The Lyon site has been occupied since prehistoric times and the first town dates Ancient Rome. A quote from the historian Fernand Braudel has the wealth and complexity of the history of Lyon:
"The fate of Lyon is not simpler than the river. Every city, no doubt, is to be complicated, Lyon more than another, that strikes the historian by his wealth, his sudden transformations, its originality or its strangeness. It is not the same from one century to the next century and more constrained than going willingly, she spends endless originality to another. It is, in itself, a difficult problem of the historian of France, perhaps the key issue, surely clef20 indicator. '
Prehistory and Antiquity [edit]
Main article: Lugdunum.

Model of Lugdunum, the former capital of the Gauls in the Musée Gallo-Roman Fourvière.
The Neolithic to the second Iron Age finds many different tracks habitat and objects of every kind attest the existence of a relay wine trade between the Mediterranean coast and the north (sixth century BC. AD). In the absence of more sophisticated artifacts, we can not at this time about the village or ville21. On the Fourvière hill, they found thousands of amphorae. It is possible that this is a place where the Gallic chiefs gathered to feast in honor of the god Lug.
Capital of the Gauls [edit]
Lucius Plancus Munatius based on the site a Roman colony under the name of Colonia Copia Felix Munatia Lugdunum in 43 BC. BC. The beginnings of the colony are poorly understood. It is not fitted with wall, at most a berm surrounding ditches and palisades with the image of romains22 camps. But the city of earth and wood gives way to building the foundations masonry pierres23. The growth of the city is fast due to its highly strategic location. The name of the city evolve in Colonia Copia Lugdunum. In 27 BC. BC, General Agrippa, son and minister of Augustus divided Gaul. Lugdunum became the capital of the province of Gaul Lyon and the seat of imperial power in the three provinces of Gaul, and became the Caput Galliarum, "Capital of the Gauls". From 19 BC. BC, Augustus is developing the urban network, which hosts four lanes open through Gaul from Lugdunum24. The city with the advent of various successive emperors, will expand, enrich and beautify themselves. Two Roman emperors were born in Lyon: Claude, born in 10 BC. BC and Caracalla, born in 186. In 64, the notables of Lugdunum aware of the fire that ravaged Rome, and send four million sesterces aid for reconstruction. The following year, at 65, Lugdunum was the victim of a terrible fire, Nero is in turn donated four million sesterces for his reconstruction25 Lugdunum.
Lugdunum key position at the confluence of the Arar (Saône) and Rhodanus (Rhone), makes it an important river port. It is also a first-class road junction, connected both to Rome from the south of Gaul (Narbonne), the Rhone valley and Marseille, and secondly to Aquitaine and Brittany, the valley of the Seine and the port of Boulogne, link to the island of Britain, it allows access to the Rhine, the Doubs valley or via Helvetie to take the border (the "limes") against Germania, then it will be directly linked to Italy by the valleys of the Alps, after the submission of Alpine tribes still independent. This dual position puts Lugdunum in touch all of Gaul north and west with the rest of the Empire. Its status as a Roman colony granted by the Senate and the role of capital of the Gauls promote the growth of the city.
Under the Flavian (69 to 96), then under the Antonines (96 to 192), Lugdunum prosperous, and knows peace like the Roman world. Its population is estimated at between 50 000 and 80 000 habitants26, making it one of the largest cities of Gaul with Narbo Martius (Narbonne). The city is spread on four areas particularly delineated: the upper town (where was founded the original colony), the village Celtic Condate the Canabae and the right bank of the Saone River, below the upper town. The cemeteries are located along the access roads to the city.
Decline [edit]
Under Severus (193-235), at the time of the conviction of the Christian Martyrs (177), the city will begin to decline, mainly because of the imperial succession disputes. Clodius Albinus, a pretender to the throne moved to Lugdunum to the late second century and face wait for Severus. He was defeated at the Battle of Lugdunum and Severus plundering cité27.
At the end of the third century during the reorganization of the Tetrarchy, Lugdunum lost its status as the capital of the Gauls in 297 in favor of Trier, closer to the Rhine frontier. Lugdunum is only the administrative seat of the small province of First Lyonnaise (Lyon, Burgundy and Franche-Comté).
In the early years of the fourth century, the city lost its water supply due to the looting of lead pipes for aqueducts, which can not be replaced by local authorities défaillantes28. This results in a displacement of the population, leaving the tray Fourvière to take refuge near fleuve29.
Late antiquity Lyon is announced by the installation of Burgundian tribes people in Sapaudie as federated by the Roman general Aetius, after the destruction of their kingdom near the Rhine. They create a new realm, independent of the Roman Empire deliquescent, and incorporate in Lyon, they are one of their capitale30.
Christianity [edit]
The first implementations of Christianity in Gaul are known to us by a letter transcribed by Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History. She used to date the establishment of Christianity in the city in the middle of the second century. Lyon is a favorable place for the arrival of its central location in the common European exchange and the high proportion of foreign traveling and settling in the city. During the first time (until the third century), Lyon seems to be the only city to have a Gallic évêque31.
The best-known episode of the Christianization of the martyrs is 177. Described by the letter of St. Irenaeus recovery by Eusèce of Caesarea, it shows the dead Saint Pothinus and Sainte Blandine, among others.
It was during the fourth century that the city closes its pagan temples and reorganizing social life around its bishop and the calendar of the Church. Lyon became one of the intellectual centers of Christianity, illustrated by the fifth century Sidonius Apollinaire32.
Middle Ages [edit]

