...smile Whispering to me, telling me you care when I know you don’t Crushing my inside by all the lies you told Lies lies and more lies I see you coming. I can smell you from a mile away, I know your enticing sweet scent because it’s something I use to wear. I used to hug and hold you, breathe you and feel you Your lying consumes me, it is now a part of me Those bitter-sweet lies on my tongue, leaves me so numb. Lies lies and more lies I’m young and confounded, still telling lies and just can’t rewind it. Just can’t stand it sometimes bursting to come out, clouding my vision with doubt. Lies lies and more lies Trust issues were the tissues he left behind. I know healing takes time and I’m fine with that, as a matter of fact, I can toast to that. Don’t cover me with a lie, it’s a blanket I don’t need. Lies lies and more lies We reap what we sow, trust me I should know. I told so many lies it’s now a constant shadow What began as one, turned into a few. Like a speeding train on an endless track, the first lie was impossible to retract. His lies caressed my mind, harden my heart, changed my soul, lying has taken its toll. Watch what you say and say what you mean. Lying has a need only the week can feed. Lies lies and more lies...

...taught that lying is wrong and hurts people including ourselves. Moreover, we also have educated that it is better to accept the consequences of any actions than to lie. However, the more they grow up, the more they know about using of lying because telling the truth cannot always solve the problem. From the point of view, some lying is acceptable, some is not. It depends upon what purposes that make people tell lies. The first point to note is that although telling lie is easy to get things in the short period of time, it will create a bad impression on the next generation as well as it does not give any benefit on long way. For example, if you tell some lies to the children such as smoking doesn't effect on everyone around, what will they learn in their future? It is dangerous for everyone too aware of wrong way because of adult. Another point they would like to mention is that if they always cheat others many times, one day lie will befall upon anyone and will lose prestige in relationships. The story telling about a shepherd rearing the sheep is typical example. It cheats villagers many times that there was wolf on the hill. When they run to save it but found no wolf, they became angry with it. And then when the wolf really came, no one bothered it. Finally, the wolf attacked it sheep and also killed the boy. It was due to the own sin that the boy got the kill. On the other hand, in some situations, telling the truth leads to more bad than good. So with this lying is used...

...In order for a speech to be effective, the speaker must use rhetorical devices that can grab an audience’s attention and help them remember the speech forever. Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, and Abraham Lincoln have made the most memorable speeches of all time because of the rhetorical devices they used. Reagan (“The Challenger”) used pathos, allusion, and parallelism. Kennedy (“Inaugural Address”) applied antithesis, parallelism, and anaphora. And Lincoln utilized allusion, anaphora, and epistrophe into his speech. Each of these speeches lasted anywhere from a minute to two hours. But in the end, length did not matter; the only thing that mattered is the rhetorical devices these president's used in order to get the nation to listen to them and therefore do what they are told. In Ronald Reagan’s “The Challenger” speech, he uses the rhetorical device pathos, or the appeal to emotion, in order to connect the pain that his family, the entire nation, and the families of those affected by the disaster were feeling. As WordPress.com said, “Reagan uses his delivery, use of dictation, and appeals to pathos to help attempt a nation to recover, eulogize seven men and women, and give a new home to the American people”. About his family and the entire nation, “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the Challenger[…]We know we share this pain with all of the people of our county.” (Reagan 1), and about the families of those in the disaster, “For the families of the seven,...

