Social media, instant communication and instant access to information pose serious obstacles to a person’s ability to self reflect and think seriously as depicted in M.T. Anderson’s novel Feed. Through his characters, the issue repeatedly surfaced that their lack of awareness of the outside world and their ability to seriously reflect on the negative impact that has on their personal lives. It appears by cutting down on the reliance of technology (for example: spending less time on the “feed”), having real face to face conversations, and taking the time to be present in what is going on in the news and with environmental issues, people can practice serious reflection in our always connected and instantaneous world.
In the story, all of the characters seem to be engrossed in the feed, which is basically the internet but inside of your head. Everyone ranging from Titus’s younger brother smell factor to his dad are connected in it. This causes issues because it creates a dependence on the feed, meaning the characters can’t create actual relationships with each other because they are always too busy with other things to have face to face interactions.
