Environment issues

1) what are the corporate responsibility and sustainability issues faced by M&S?
- I have defined corporate responsibility
- I have said that it (corporate responsibility) can be affected socially e.g. charity events and used examples in Plan A that M&S have done
- I have then defined sustainability, and I have gone onto talking about environmentalism and the risks of waste and global warming followed by what M&S have done in plan A in relation to this

Virtue Aristotle- often easy for us to assess. Have to see what is generally accepted as being the right thing for a person/retail organisation. Limitations are that a society at any particular time mat not have a clear picture itself of what is right (and proper) and what is wrong. Times in the past where societies have accepted and encouraged practices we would now regard as very wrong. Its easy to find out what is right and proper now – only have to look at the law or newspapers or look at guidance given by international authorities, but society can have a mistaken view.

Duty ethics Immanuel kant – what matters is the motive. The idea of doing the right thing because it is a duty or a principle. Motive of ethical behaviour being the thing that mattered. Why were you doing it? Were you doing it purely because it is right? A duty or a principle. If you were doing a good thing for another reason, because you were trying to be nice or kind, sympathetic or felt sorry for them. This would not be the right thing. It is only right if you are doing it from duty or principle. It was a categorical imperative if done right, ie. It was an absolue ethical must do at all times. Way to

Analysis of Mash

...MASH The first thing I noticed was the awesome theme music. I remember seeing reruns of M*A*S*H as a kid and turning the channel immediately because the opening theme made it sound like a drama and not something funny. So when the lyrics of the song are sung at the beginning of the film it catches me off guard. “Suicide is painless”, is one of the stupidest lyrics I think I've ever heard but I think that was the point of director Robert Altman. I later did some research and found out the song was written by the director's 14 year old son. Something else I noticed right off the bat was how familiar a lot of the faces were but I couldn't put a name on any of them until the credits rolled, Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, and Robert Duvall being the most familiar. Up until a few years ago I had no idea M*A*S*H was a movie before it was a show. So when we were assigned the film I had expectations of seeing some of the cast members of the series. Apparently I was wrong because I didn't see any whatsoever. From what I've read, the show is based on the movie, and the movie is based on the book so all the characters are exactly the same. I have to say this. Hawkeye and Trapper John are now two of my favorite movie characters of all time. Sutherland and Gould played their respective parts so nonchalantly that you forget they're both actually trained surgeons in the middle of a very bloody war. I have to admit the zaniness of the film touched a bit too close to something I would...

...All in the Family a show which aired from 1971-1983 was one of the most important and influential series that aired during the time frame mentioned above. This show did not shy away from addressing controversial or socially relevant issues. MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) aired from 1972-1983, this show was revolved around the 4077th MASH which was one of the surgical units stationed in Korea during the Korean War (1950-1953). The staff of a Korean War field hospital used humor to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war. The issues that All in the Family addressed were religious, political, social and personal issues. Archie Bunker one of the main characters, was better known as a bigot, a prejudice blue collar backlasher against liberal and permissive values. He treated his wife Edith with no respect, always argued wit his daughter, and verbally assaulted his son-in-law. MASH addressed political and social issues. This show was mostly liberal and this show often criticized politicians who mired the United States in Vietnam (Davidson, Delay, Heyrman, Lytle, & Stoff pg. 932). Both All in the Family and MASH were condemned by the religious right because they believed that shows played a major role in corrupting the family values. Religious right considered the shows of the 1970s to being permissive, having positive portrayal of unmarried women, premarital sex along with drug use, profanity, homosexuality, nudity, violence and prejudices. The religious right was...

...when lide has rerely benn tougher for manufacturers in the developed world, miele’s strategy for survival is to break almost all the rules. The german company, a global leader in high-quality domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacum cleaners, is renowned for its exavting manufacturing standards and its refusal to move down-market and compete on price. Miele bases nearly all its manufacturing in high-cost Germany and is self-sufficient to a high degree. Rather than outsource to low-cost supliers, it makes 4m electric motors ayear (enough for all its products) in its own plant near cologne. Which it says is essential to maintain its quality standards. Sales last year werw E2.2bn (L1.5bn) The approach commands respect among miele,s industry peers. ‘it is the Rolls-Royece of the industry, with a fantastic position at the top end,’ says Andrea Guerra, chief executive of Merloni, the italian white goods maker. But the domestiic appliance sector is one of europe’s most competitive and inevitably questions are being asked about how long miele can stick to what many see as its old-dashioned ways, before succumbing to lower-costt rivals. In fact, whether miele survives in its current form over the next decade will be an important test case for the whole of european manufacturing. The company sells appliances ranging from dishwashers to coffee machines, most commanding a price premium of up to 70 per cent over the competitors’ wares. It spends 12 per cent of its revenue on...

...Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) beneficial to a company’s performance? CSR—A double-edged sword for company’s performance Starting from the refined corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies issued by the European Commission in 2011, a stinging debate is being aroused on the influence of CSR to the whole society. The most influential critic is Noble Prize winner Milton Friedman, who regards CSR as a waste of stockholders’ money (1970). However, many other articles claim, opposite Friedman, that CSR actually improves companies’ financial performance in the long run (Bagnoli and Watts, 2003; McWilliams and Siegel, 2001). There are plenty of arguments on CSR’s influence on company’s performance. As far as I am concerned, CSR plays as a double-edged sword in company performance. The definition of CSR is quite easy to understand. According to Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), CSR is defined as “achieving commercial success in ways that honor ethical values and respect people, communities, and the natural environment.” McWilliams and Siegel (2001:117) describe CSR as “actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interest of the firm and that which is required by law.” These suggest that a socially responsible corporation should take a step forward and adopt strategies and business practices that go beyond the profit requirements and contribute to some social-friendly activities. However, when companies choose to engage in CSR activities, what they are...

...Journal of Economics, Business and Management, Vol. 1, No. 1, February 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility to Reflect Organization‟s Corporate Identity: A Content Analysis Musdiana Mohamad Salleh, Nabsiah Abdul Wahid, and Malliga Marimuthu  Abstract—The authors propose corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a useful element in reflecting an organization’s corporate identity (CI) to its target audiences. Introduction Nowadays many authors declare Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in strategic terms as it is no longer seen as the invention of some social activist but important source of competitive advantage. However various researchers still struggle to figure out what shape and utility should the tools of CSR have and what implementation model could be the best to fulfill the business objectives. The study aims to demonstrate whether Trompenaars bipolar model of organizational culture could prove useful while implementing CSR strategy and to propose some good practice in this case. 2.
