Beth Revis an American author once said, "Power isn't control at all – power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own." Throughout the entirety of the play The Tragedy of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare characteristics of a good leader are portrayed through one character while on the contrary bad leadership qualities are possessed by another. Duncan, the original king prior to Macbeth, is generous and helpful while Macbeth is the total opposite ruling out of fear and having the quality of betrayal. Both Macbeth and Duncan had opportunities as king to showcase …show more content…
In the beginning of the play, the scene opens with King Duncan receiving the news on the murder of his enemy. When the captain recounts to the king the glorious slew of the traitor was committed by Macbeth he orders Macbeth be brought to the castle so he can thank him in person for his actions. Duncan helps whoever helps him and portrays the characteristic of kindness. Upon entering Duncan addresses Macbeth with the words, "I have begun to plant thee and will labor to make thee full of growing"(I.iv.28-29). Whoever supports the king is always given the same respect back. The king intends to make Macbeth greater meanwhile Macbeth only intends to kill him. Where Duncan flourishes with love and respect Macbeth hid any qualities of respect and love for his people. When Macbeth took the throne he often ruled out of fear. Towards the end of the play when the army was coming to kill him a messenger came to deliver the news that Burhan wood was moving. Already past a normal physiological state his response was, "If thou speak'st false upon the next tree shalt thou half alive till famine cling thee" (V.vii.39-41). The messenger was only doing his job but Macbeth did not want to hear it. When he threatens to hang a man alive he demonstrates the awful qualities he possesses and how his leadership style is not what is deemed as …show more content…
As stated prior, Duncan was generous and helpful while Macbeth cared solely for power. After receiving the news about becoming Thane of Cawdor, King Duncan asked to be a guest for the night at the castle of Macbeth. Upon arrival Banquo stated, "He hath been in unusual pleasure and set forth great largess to your offices: this diamond he greets your wife withal"(II.i.12-15). King Duncan shows his gratitude to his supporters by brining Macbeth's wife and all their servants gifts to pay his respects. On the contrary, when Macbeth was planning the death of Banquo he hired murders and stated to them, "Both of you know Banquo was your enemy"(III.i.114). This shows the ruthlessness and betrayal attributes in Macbeth. He convinced murderers who never know Banquo and was once the greatest friend of Macbeth that he was the enemy and was not to be

Patrick Mahomes Research Paper

...How often do you think about the different qualities of a leader? Many different qualities make a good leader. Both Patrick Mahomes, an NFL quarterback, and MacDuff, a character from Shakespeare's Macbeth, are excellent examples of leaders. Mahomes led with commitment, while MacDuff led with determination. To demonstrate, Patrick Mahomes is a great example of a real-life leader because he has commitment to the game and his whole team. Mahomes has, “That joy and loyalty drive his work ethic and the hours of practice and studying he puts in to be the best he can be. Macbeth

...March 2015 Macbeth is written during the reigning of king James I. A time when a man was expected to be strong, brave, gallant and the head of his home. A lady was to be found weak, waiting for her husbands next command. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth do not fit into their stereotype or gender roles, they display characters of role reversal. Macbeth is the opposing stereotype of what a man should be. In this time period men where known for their strengths, bravery, greediness and sometimes murder. To the public and his friends Macbeth seemed to be a man in control of his wife and household but behind closed doors he was all the characteristics a man should not be. Macbeth displayed characteristics more suitable for a woman such as; self doubt, worried, fear and guilt. “I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on’t again I dare not” (Macbeth Act II, Scene II page 35). Macbeth is persuaded by his wife to kill Duncan even when he objects and has doubts. In the beginning of the play Macbeth allows his wife to make the majority of their decisions. Who he should kill and what guest they invite to the party in order for him to become king. This shows his character to be weak and void of leadership. Stereotypical when you hear the name Lady Macbeth you think etiquette, elegance, meekness, soft spoken and gentle. Lady Macbeth is quite the opposite. Her characteristics in the play are empowering, greedy, fearless, evil and murderous. Not only does Lady Macbeth display characters...

Character Is Defined by Behaviour

...but choose not to behave in a violent way. They may have mean thoughts but choose to act with kindness. This suggests that how we choose to act defines character. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a dramatic demonstration that proves it is not one's secret thoughts that determine character; it is one's behaviour. If a person submits to their thoughts then they can be destroyed. A person’s actions can have a negative impact ultimately leading to their demise. Macbeth is a character who validates this statement: he has a shallow persona and he is ambitious. However, he has few redeeming qualities to back him up: at the beginning he is portrayed as a heroic man which makes his decline so tragic. Macbeth is also easily manipulated. Macbeth’s character is defined by his negative behaviour which eventually results in his downfall; he acts on his insecurities and his ambition in a violent and ruthless way and chooses to abandon his morals. Many people in life do not have the ability to look beneath the surface of a situation: they have a shallow mindset which affects their ability to see the bigger picture. The character Macbeth is one of these people; he rarely considers the “bigger picture” when dealing with a complicated situation. When the witches reveal, “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (I, i, 70), Macbeth is threatened by the prospect of Banquo’s bloodline gaining power: When first they [witches] put the name of king upon me And bade them speak to him. Then, prophet-like...

Macbeth is different as we have the character of Macbeth who isn’t clear cut as good or evil, throughout the novel his character slowly decays into a villain. In Macbeth, the first time being switched from the shadowy world of witches to the physical world of battle we are presented with the characters of Ross and the Captain. Gender Roles In Macbeth

...Macbeth and Gender John J. Armes, M.Ed. Ashford University June 4, 2018 Dominance; This theme occurs in so many of William Shakespeare’s plays because it is vital to the creation of conflict within a storyline. The Plot of Macbeth would have never advanced if the foresight given by the witches did not make Macbeth willing to take power away from Duncan and become king himself. Many of Shakespeare’s female characters have also been willing to obtain power; however, achieving power was not as easy as it was for men. Women were not put into leadership roles as easily as men were; they had to seek them out. Lady Macbeth from Macbeth is a the perfect example of a woman who took action to control her own life and the lives of those around...