...The invention of Lying The Invention of Lying is set in a world in which human beings never evolved the ability to lie. Not only can they not lie, they feel themselves compelled to share their thoughts and feelings with often brutal honesty. They must reveal themselves; the filters of social convention simply do not exist. This movie is an excellent representation of the idea of deceptive communication. Considered the least successful screenwriter at Lecture Films, Mark Bellison is a self-described “chubby little loser.” He’s at the bottom rung of society, picked on, humiliated, and about to be fired from his job at any moment. On a date with Anna McDoogles, a well off executive who only agreed to go as a favor to a friend, he is ultimately rejected as a suitable partner because Anna doesn’t want her future children to carry Mark’s “snub-nosed” genetic material. Rejected by Anna, out of a job, and in danger of being evicted from his apartment, something changes within him. Some as yet untapped region of his brain suddenly fires and he gains the ability to lie. From here, the film follows Mark as he tries to turn his life around with lies and win the affection of Anna. Through the discovery of lying, we are able to see the concepts in chapter eleven brought to comedic life. The movie causes the audience to reflect on our own society and the reasons why people lie. This chapter in the book covers deceptive acts and why they occur. One explanation is that some lies help...

...Professor Sezonenko ENC 1102 12/9/2015 Lying for the Thrill Pathological lying is a controversial topic. It is debated if it should be classified as a symptom or a disease. Pathological lying is characterized by frequent and repeated lying for no apparent reason. Pathological liars have no motives for benefits from their behavior. Lying to hide something has more consequences behind it such as avoiding punishment. Everyone carries the trait of being untruthful to manipulate a situation. Pathological lying has a trait called Pseudologia Phantastica, which causes the person to believe their own lies. Pathological lying is becoming an epidemic, which is requiring a need for recognizing the problem, as being a pathological liar is a danger to one’s self or to others. There are several different kinds of liars: there are ordinary liars, compulsive liars, and pathological liars. An ordinary liar is the everyday person that tells a little white lie to avoid consequences or just to add exaggeration. For example, I asked my six year old brother, Isaiah, if he ate the doughnuts that I had in my room, and his immediate answer was no, even though I could see the white powder around his lips. Thinking he would get in trouble, Isaiah lied to avoid consequences. Compulsive liars are people who lie because it is a habit. They lie to avoid the truth, which may be uncomfortable to them. Low self-esteem is a big factor in being a compulsive liar. My cousin Cindy is an example of a compulsive...

...The Evil of Lying The Evil of Lying was written by Charles Fried and is a section from his book Right and Wrong. In The Evil of Lying, Fried argues that lying is always wrong even when it may have good results. Fired believes that lying is intentional and morally wrong even when the lie you have told turns out to be true. Lying, under any circumstance, is wrong as it fails to respect someone by not telling him or her the truth. A deontologist would be against lying because they believe that it is our sense of duty to not lie and always tell the truth. In order to be ethical, one must operate according to categorical imperatives. This means that lying is something that you are willing to universalize for example, if you lie then you must accept that everyone around you lies. Deontologists would also fid this difficult because although no one should lie, we cannot always refrain from lying all the time. “I do not necessarily do you harm at all by deed or word if I induce you to believe what is not in fact the case; I may even do you good, possibly by way, for example, of consolation or flattery.” This quote by G. J. Warnock is something that deontologists would not agree with because even though flattery may do someone good it is still considered lying. Deontologists believe that it is our duty to tell the truth regardless of whether it is doing someone good or harm. Consequentialists would be in favor of lying if it produced a good outcome. Consequentialists believe that...

...Goedjen 1 Jackson Goedjen Mrs. Zinsitz English II GT - 3 22 September 2014 Lying Saints Throughout history and across the world lies have been told, whether it be a simple “white” lie, or the largest lie ever told. Some philosophers even say it’s impossible for humans not to lie. A lie is a false statement made to deliberately deceive the person, or persons to which it is told. Lies and deception take common place in today’s society; An everyday necessity in order to keep society functioning at it’s fullest potential, yet people insist the benefits of lying such as protecting yourself, the nation, or a large number of people the cannot rectify immorality of the lie itself. We as a society lie or deceive generally to protect ourselves from a perceived threat. Oddly though, all of my life, I have been told “Lying is always wrong.” or “There is a never a right time to lie.” yet everybody still seems to participate in this social voodoo. Now of course, I do too, albeit with good intentions of course. For example, when I was much younger, a salesman came to my door. Being young and naive, I answered the door without thinking too much about it. I was home alone at the time and when the salesman asked if my parents were home I said yes, but were on the phone and couldn’t talk. The man looked shocked, and hurriedly left. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I now realize what consequences telling the truth could have held. I had to lie in that moment as it was for my own safety...