The Choir adjoining the cathedral is built in the eleventh century.
Lyon, during the Middle Ages, became a city of average importance, far from the centers of power, major trade and is not implied by the major conflicts in the great powers.
Topographic and demographic history [edit]
Throughout the first half of the Middle Ages, Lyon is folded on both banks of the Saône. The fifth to the tenth century, sources and archaeological studies fail to accurately describe the city, but there seems to have little changes, no scale civil constructions and some new facilities religieux33.
With the turn of the millennium, the city starts to grow Rhone. Eleventh and twelfth century castle construction dating Peter Scize and the wall that surrounds the canonical neighborhood of Saint-Jean. In civil matters, the first stone bridge in Lyon, the Saone, is built at the place du Change and completed in the year 107034. In the religious sphere, Lyon heavily renovated many churches: that of the Ile Barbe, Ainay, for example. Saint-Just was completely rebuilt near the old location. The site is the most important, however, that of the Saint Jean cathedral, begun by Archbishop Guichard Pontigny from the 1170s, and continues the centuries suivants35.
The thirteenth to the fifteenth century, the urban transformations remain modest. The city is growing very slowly, continuing the work undertaken previously. The big news is the end of the twelfth century the construction of a wooden bridge over the Rhône36. To replace it, a second side is built of stone, which consumes considerable work is completed and fortunes at the end of the fourteenth siècle37 38. At the end of the Middle Ages, new builders are the mendicant orders, who settled in the city, especially near its periphery. In the religious sphere, a number of churches were renovated this church Saint-Nizier, whose bell tower north welcomes the belfry.

The city is home to the Carolingian renaissance, spurred on by his archbishop Leidrade (friend of Alcuin), the deacon Florus, then Agobard of Lyon42. After the Treaty of Verdun and the succession of Charlemagne, the city comes with the kingdom of Burgundy Lothaire, like the rest of the eastern shore of the Saône43. However located far from the centers of power, its religious leaders are quite independent of the various powers that exist nominally above, while still under the influence of different forms of the kingdom of Bourgogne44. The ninth and tenth centuries, raiding and looting that shook the surrounding regions (the Normans back the Rhone, and in 911, the Hungarians ravage Burgundy), do not seem to reach Lyon45.

Facade of the Cathedral of St. John
The city has some influence on the religious level. The archbishop of Lyon is elevated to Primate of Gaul by Pope Gregory VII from 1078, although the distinction is largely ceremonial. They get the charter in 1320 called the "Sabaudine", which establishes their autonomy and control of cité50. The bourgeois have achieved after decades of struggle and with the support of King Philip IV of France, which includes permanently Lyon in his kingdom in 131 251.

They also influence the architecture, because they need parts more than 4 meters ceiling to accommodate their looms. From this time many buildings are Renaissance, showcasing the wealth of a city that reached a European scale.

