...production-oriented strategy lead M&S to gain immense market share and strong brand loyalty however, this could only take them so far. In a market place where retailers were moving to a more consumer-oriented strategy, M&S struggled. Unable to provide fashion conscious clothing that the younger consumers desired, it lost significant market share and became known only for its good underwear and clothing targeted at older conservative women (Flynn, 1998). Today the company is trying to vigorously recapture their market by being more consumer-oriented and aware of their competition. They are taking measures to understand and listen to what their customers want and also to realize that the customer has evolved from when they started out in the industry. They have put in place several new strategies to appeal to the new consumer. From campaigns with noted celebrities, to striving to be the world’s first GREEN retailer, supplying fair trade products and being the conscious Corporate Social Responsible Company (Corporate.Marks and Spencer, 2011). M&S was recently ranked 5th in the top 10 UK retailers for 2010-2011 (Retail week, 2011) and acknowledged as a “top family brand” for 2011 by ad agency Isobel and Yougov (Baker & Costa, 2011). This is an exciting time for the M&S marketing team as they strive to appeal to new segments while ensuring that they do not alienate their current base of loyal customers. As this report will show, the current core M&S consumers are affluent...

...Freedom Riders John Smith HIS/145 September 17, 2014 Freedom Riders Journal entry December 12th 1961: It has been difficult living in the era that we do. Being an African American in Alabama is not the life I had envisioned for myself. The benefit of going to college, which is handed to white people, is often unobtainable for the black person. I have always known I was destined to do something more with my life. The Jim Crowe laws constantly remind me that I am not an equal to those around me. Last year 1960, the Supreme Court ruled that those very laws are illegal. Shortly after those rulings my sister took part in a sit-in at a drug store, which led to that store changing its policy. Later she met Ella Baker an SCLC activist and was invited to a conference at Shaw University in Raleigh in April 1960. That conference led to the creation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. That committee took nonviolent actions ever more forward by organizing freedom rides. This was a direct challenge of segregation on interstate busses as the Constitution protected interstate commerce. Inspired by my sister’s actions I have made up my mind to join those people. To stand up and stand out in order to see that discrimination comes to an end. There are some 400 freedom riders putting the Supreme Court ruling to the test. We often go in inter-racial teams from somewhere North in to the Segregated South. Essentially backed by Boynton v. Virginia, (1960) ruling that segregation...

...John Smith C257 Task 1 Data aggregation as it pertains to healthcare is the collection of health data from individual health records that are then grouped into a collective database that can be further analyzed and used for research. This data does not identify individual patients, but instead focuses on groups of patients which are then used for research purposes such as finding linking factors that could be the cause of certain illnesses. Also by having multiple sources for this data allows more statistical validity when determining these factors. Data aggregation is not only beneficial in this aspect, but can also be used to improve consumer transparency by allowing patients access to provider quality evaluations through multiple different sources. Although data aggregation can be beneficial for future and present healthcare issues, it is not without its faults. For instance in order to have a truly unified database, it would take multiple companies and industries working together to make this happen. Also at this point the suspicion about data aggregation and how it will ultimately be used is still an issue. In an article by Regan and Randall-Lewis (2008) there is a question posed “Is data being used to either reform the healthcare system or “out think” your rivals?” which asks whether this data will be used to find health trends that will lead to the betterment of society’s healthcare or the financial gain of a company. Lastly the security risks involved with having...

...What Do Faculty Need? Academic Library Resources and Services That Increase Research Productivity1 Ethelene Whitmire Abstract This paper describes a theoretical model of the relationship between faculty research productivity and academic library resources and services and a proposed empirical study that will reveal which academic library resources and services contribute to increased faculty research productivity. Introduction According to the latest available figures from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Academic Library Survey (ALS), during the fiscal year 1998 the 3,658 academic libraries in the United States spent a total of $4.6 billion dollars on operating expenditures, held a total of 878.9 million volumes in their collections, and had 175.4 million circulation transactions (U.S. Department of Education, 2001). What is the impact of these figures on faculty research productivity? Higher education institutions have to make decisions about the allocation of limited funds among a number of programs. ...Name: Instructor: Course: Date: American Civil Rights Movement Introduction The American Civil Rights Movement was a mass protest movement which was against discrimination and racial segregation in southern United States. The American Civil Rights Movement came into national prominence during the period of mid-1950s. The roots of this movement can be traced to the era of African slaves where their descendants started resisting racial oppression and they also advocated for the abolishment of slavery. This effectively led to the American slaves being emancipated due to the Civil War and they were also granted vital civil rights. These civil rights were granted during the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth amendments were done to the US Constitution. There were also continued struggles during the following century to effectively secure federal protection in regard to the granted rights (Green and Harold, 03). These struggles used various ways to express what they actually wanted by use of nonviolent protests. It was during the periods of between the 1950s and the 1960s when the civil rights movements attained the abolishment of race discrimination in public facilities in the south that they were more motivated to continue with their struggles. This was a breakthrough since they had achieved the equal-rights legislation basically for the African Americans. This was a humongous achievement since the 1865-1877 periods that was referred to as the Reconstruction period. The passage...

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is perhaps the most versatile electro-analytical technique for the study of electroactive species. Its versatility dined with ease of measurement has resulted in extensive use of CV in the fields of electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. Cyclic voltammetry is often the first experiment performed in an electrochemical study of a compound, biological material, or an electrode surface. The effectiveness of CV results from its capability for rapidly observing the redox behavior over a wide potential range. The resulting voltammogram is analogous to a conventional spectrum in that it conveys information as a function of an energy scan. Instrumentation: The main components of a Cyclic Voltammeter are the Reference electrode...

...Human Resource Management Review 16 (2006) 139 – 154 www.socscinet.com/bam/humres Talent management: A critical review Robert E. Lewis ⁎, Robert J. Heckman Personnel Decisions International, USA Abstract If the volume of literature in the popular and practitioner press is any guide, practitioners in the field of human resources are now primarily in the business of talent management. But what is talent management and what basis does it have in scientific principles of human resources and management? In this paper we address this question by reviewing problems with the definition of talent management and the lack of data supporting many practitioner claims. We then outline research that supports a systemsoriented definition of talent management that focuses on the strategic management of talent. We then outline future avenues of research to further develop the field of talent management and tie it more closely to the large volume of work in strategic human resources management. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Keywords: Talent management; Strategic Human resources; Organization A casual review of the trade and popular literature on the topic of “talent management” (TM) would certainly lead one to conclude it is a popular and growing field. A search on the phrase “talent management hr” in late 2004 using a popular internet search engine yielded over 2,700,000 hits. One year later a search on the same term yielded over 8 million hits. ...advertising in enhancing unaided recall was found to persist over a one-week delay. Creativity is arguably a very important component of advertising. Advertising agencies pride themselves on industry awards, which are often focused more on the creativity of the advertising than brand performance. Past research on the topic has ranged from focusing on formulaic scales of creativity (e.g., Barron 1988; Kneller 1965; White and Smith 2001) to discussing creative strategy in holistic terms (e.g.. Bell 1992; Blasko and Mokwa 1986). A small number of empirical studies of creative advertising have been completed (e.g., Ang and Low 2000; Kover, Goldberg, and James 1995; Kover, James, and Sonner 1997; Pieters, Warlop, and Wedel 2002; Stone, Besser, and Lewis 2000; White and Smith 2001), but the studies, while individually interesting, taken as a whole, have not portrayed a particularly cohesive or comprehensive understanding of creative advertising.
