Lux Rogers: A Short Story

“Mom?” My shoulders roll to ease the growing knot out of them. Pale skin over-top a narrow body. Icy like tile under my feet from the lack of heat in my cream bathroom. I twisted the copper knob on the heating spindle.

“Mom? Are you up yet?” Peeling back the shower curtain; I stopped. A cold chill rocketed down my spine one vertebrae at a time
An unwelcomed metallic taste on my tongue as I look over the once crystal clear blue liquid now a dark watered down red. A short, disemboweled woman lifelessly scrunched in an uncomfortable position. Her green eyes horridly visible through the water she submerged in. Bile arose my tightened throat. My mother’s tendons in her face descended to an unnatural extremity. Extraminds of her body floated …show more content…
“Ow crap.” I snarled at the tugging sensation on my scalp. Murky blue eyes staring back at me. Ugly. That’s all I could see through the bathroom mirror.

“Today marks the fifth year anniversary to the mysterious murder of Maria Rogers. Five years prior on this day, twenty six year old Maria Catherine Rogers, was found dead in her morning shower by her eleven year old daughter Lux Rogers.” I flicked off the radio. They didn’t know what happened so they have no right to talk about it.

Five years. Honestly it is weird to think about. Five years ago I sat in Ms. Feathers sixth grade class with Bill Nye the Science Guy blaring. I remember that day, the prying for answers, pictures of men I’ve never seen, interviews, police. The works. My aunt took custody of me because my deadbeat dad refused to take in a ‘beggar child’. Aunt Clare stays locked in her room most of the day so I have the house to myself. After my mother's death I found an odd infatuation with guns. I, in fact, own a nine millimeter pistol for protection. I staggered down the wooden stairs to the lazy boy couch set. My hand reaches for the black strap of my gray backpack with cheesy flowers stitched into the fabric. I threw it over my shoulder, fiddled on my converse high tops, and rushed into the brisk Washington

Blues vs. Country Music

...Blues vs Country music According to Etta James in an interview with American Chronicle: "The Blues and country are first cousins ... What I look for in a song is for the story to be for real. I like a blood and guts kind of thing. That's what you find in the lyrics of country music." Blues and country music both developed in the 19th century in the Southern United States. They share a similar history. For this reason, they share many of the same musical and lyrical characteristics. Read more: How to Compare Blues & Country Music | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how_5888119_compare-blues-country-music.htInstructions 1. * 1 Learn the history behind blues and country music. They are both forms of American folk music influenced by earlier styles brought overseas. Blues music grew out of field hollers and chants sung by African slaves. Irish and Scottish balladeers borrowed the guitar and banjo of blues and thus created "country". According to Reebee Garofalo in "Rockin' Out: Popular Music in the USA", "Terms like country and blues are only used to separate the same kind of music made by blacks and whites ... designations like race and hillbilly intentionally separated artists along racial lines and conveyed the impression that their music came from mutually exclusive sources." Country is an offshoot of blues. They are essentially the same thing. In the PBS special, "Rhythm, Country and Blues," country is referred to as "white man's blues." * 2 Listen to...

...80R 01mackenzie (ds) Page 349 Thursday, July 24, 2003 3:04 PM Economy and Society Volume 32 Number 3 August 2003: 349–380 Long-Term Capital Management and the sociology of arbitrage Donald MacKenzie Abstract Arbitrage is a key process in the practice of financial markets and in their theoretical depiction: it allows markets to be posited as efficient without all investors being assumed to be rational. This article explores the sociology of arbitrage by means of an examination of the arbitrageurs, Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM). LTCM’s 1998 crisis is analysed using both qualitative, interview-based data and quantitative examination of price movements. It is suggested that the roots of the crisis lay in an unstable pattern of imitation that had developed in the markets within which LTCM operated. As the resulting ‘superportfolio’ began to unravel, arbitrageurs other than LTCM fled the market, even as arbitrage opportunities became more attractive, causing huge price movements against LTCM. Three features of the sociology of arbitrage are discussed: its conduct by people often personally known to each other; the possibility and consequences of imitation; and the limits on the capacity of arbitrage to close price discrepancies. It is suggested that by 1998 imitative arbitrage formed a ‘global microstructure’ in the sense of Knorr Cetina and Bruegger. Keywords: arbitrage; economic sociology; imitation; Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM); globalization;...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...

Conclusion Afterword Author’s Note Acknowledgments Notes Foreword When a governor or any state official seeks elective national office, his (or her) reputation and what the country knows about the candidate’s background is initially determined by the work of local and regional media. Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade trying to find accurate information on Bush’s record in the Texas National Guard. My curiosity had been prompted by his failure to adequately answer a question I had asked him as a panelist in a televised debate with Ann Richards during the 1994 gubernatorial campaign. Eventually I published three books on Bush and his political consigliere, Karl Rove. During Bush’s presidency, many other...
