important to me. I hypothesized that becoming an MFT would always keep me interested in my work, allow me to constantly be socializing with people, and try and help as many people as possible. I thought about how I would want to work with all different types of families. However, one main thing that I considered specializing in is, families dealing with addictions. I felt that I am experienced in this topic considering my first hand experience with my own parents and their substance abuse.
I have always hoped to have a career where I want to wake up every day looking forward to my work, and to me the way to make that happen, is by becoming a MFT. My father threatens to take me out of his will and give all of his inheritance to my brother if I marry a black man. This shows how he is trying to impact the conflict using his money as his power. However, my beliefs and values cannot be bought.
Racial ethnicity beliefs is the issue within this conflict culture. My family comes from a white, upper-middle class family. My father will always associate black people into a lower class system and view them as minorities, no matter how financially well of the person is. He will always be racist towards people from a black culture and will never classify them as an equal to himself or white people.
My conflict culture of dealing with a racist father impacts me becoming a competent and effective therapist with conflictual couples by learning that people will have their own perspectives on things and I most likely won’t be able to change them.
