Unity is represented as a very significant part in Rachel Perkin's film Mabo and without unity the Mabo land rights case may never have succeeded; however, there are scenes where unity is forgotten. The most crucial display of unity is the unity between Eddie and Bonita and the continual support from Netta shown in numerous ways throughout the fillm. Another example is the unity amongst Eddie and his legal team as well as the Passi brothers because without them, Eddie would not have the same confidence. Nevertheless, a lack of unity is demonstrated in his argument with Netta and the physical abuse that followed.

The most important demonstration of unity is depicted through the relationship Eddie has with Netta. The pair supports each other and this is shown through the active reminders from Netta reassuring him that his battle is respectable and that she is proud of him, ultimately giving him the will to continue with his case. Without the support from Netta, Eddie May never have been able to achieve what he had, such as the connection with his family and the land claim of Murray Island. Another example includes job resignation; Netta was unhappy at first but eventually accepts it and soon shows her support. Additionally, Netta threatens to leave him at one point, but she quickly forgives him and this shows that she is a strong woman and to allow her husband to reach his full potential and achieve his dreams was a respectable move. He admits this when he confesses to Netta telling her how he "wishes he was home more" for his family. If there wasn't unity between the pair and Netta was not supportive of Mabo, the story would have been very different.

The unity Eddie has with his legal team is crucial to the court case because without it, Eddie would not have had the same confidence and motivation to pursue the case to the High Court and succeed. The devotedness becomes more prominent at the loss of the first case. They had the choice to disband and abandon the case as they had no more available funds it; however, after the call with Ron, they agreed to unite to fight the Terra Nullius case. Also the reuniting of Mabo and the Passi brothers shows a sense of connection back to Murray Island. Additionally, without the Passi brothers reuniting on the case, Eddie would not have been able to achieve his goals. Without unity, his legal battle for his land rights would not have been achievable.

A lack of unity is depicted in the scene where Eddie physically abuses Netta. It represents a physical and metal division between the pair and as a result of this, Netta leaves him for a few days, which further emphasises the lack of unity. Additionally, Eddie focuses more on his legal battle than his family and this is evident as Eddie's daughter steps in to defend Netta. This symbolises that the Mabo family is united without Eddie. Another example is Eddie's refusal to admit his wrong doings and tells his family that he will "do that to the lot" of them if it could "earn him a bit of respect", showing that he is not connected with his family.

Ultimately, unity is very important in the film Mabo and without it, the Mabo case would never have been so successful; however, Eddie's violence towards shows great opposition. Furthermore, unification is greatly demonstrated and emphasised.
