Third, insert the wand into the vial without getting any of the solution on the foam stopper. Once the flies are knocked-out, take the wand out. The second method is using the Alka- Seltzer tablets. First, fill the tube ¼ full with cold water. Next, lay the vial on its side, and knock the flies to the bottom. Then, insert about ¼ of an Alka- Seltzer tablet into the tube. Quickly, put the topper (with tubing) into the tube, and put the pipet tip between the wall of the vial and the foam stopper. Identifying Sex- Place some knocked-out flies onto a notecard. ...Discuss the use of imagery in two stories of your choice. How do the various images work in a particular story to bring its subject matter into focus? Is there a central image? And how does this enhance or confuse or complicate the effect of the story? Short fiction can be seen as a literary medium through which the writer concisely creates a story that is almost as fleeting in its detail, as it is in its length of words. Imagery can be used in varying manners depending on what the writer is trying to achieve. In the short story ‘Sleepy’ by Anton Chekhov, we see a more vivid and palpable type of imagery that’s almost figurative and has the ability to lull the reader into sharing the protagonist’s feelings rather than just her surroundings. On the contrary, Katherine Mansfield’s ‘Her First Ball’, utilises strong, descriptive imagery that paints the setting, and the events occurring within, rather than bluntly focusing on the feelings associated with them. In ‘Sleepy’, Chekhov successfully evokes a strong feeling of the setting without being superfluous in his description. He provides an image of the tiny room at the beginning of the story and reinforces it throughout. In doing so, Chekhov portrays Varka’s painfully scarce reality to emphasise the huge contrast between the immediate scenario and the imagery describing her flustered dreams. It’s Varka’s need for sleep that seems to be the subject matter throughout the narrative, her exhaustion and inability to stay awake and...

...The imagery of nature in Stephen Crane's "A Man and Some Others" shows the idea that the beauty of nature remains constant despite the ongoings of mankind. The first significant example of this is when the Mexicans are sneaking into Bill’s camp with the intent to kill him. Crane created a beautiful picture of a camp saying, “Finally, when the great moon climbed the heavens... ...the inconsequence of individual tragedy.” (Crane). This beautiful picture brought to life with images of a brilliant crimson campfire is a sharp contrast to the ghastly deed the Mexicans have in mind, yet nature remains unchanged. Crain creates a very similar image after the Mexicans and Bill began the shoot out. Crane describes a lull in the conflict by writing, “The...

...It's how I spend my time when feeling happy or sad or angry. Sewing makes me feel content while creating and overjoyed when finished. My machine has grown to be one of my dearest friends. It keeps me company on Friday nights, when I'm listening to Schubert, Taylor Swift, or sometimes its her gentle lull of the foot and needle making stitches beat by beat. Which, coincidentally, the machine's lullaby is one of my favorite sounds of the world. It's almost as euphonious as rain hitting glass, but can't hold a candle to the sound of trees rustling. I find the smell of fresh fabric one of the most intoxicating and wonderful smells in the world. It's almost as euphoric as the smell of cookies and cream ice cream, but can't hold a candle to the the smell of a brand new book (which, by the way, is my favorite scent in the world). To be completely honest, I don't know what makes me love the scent of crisply ironed cotton or satin. But if I could guess, I would infer that it comes from the association to fabric stores and memories of walking into...

It is important to ask how these young men will be affected when they are put into a life that proves to be much different than the comfortability of their own home. ...What Is A Hurricane? In its simplest terms a hurricane is a storm system of very strong winds accompanied by clouds and heavy rain - which circles around a calm center. This calmness in the center of a hurricane, often referred to as the “eye of the storm” can literally lull people into a false sense of security; and thinking that the worst of the hurricane has passed they either open their doors and windows or worse venture outdoors, only to be caught out by the hurricanes second phase. Although anyone in a hurricane will experience very heavy rainfall, the key feature they will experience is, beyond doubt, the incredible strength of the wind. So How Does a Hurricane Work? Hurricanes begin over warm tropical seas with the movement of a mass of air. The movement of air, wind, is caused by changes in atmospheric pressure as the air warms and cools due to the heating effects of the sun. Warm air is under higher pressure than cold air and so moves towards the ‘space’ occupied by the colder, lower pressure, air. The speed with which the air moves, from a high pressure space into a low pressure one, depends on the differences in pressure between the two spaces. A small difference in air pressure results in a gentle wind. A large difference in air pressure will result in a high wind. How A Hurricane Is Born The risk of a hurricane forming arises on occasions when the air movement starts to circle; specifically when the air pressure on the inside of the circle is extremely low...