...Compulsive Lying Is your husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend a compulsive/pathological liar or a sociopath? To begin with, it may help to understand the difference between a pathological or compulsive liar and a sociopath (see, types of liars). Ultimately, making this type of distinction may not be that useful. Because in either case, the outcome is typically the same: dealing with a compulsive or pathological liar is very difficult to do. And unfortunately, sociopaths cannot be changed (see, lovefraud). A compulsive liar will resort to telling lies, regardless of the situation. Again, everyone lies from time to time (see, when lovers lie), but for a compulsive liar, telling lies is routine. It becomes a habit - a way of life. Simply put, for a compulsive liar, lying becomes second nature. Not only do compulsive liars bend the truth about issues large and small, they take comfort in it. Lying feels right to a compulsive liar. Telling the truth, on the other hand, is difficult and uncomfortable. And like any behavior which provides comfort and an escape from discomfort (i.e., alcohol, drugs, sex), lying can become addictive and hard to stop. For the compulsive liar, lying feels safe and this fuels the desire to lie even more. Making matters even more complicated, compulsive lying is often a symptom of a much larger personality disorder, which only makes the problem more difficult to resolve (see, narcissistic personality disorder and borderline...

...LYING?! FINAL ASSIGNMENT Lying is an interesting topic to discuss. It is a common wrong act that everybody does quite often in their lives regardless of good lies or bad lies. I’ve never spent times to think deeply about lying until I joined Business Ethics of my MBA program. What I remember most about lying from when I was a child is that lying is not always bad and if your lies do not leave bad consequences, and it does not harm anyone, then it is fine. Recently, I have done some research on articles about lies, and it changes my perception about lying. I found an interesting blog about “Categories of Lies - White Lies, Grey Lies, and Black Lies”, Truth Lies Deception and Coverups Blogger 2015 (TLDCB). So what is the definition of a lie? According to BBC – Ethic Guide, “lying is a form of deception, but not all forms of deception are lies.” I agree with this definition, not all forms of deception are lies, and all lies are not the same. To me, sometimes lying is appropriate and necessary in some circumstances. However, to have a better judgment of information receiving every day, we should constantly be concerned with all of our communication. The article I’ve read about categories of lies clearly defines “the major distinguishing factors between the major categories of lies are intent, consequence, and public acceptability”. I reckon those are undeniably correct. Before going to details of the analysis, from the article, we will look at the classification system of lying....

...Why or Why not is it acceptable to lie to children? By Gregory Bryant Most people when asked is it ok to lie to children would say, “of course, they don’t know the difference” and then leave it there. Think back to when you were a child and your parents told you that a man in a red suit named Santa Clause came down your chimney on Christmas and brought you presents if you were good. The agenda behind this lie was so that you would be good. Adults use lies for various reasons. Sometimes it’s so you don’t have to face consequences. Other times it’s to invoke a specific behavior. In the case of “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, lying to the children by telling “them they would see a light and something would happen to them inside wasn’t meant to be literal but was meant to evoke a response of willingness to come to God. Some parents feel that it’s not ok to lie to children. They believe a child should know truth as soon as they can distinguish right from wrong, good from bad, and fantasy from reality. This would bring the child into adulthood sooner and gives them a more realistic view of the world. In the case of Santa Clause, parents will tell their children that there is no Santa Clause, that its mommy and daddy who bring presents to you and that Christmas is not really about gifts as much as it is about the birth of Christ. Parents will save the child from seeing the holiday as a financial endeavor and see the holiday as a religious or spiritual holiday thus detaching the...

