano sonatas, 10 quartets, five concertos, a ballet, an opera and a choral mass" (para. 1). Beethoven is one of the greatest masters in music composition with no doubt. He became so successful even though he was coming from an abusive family, became deaf at the age of 31, his love left him to marry another man and he got the custody of his nephew who hated him (Swimmer, 1998). He changed his focus from being a virtuoso pianist to a composer after he realized that being a pianist was impossible for him due to lost of hearing (Van Ingen, n.d.). Beethoven changed his focus to composing which made him one of the greatest composers of all-time (Van Ingen, n.d.). He is famous of composing symphonies. Those nine symphonies he composed became his representative works. "In the summer of 1803, he began working on the third symphony, the Eroica." (Van Ingen, n.d., para. 6). "The Fifth Symphony, his most famous work, illustrates fate knocking at the door, and the Sixth Symphony (The Pastoral), a portrait of the countryside around Heilingenstadt, were completed in the summer of 1808." (Van Ingen, n.d., para. 7). "He was finally granted custody of Carl in 1820 and The Ninth Symphony (Choral) was completed three years later." (Van Ingen, n.d., para. 8). These show that six of his nine symphonies are composed after he became deaf. In music industry, there are so many ways to go. For example, performing, composing, engineering, teaching… Not all aspects are the best way to go for everyone. I need to choose an aspect to go to after my graduation. From Beethoven, I learned that I can always change my focus to an aspect that works the best for myself. I have faced a similar situation before. I chose my principal musical instrument as violin because I thought that I learned it for the longest period of time so that I may have better knowledge in it. However it did not work well. This made me thought that I might be not suitable for music industry and this troubled me a lot. By using this skill, changing focus, I can change my principal instrument to another instrument that I learned to try which of them is the best for me. This can help me to get away from being depressed when something does not work
