...“So foul and fair a day I have not seen” (1.3.39). These were Macbeth’s first words in this play. Macbeth was oblivious that this was the beginning of his tragedy. A tragedy he could have avoided. How could he? He was given a glance of the future and now he craves for more. The seed of darkness that the witches planted in him started to grow slowly. No! He wasn’t going to let anything intervene with fate. Hence he had to make sure the witches’ predictions will come true, though only what he want it to come true. Macbeth had his ear sweetened by the witches. The prophecy of him becoming the thane of Cawdor and king sounded very good for him and his wife’s aspirations. He had to believe them since he did become the thane of Cawdor. Unfortunately, his fall starts when he contemplates killing Duncan, the King. Macbeth starts an inner fight between wrong and good. In my opinion Lady Macbeth I the intellectual author of Duncan’s crime while Macbeth is only the material author. Lady Macbeth planed the crime, which make this crime a premeditated one. Lady Macbeth is a controversial character and in my opinion a key piece in this play. Many would argue that Macbeth was a good man that was push by his dreadful wife. However I believe that Lady Macbeth did what she believed she had to do to fulfill her avarice. As per Tillyard in The Elizabethan World Picture he explains the following “The conception of world order was for the Elizabethans a principal ...

...production. This is one of the points that the director of the 1983 Macbeth, should’ve been aware of. One version of the play, Macbeth, was directed by Jack Gold in 1983. It was the BBC Drama TV special. The director was in charge of the Shakespeare series and everyone was waiting for Macbeth. Although they were a little behind schedule, the play made into a TV series finally aired. It is very hard to find. Macbeth is a play about Macbeth’s journey to the throne. He found out that he would be king by a prophecy told by 3 witches. In the beginning of the play Macbeth is with Banquo, they tell him that Macbeth would be made thane of Cador, and at later time, he will be King of Scotland. The witches also say that Banquo would be in line for the throne, but would not be king of Scotland. The story continues and it shows how Macbeth goes crazy to get to the throne. There are many deaths and tragedies that occur. But Macbeth always asks the three witches, what will happen. This version of the play, Macbeth, wasn’t lived up to its expectation. There are many parts of the movie where it didn’t match the story. The acting was a little awkward. There were scenes where Macbeth speaks his thoughts, and it looked like he was trying to make a joke. There are many instances where the language was a little difficult to understand. There isn’t any way that the director tried to help the audience, those who didn’t read Macbeth, understand what was going on. In other to...

...Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” Theatre Review. There are many who do not know the famous tale of ‘Macbeth’ by the literacy mastermind, William Shakespeare. For those few who are not familiar with the story, it is one of pride, fate, deception and treachery. Macbeth, who returns from battle is confronted by three witches who have foreseen that he will become King of Scotland. The present king of Scotland, Duncan decides he will confer the title of the traitorous Cawdor on the heroic Macbeth. Macbeth makes the decision to murder Duncan, unaware of Duncan’s plan, and thus claims the throne for himself, placing the blame on the King’s guards. What follows can only be described as madness, as Macbeth and his wife become consumed with guilt, leading Macbeth on a road to insanity, which ends in a violent spectacle… I became excited to see this adaptation of Macbeth, as I had seen from its advertising was a darker and more modern take on the original play, after seeing a flyer featuring on it three hooded figures in a graffiti filled subway. Upon further inspection of the flyer I read that this production was described as a “darker, modern take on the Shakespearian story with darkly comic elements.” Well, as soon as I arrived in the lyric theatre and took my seat, I could definitely see I was in for a ‘darker’ version of the story by just looking at the greyish monotone set, resembling the inside of a castle on its ground floor, then just above it was an angled stage, giving the impression...

...The Tragedy of Macbeth implements the idea of kings ruling by divine right. Shakespeare limits the belief of divine right by presenting the character of Macbeth as a traitor and supports it by giving his intemperate ambition a consequence. From Princesses to Kings, any person emerged in royalty entails a divine source of power. In Shakespeare's day and age, whether known for their tyranny or their loyalty, Kings and Queens were always the most authoritative and idolized figures. Shakespeare Shakespeare provides his writing with an efficient amount of historical context; his opinions on the Gunpowder Plot, Great Chain of Being, supernatural powers and witches all hold a substantial amount of importance in Macbeth. This play, written during...