The slopes of Fourvière and Croix-Rousse are unbuildable because it is land belonging to the Church, and the left bank is also in the vast majority (except suburb of Guillotière) because it is located in a flood zone (Brotteaux). This is what explains the propensity of buildings in Lyon time to gain height.
Two people will put plans in place to expand the Pharaonic city of Lyon. Morand, first of all, provides a dry part of the marsh on the left bank and subdivide the land following a grid pattern. It connects the new district to the Peninsula by a bridge, the bridge Morand. The second project is the Perrache, which plans to double the size of the peninsula extending south. After absence from office for the subsequent political term, he again held the office of the chief executive from the year 1935 till 1948. Best described politically as a Liberal, he has had twenty-two years’ worth of experience in public office and is recognized as the premier having served the longest term in the history of the country. Taught and trained in social work and as a lawyer, he displayed a strong curiosity towards the condition of humans, ultimately playing a key part in establishing the groundwork for turning Canada into a welfare state (Welfare State, The Canadian Encyclopedia). As stated by historians and his personal biographers, Mackenzie was short of the emblematic personal qualities of prodigious frontrunners, particularly when compared with the likes of Charles de Gaulle of France, Winston Churchill and Margret Thatcher of England, Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States of America or even lesser known personalities like Joey Smallwood of Newfoundland – the masses were not enthralled by him. He did not possess a forceful presence or a charismatic personality. He lacked the necessary rhetorical talent and failed to stand out on the media of his time...

Ireanus and Gregory

...Irenaeus of Lyon and Gregory of Nyssa make use of Scripture in their presentations with the use of and the reference of the likeness of God. How man was created out of the likeness of God. Irenaeus of Lyon talks about the perfection of God and how …”God was not born and always remains the same, he can do anything, as far as depends on himself.” (Irenaeus of Lyon pg. 23) God created things to be lesser than him and how everything needs to have a beginning to learn and grow. God could have created things to be perfect but he needed people to figure things out for themselves to raise a true heart to then be blessed and receive God upon death. Irenaeus of Lyon uses good and evil as references in his presentation and how everything is born with the understanding of good and evil and need to be tempted by this evil to find a true good. “By grasping the nature of what is opposed to the sweet and good, it will never again try to taste disobedience to God.” (Irenaeus of Lyon pg. 27) Gregory also uses the true of heart from scripture for his presentation over and over again; “Blessed are the pure at heart, for they shall see God.” (Gregory of Nyssa pg. 29) He references the apostles and how they say “for no one can see God and live” (Gregory of Nyssa pg. 29) How there is a promised blessedness throughout both presentations through the discovery of self and awareness of self. Wisdom is big in the presentation of Gregory of Nyssa. “It is possible, through the wisdom perceptible in...

Lyons Case Study

...Basic Rules for Kickball 1. Pitching: Each team will pitch to the other team. Pitchers must pitch from the pitching mound and cannot go in front of plate until the ball is kicked. Slow to moderate pitches only... If the kicker requests a slower pitch then the pitcher is obligated to do so. The pitcher should try his/her best to give the kicker a pitch that they feel most comfortable kicking. 2. Kicking: All kicks must be made by foot. A kicker can be called out if they get 3 strikes or 4 foul balls. A play ends when the pitcher has control of the ball and is near the mound/pitching circle. Any runner who interferes with the ball on its way back to the pitcher will be called out. 3. You may decide at the beginning of the game that players may or may not bunt. 4. The ball can be thrown at any player and must hit shoulder and below. The runner will be called safe if it hits their head unless they are sliding/ducking the ball. If a player is hit in the head they get the base they are running to. .No leading off or stealing is allowed. A runner off his/her base when the ball is kicked is out. 5. Liar's Poker

...Liar’s Poker Like many college graduates in recent years, Michael Lewis aimed at a career in investment banking. Unlike most of the others, Lewis did not take either himself or his ambitions with full seriousness. He majored in art history rather than economics at Yale; and, far from pursuing a career in the bond market with tenacity, he received his job as the result of an accidental meeting during a London dinner. The dinner in question, which Lewis describes with a sharp eye for the ridiculous, was one for the Queen Mother Elizabeth. Lewis found that his job at Salomon Brothers was paradoxical. On the one hand, as an analyst, he was the lowest of the low and often functioned as an errand boy for more senior members of the firm. On the other hand, he had the power to engage in trades that involved millions of dollars. The training program at Salomon Brothers was reputed to be the best in the world and virtually guaranteed its graduates a successful career in the market. Further, the lucrative bonuses available to the analysts meant that men (and a few women) in their mid-twenties might earn several hundred thousand dollars a year. Lewis soon discovered that the job contained many drawbacks. The workload was intense, and many of the analysts developed odd quirks, such as eating binges, as a result of stress. Competition led to frequent attempts to hijack the deals made by others. A veteran of business infighting deprived Lewis of the credit due to him for his most successful...