...publishers to expand the market for their products. Many books are now only produced as e-books. This helps to get the publishers more profit from each book because they are not having to pay for materials to make the book. Many publishers believe that e-books are the sole way that book publishing companies can expand in the future. With the advancements of computer technology, the sales of specific books can be closely monitored. By doing so, publishers can easily make note of which books are selling rapidly. This way they make the necessary copies of the book so that stores never run out of copies of their book. This helps to keep the generated profits from those books at its maximum potential because it is preventing an unnecessary lull in profits because of all of the copies of a book being sold out. Much of the process for book publishing is done via the Internet now. Authors can e-mail their book manuscripts to publishers instead of having to use traditional mailing techniques, which cost more time and money. After the editing process, the finished book can be e-mailed anywhere in the world, allowing for quick access to the book anywhere in the world and the ability to publish the book anywhere in the world while avoiding shipping...

...Summer hangs, and summer lulls. Lay in the park, smoke in the dark, as the song goes. Its lush grass and leaves and flowers and cushioning warmth brings with it particular sluggishness, a wading. The days are slower, the sun is hotter, and the air is thick and saccharine like molasses, slowing down the traffic of our thoughts and of our discourse. The season’s circular shoegaze marks for us a lens of the mind with which we are familiar; in our youth and not, between chores and shifts, our minds hang, freely detaching themselves from the surrounding world as they see fit. In our off hours, we wake up, we stroll about. We go for a light lunch before coming back to the raggedy armchair on our porches to get back to finishing House of Leaves or...

...After Arlene dissipated on July 1, there was about a two week lull in activity, before Bret, Cindy, and Don developed in the latter half of July. August was the most active month of the season, featuring eight tropical cyclones – Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Tropical Depression Ten, Jose, and Katia. The number of named storms in August was well above the 1944-2010 average of four,[24] and just one short of the record of eight set in 2004 and later in 2012,[25] but the number of hurricanes was below the mean.[24] September was slightly above average,[26] with 5 named storms, 2 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane and featuring the unnamed tropical storm, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, and Philippe. Ophelia was the most intense tropical cyclone of the season, peaking as a Category 4 hurricane with winds...

... Birds are something we see everyday of our lives and don’t pay much attention to. They fly with beauty and elegance, engulfing the sky as they fly without a care in the world. John Audubon and Annie Dillard are two individuals that took the time to admire these beautiful creatures. Both individuals describe the birds in flight, but it such different ways. Dillard gives an artful description of the bird’s movement while Audubon gives a scientific description. Audubon takes a scientific approach when speaking of the large number of pigeons in flight. Even though he doesn’t necessarily use specific scientific terms, when compared to Dillard’s piece, he is much more professional in a way. He says things like, “the … buzz of wings had a tendency to lull my senses to repose.” While this is not hard to understand, it still creates a deeper thought in the reader’s mind rather than just saying, “the sound of their wings relaxed me.” This strategy of scientific descriptions and professionalism give a stronger realization to what the writer is actually trying to say, and what image he was trying to produce in the reader’s mind. Audubon speaks more sophisticated when he explains the flock as “rushing in a compact mass” and darting “forward in undulating and angular lines.” The scientific approach demonstrated here gives the illusion that this specific piece may be directed towards those who like to look at things through the eyes of science. Dillard’s piece is an antithesis of Audubon’s...

...Tax-cuts and Spending Merriam-Webster defines Keynesianism as “that advocacy of monetary and fiscal programs by government to increase employment and spending (Keynesianism, 2012).” Investopedia gives a similar definition stating that Keynesian economics is “An economic theory stating that active government intervention in the marketplace and monetary policy is the best method of ensuring economic growth and stability (Keynesian, 2012).” Basically, economists that believe in the Keynesian school of economics feel that spending, or investment by tax-cuts or an outright influx of cash, will create the same output in the economy as long as wages and price remain constant. This is considered to be a short-term solution to a recession or lull in the economy. Though not a Keynesian, Milton Friedman also agrees that wages and prices change very gradually and have limited flexibility in the short term (Blinder, 2012). Supply-side economics is considered to be a long term solution where decreases in marginal tax rates are said to create long term growth. The cuts give more expendable income that people and companies spend and lead to more employment. More employed people lead to a larger tax base and more revenue for the government. Further the ability to pay fewer taxes decreases the use of tax avoidance and keeps money in circulation (Gwartney, 2012). That being said, Keynes would have been a fan of the stimulus plan. He would have had the conclusion that the $800 billion would...
