Dakota Gailey, a student at Manson Northwest Webster, says, “Having a study hall would be nice so I could work on my classes, but I do survive without one, since I have not had one throughout my high school years.” Study halls have helped some students, but have hindered others. Over the years, Manson Northwest Webster (MNW) has had a problem with disruptive students who do not pay attention and do not do their work. Teachers at MNW have narrowed the biggest reason for this down to students in study halls. A few years ago in the 2013-14 school year the MNW study hall policy allowed students as many study halls in their schedule as they wanted according to the graduation progress and grades, however, the school board and faculty decided to change…show more content… The current requirement to graduate at MNW is 8 credits of Language Arts, 6 Math Credits, 6 Science credits, 6 Social Science credits, 4 Physical Education credits, 1 Health credit, 1 Leadership credit, and 20 Elective credits for a total of 52 credits (“Academics”). On average, to achieve 52 credits it takes a student at MNW four years to graduate. By not allowing study halls, students could take more classes to earn more credits and focus more on their classes which could lead to graduation sooner. The author Robby Timmler who is a staff writer for the Slinger High School states, “Taking out study halls could also allow for more room for curricular credits, so then students can graduate earlier and go into college or start their career earlier than before.” Teachers at MNW have noticed the students who are not focusing in class and their homework, teachers have tried to solve this problem by giving out bad grades but this has not worked and should be changed to a more abrupt way that will gain the students attention by taking away study halls for students to slack off in. Allowing students to focus and graduating sooner is not the only reason study halls should be taken away from students, students are also being disruptive in study hall and not getting their work…show more content… Students are currently sitting in study hall playing cards, talking loudly, and walking the halls instead of working on their homework quietly. Some students walk the hallways being loud, which causes a distraction to the students who are trying to focus on their classes. Kelli Girard, the MNW Study Hall Teacher, says, “Only about 5% of the students in study hall actually do their work, because they are lazy and rather walk around and talk instead of working.” Many students in study hall waste their time. If students are not working on their classes, then why do they deserve a study hall to mess around in and cause chaos? Also, students are loud in study hall which in turn could lead to conflict between students. Kelli Girard also says, “The worst thing to ever happen in a study hall that I remember was a fist fight, because two students who were picking on each other which ended with injuries and wounds to both the students.” Students are not just disruptive to other students, but also cause serious injury. Students waste their time with other activities such as technology. The Staff ED at website The Charger state, “Whether it’s iPad games, Netflix movies or just a 50 minute nap, study hall has become less work and more play.” Students are just wasting their time by watching movies, playing games, and sleeping instead of being productive and working on