Comparative Essay: Lotf and Macbeth

...without sin. Sin, like adulthood or corruption, then enters into the group and the group is destroyed. The political structure the boys establish when they first meet on the island is also destroyed in the process. The group descends into chaos, with Simon and Piggy as casualties. In the end, Jack, the primary exponent of sin, burns down the island while hunting Ralph, which allows for the boys’ rescue. Despite being rescued, it was clear the boys were changed forever. Likewise, in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), the country of Scotland is portrayed to be organized under the order of a higher being; a king. When Macbeth, a highly regarded thane, is tempted by a prophecy of being king, he acts on his temptation. Macbeth then becomes king but this damages the political structure because of how Macbeth rules. As Macbeth continues down his path of bloodshed, he disrupts and destroys Scotland’s moral centre but he also destroys the view of how an ideal king would be. In the end, Macbeth and his wife receive just punishments. Both of these texts are allegorical. An allegory is a work, typically art work, used to reveal a hidden...

Products Liability

...Corporate Governance Professor Lynn Macbeth June 2, 2012 Products Liability Introduction As consumers, we purchase products that we feel are beneficial to us in some way or another. The products that we decide and choose to purchase are solely up to the individual. If there is a problem or accident that may occur a result with use of that product, then the consumer is liable. But producers and manufacturers are not exempt being that it is there product, and this is where legal liability issues occur. “Product liability refers to the responsibility of manufacturers for injuries and damages caused by their products” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, pg. 52). In this paper, I will examine the Toyota Motor Company and how this company has been the subject of a product liability lawsuit. First, I describe the company and the product safety issue that led to the lawsuit. Next, I will discuss the legal theories used by the plaintiff to recover in this lawsuit, how the lawsuit was resolved, and why I agree with the decision in the case. Then, it will be relevant to mention the changes that have taken place in the company to ensure greater safety of this product or its products, including specific policies that the company has put in place to protect consumers and end users who purchase and use its product. Is Julius Caesar a Tyrant?

...because of his unconstitutional usurpation of power?  William Shakespeare’s well-renowned play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, has led to centuries of controversial debate on the validity of tyrannicide based on his depiction of Julius Caesar. Some scholars have argued that Shakespeare intended to portray Caesar as a tyrant, while others believe he is acting as a just King. On one hand, it is difficult to assume that Shakespeare plainly viewed Caesar as a tyrant, especially since Shakespeare deliberately left Caesar’s actions and intentions ambiguous, making him into a less obvious tyrannical figure compared to Plutarch’s representation of Caesar. In addition, Shakespeare does not solidify Caesar as a tyrant in the same way he does with Macbeth and Richard III in their respective plays. On the other hand, it is difficult to reason that Caesar is a just King because he came into power by usurpation. “In antiquity the term [“tyrant”] referred to a ruler who came to power by usurpation, without constitutional warrant.” Based on insight from several sources and my own interpretation of Julius Caesar, I have concluded that Shakespeare left Caesar’s objectives unknown in order to focus on the moral dilemma faced by Brutus, but Shakespeare still intended to depict Caesar as a tyrant who deserved to be deposed because of his unconstitutional usurpation of power. In order to prove this I will evaluate the political turmoil during the Elizabethan era in an attempt to understand Shakespeare’s...

The Life of Tennessee Williams

...Tennessee Williams: 20th century Playwright (March 26, 1911 – February 25, 1983) Origins & family: • Tennessee Williams, real name Thomas Lanier Williams III, was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1911, in the home of his maternal grandfather who was the local episcopal rector. At age three his family had moved to Mississippi, and then aged 7 they moved to St. Louis, Missouri. • His father, Cornelius Williams, was a travelling salesman and grew increasingly abusive as Tennessee and his siblings grew older. His father also favoured Tennessee’s brother over him. His mother, Edwina Williams, was a typical ‘Southern Belle’ who tended to be ‘snobby’ towards those who, she felt, were below her. Her behaviour was known to be neurotic and hysterical which could be the reason for the type of characters included in Tennessee’s writing. She was a descendant of a genteel southern family which resulted in her ‘snobbish’ attitudes. • By the mid 30’s his father’s alcoholism and abusive temper led to the separation of his father and mother, although they never divorced. In 1939 the man then known as Thomas Lanier Williams III, changed his name to Tennessee Williams, whether it be a nickname or from an extract from Williams, no one seems to know. His education: • Between 1929 and 1931, he attended the University of Missouri, in Columbia, where studied to become a journalist. However he found these classes tedious and boring. Tennessee was also distracted by his unrequited love...

Lastly a two page description is given on what steps needs to be taken in order to arrive at the desirable state, followed by a conclusion which wraps up the discussion. * Self-Assessment It is said that a person’s perception of his abilities have consequences for his actions. If Shakespeare had a low self-belief, nobody would have come to know Macbeth. According to Ehrlinger and Dunning, as cited by Martinez and Swank (2003) one possible reason why women avoid career in science is that they underestimate their scientific reasoning ability. What is Self – Assessment? Self-Assessment acts as a powerful mechanism which allows an individual to look at their own performance, form conclusions about performance levels and act on those to create a development plan. Before any individual or organization try to develop a plan for performance improvement, it is first critical to draw a picture of the current performance.