Labour

...The importance of the Labour movement in Nova Scotia Canadians have experienced low wages, unsafe working conditions and just not having any rights in the workplace. The Toronto Typographical Union went on strike in 1872, which led to the legalization of unions and it gave us the national holiday know as Labour Day. In the 1900’s the Federal Department of Labour was established. The first Minister of Labour, William Lyon Mackenzie King was responsible for making decisions and to know what was going on in each department. Growing up as an African Canadian Black student, I have heard a about a lot of History about Unions and discriminations in the Black communities. Black Canadians have fought hard to have equal rights in the workforce, with having equal pay and having the same opportunities as what their co-workers have. When we talk about racism in the workplace, discrimination of blacks cannot be ignored. Racism is alive and well in Canada, but it is not openly discussed and kept subtle. When we look at the census of Black Canadians, they are more likely to be unemployed, as well as not being paid the same amount of money than the average Canadian would be paid. Black Canadians were not allowed to join unions for almost 70 years after the first Canadian Union was established. Today we now have unions that keep us safe in the workplace, give us equal or fair pay, regardless of what race you are. Now if any of our members experience discrimination in the workplace...

The Civil War: A Confederate Catechism By Lyon Tyler

...After reading his article, I feel as if, it is honest and valid. The next source I referred to in order to formulate my own opinion on the war was “A Confederate Catechism” by Lyon Tyler in 1929. The first thing that he addresses is what the cause of secession was in the war. He explains that there were many breaking points in the United States at the time. First, it was mainly due to differences between the Union and the South which is always going to be the main cause. However, he lists a few more breaking points that made the war occur. The first incident was almost reached in 1785 when the North tried to give away the Mississippi to Spain. The second was in 1801 when Aaron Burr became president due to the immoral act of turning the presidential ticket upside-down. The third was in 1833 when there was an imposed high protective tariff put on the south that benefited northern manufactures. Lastly, the breaking point was reached when 1861when abuse of the south exceeded and a ‘strictly northern’ president was elected by northern voters. This is what caused the southerners to question their Constitutional rights. Tyler claims that at the time there was no ‘real’ peace and that southerners had no choice but to secede because they didn’t want to suffer from strife or war. Within the document written by Lyon Tyler, he answers many questions that address the issue of slavery within the war. The first question he answers is the mainstream question “Was slavery the cause of the secession...

Reflection Paper 5

...Friendships and close relationships are something that influences people to the extent that it leaves an impact in their lives. It is something that can influence a person in both negative and positive ways. Things like friendship, relationships, love has no barrier, all it needs is a nurturing and a valued perspective. It can work wonders in people’s life or partner’s life or someone who you are nurturing it with. As quoted by Epicurus, the famous ancient Greek philosopher, “You don’t develop courage by being happy in your relationships every day. You develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.” This quote completely throws light on the King’s struggle in order to gain that courage and then overcoming his lifelong huddle. “The King’s speech,” is an Oscar-winning film, which truly touches the deepest part of our hearts. It was released in 2010, rated R and directed by Tom Hooper. It is a biopic story about Britain’s king George VI Albert (played by Colin Firth) and his lifelong struggle to overcome his Speech impediment or if to be precise his stammering. He was suffering from the stammer since the age of 4 or 5. The movie opens with Prince Albert, known as “Bertie” to his wife and family, who was later known as king George VI, the second son of King George V, speaking at the close of the 1925 British Empire Exhibition with his wife Elizabeth (played by Helena Bonham Carter) next to him. Queen Elizabeth

...Queen Elizabeth Throughout history, men are seen as powerful, strong identities and leaders, very few women have made their mark as an influential being; however, Queen Elizabeth is known as one of the most influential and powerful women in history because of her strong character and leadership and her ability to connect with her audience. In1588 England was caught under a major rivalry with Spain. Queen Elizabeth decided to present a very powerful speech to her troops on the battlefield, with the soul purpose to give them hope and to strengthen their British patriotism. The subject of her speech was to ensure her people that she would not give up on them and would, “…live or die amongst [them].” The powerful message was executed with an informal and motherly tone. Many techniques and certain characteristics helped construct this speech that managed to give courage to thousand of troops. One of the most important techniques that Queen Elizabeth uses in her speech is her swift code switching. Her tone is informal and very colloquial, establishing a strong connection between her and her troops. Her use of language gave a sense of equality and unity. She establishes trust between her audience when she repeatedly uses “we” instead of “you” or “me”, sounding compassionate and selfless, “…but I assure you, I do not desire to live to distrust my faith and loving people”. Using Ethos Queen Elizabeth manages to create a strong confident character, one that the audience will easily...