...Owen Lloyd Melanie Philipps EN 140 5 Aug 2011 The “Lawyers are Sharks” Delusion How can you tell when a lawyer is lying? His lips are moving. This joke, along with countless other short and witty jabs at lawyers, is sure to get a good laugh from a crowd. Comedians refer to jokes like these as “crowd pleasers”, mainly because the majority of people can relate or agree with it. The general public simply does not like lawyers. They tend to think of them as these greedy, devious, snake-like con artists that serve the rich and take advantage of the poor. Rarely will mainstream media or books try and make a case on behalf of the lawyers and argue that this stereotype is not true. Does this mean the negative image of the legal profession should be universally accepted as being accurate? Similar to the way our judicial system runs, it is necessary to properly examine both sides of this image to accurately determine if the stereotype of lawyers is true. After conducting some research and investigating both sides, it appears the bad public image lawyers are burdened with is not an accurate image at all. This claim can be proven by looking at how the stereotype actually came to be, and by looking at some of the popular claims people make against lawyers and explaining how they are wrong. Many people can agree that it only takes one bad experience to forever scar the way they feel or view that thing from then on. For instance, a child might see a clown performing at a birthday party...

...Damian Roberts ENGL 1013 24 June 2013 “Acting vs. Lying” “Acting is like lying. The art of lying well. I’m paid to tell elaborate lies.” – Mel Gibson. Everyone at least once in their life has been told, “Don’t lie,” or “lying will get you nowhere”. What about acting? Isn’t acting just another clever way to lie? Throughout my essay, I will tell about the differences and similarities that acting and lying share. Both the arts of acting and lying are trying to convince their audience by leading them into a trap of words. Both are devious and are tactics to impress or convince someone that something is true. An actor is a fantastic liar, while a liar is a fantastic actor. What that means is that they are both similar though the body language is not the same. People who act tend to lie for the sake of their character, but liars just lie for him or herself. In order to act one must act, speak, and think like their character would. However, a liar tries hard to be themselves, which accomplishes nothing. When an actor is trying to be a personality that is far from their own, people tend to catch on. They can see a twitching in the lips, looking secretly towards a script, or smiling at incorrect times. A liar would possibly hide behind hair, avoid eye contact, and make jokes to ease tension. How much time do you think an actor puts in for a great movie? This is the same as asking, how much time do liars put into their lies? When an actor receives a role in a big production or...

...When, If Ever is a Lie Morally Permissible? Peggy Scott Phil 6 Symbolic Logic Summer Session B August 21, 2001 Chapters directed to: 1,2 and 3; Pg. 39-42 Conflicts of Duty, 4,7,11 Conclusion, Augustine, Aquinas & Kant Lying to protect the anonymity of Alcoholics Anonymous members and their families helps them join the group, recover and chart a new course for their lives. The few occasional lies necessary to keep their affiliation with the group private are morally acceptable, because society is safer if these people are in AA than if they are not in AA. Alcoholics have very little chance of staying sober without AA, and they often do terrible things to anyone in their path when they are drunk. Anonymity encourages participation in AA for both new and continuing members, and fewer would join and stay sober if they had to bear the burden of public knowledge of their condition. As a matter of public policy, our communities are generally strong supporters of AA, providing meeting rooms, considerable goodwill and privacy for over fifty years now. AA and the public both benefit by every alcoholic who quits drinking, because a sober drunk is a safer drunk. When we look to the individual level, what's in the best interest of the public and what’s best for the sober alcoholic are often diametrically opposed. The legal, social and economic repercussions for having identified oneself as an alcoholic could be devastating to a sober alcoholic person if this information...

...Lying by omission occurs when the media is hushed and keeps news from the public, and this act happens in the daily lives of Americans. In the modern day, after the law has been enforced on a person, the case is brought to the American Court System. In this system, there are prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and a jury of the peers that work to serve a correct verdict. However, a fair trial does not often happen, especially in the police shooting trials. Therefore, the race of the police officer and the race of the victim creates different punishments during trials. To start off, it might seem that African Americans feel that they are treated inferior to Whites, so they might say that they are often singled out in criminal circumstances and trails even. Some might claim that America has not yet...