...meaning to it. I chose Shakespeare’s Macbeth because it shows a lot of different elements and gives a great understanding. Shakespeare’s Macbeth expresses a lot about humanity and about the human experience. The story has so much meaning to it, and for you to understand it you have to really analyze and dig deeper into this story. People seem to take reading this story into a whole different perspective. Even though the story may show different negative sides to humans you have to really understand the story to say this. Shakespeare is a very influential poet he persuades and explains to the readers a lot of different things in his poems and short stories. Shakespeare is basically in this story telling humans to be aware of their surroundings because you never know when something my go bad. While on the other hand Macbeth’s themes and other literary elements usually talks about the disaster of something or just tragedy. In my opinion, his whole story would be considered as a tragedy. In this play it shows a lot of drama and gives off a fiery but attractive tome that draws the reader into the theme in the play. Shakespeare’s is known as the encyclopedia of humanities as they examine the most realistic and controversial issues of human nature. Shakespeare’s describes Macbeth’s inhumanity and human nature, which continually struggles against the evils in his soul. “To be or not to be” is about the choices we make in our everyday lives. I think Macbeth sometimes shows the negative side...

...Macbeth is great play written by William Shakespeare, mostly known for its violence. The story starts with a hero of scotland, named Macbeth, whom changes gradually throughout the play. The thought of being able to have so much power caused him to make some menacing decisions that caused only chaos and regret. Towards the end his whole ambition for becoming king all fall short and instead he becomes an oppressor or tyrant. In William Shakespeare`s play, ambition has brought the death of many from Macbeth. “our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us; and true progress is to know more, be more, and do more”.In the play, Shakespeare uses the concept of ambition to show how it affects Macbeth and his wife who thrive to reach the throne and will go through any means necessary to achieve that goal. Ambition starts when Macbeth meets three witches, who tell him his destiny as king. He then becomes obsessed with the idea of having all that power and fame. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth turn away from being honorable people to turning into murderous tyrants. He is so preoccupied with becoming king he favors power over anything, such as honor, respect, and other things knights favor, so in effect there have been countless murders and the merciless killing of innocent bystanders and witnesses. His ambition, in my opinion, is to blame for duncan's murder. Macbeth even accuses duncans kids of killing their father. The desire for power fogs macbeth's mind...

...William Shakespeare and Graham Greene both present characters as being both heroes and villains in the tale of the tragedy of Macbeth and the short novel of The Destructors. Greene portrays ordinary people who have both the capacity of good and evil. Macbeth is different as we have the character of Macbeth who isn’t clear cut as good or evil, throughout the novel his character slowly decays into a villain. In Macbeth, the first time being switched from the shadowy world of witches to the physical world of battle we are presented with the characters of Ross and the Captain. Shakespeare uses these characters as devices to provide us with an insight into the character of Macbeth heroism. The Captain, covered in blood describes Macbeth as being...

...In life we all experience a form of tragedy, drama, romance, comedy and the little quirks that makes life what it truly is, Amazing! All of these things happen in a blink of an eye allowing us to feel and express or hide emotions that we can or can't explain. Poems in my opinion are thoughts or inspired ideas written in artistic form. Poems express life's moments or ones vision on a subject matter, whether descriptive or metaphorical. They can be romantic, melancholy, comedic, dark, or simply that piece of motivation to get one to the next moment. Making one feel that feeling that they haven't felt in a long time or be that perfect expression of words to portray ones mental or emotional state during a moment in time. This paper is to respond to the poem given in this weeks readings of which we are to analyze it's elements, form, language, etc in order reveal whether ones a skeptic or a true lover of the written word. Depending on the poem it can be of such memorable legendary words as of the words of William Shakespeare’s “Shall I compare thee to a summers day?” which has been used in countless movies, proposals, and pick up lines. However, those words of that simple phrase could have been taken into many factions of the question. A summers day can be that of beauty with the sun shining upon ones face and the ocean waves crashing against your feet or birds singing a romantic rhapsody of which brings a euphoric peace about oneself while in that moment. Although, the other side...

...Macbeth is a play written for James I after the death of Queen Elizabeth. James was intrigued with witchcraft and the love of Scotland. In order to understand Shakespeare's Macbeth you have to understand the time and historical period which it is set. This is the Elizabethan period which is the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century when there was an authoritarian government. In this era the monarchy ruled the governments, they needed to raise strong and loyal armies to protect and rule their counties. Shakespeare chose legends and events in Scottish history to dramatise Macbeth, which he uses from the "Holinshed's chronicles around 1050 AD", that he alters and manipulates these freely to portray Macbeth's loyalty and then his destruction...

...center of the rectangle rests a bean-shaped oblong, jutting out like a flaccid balloon. It’s a fetus, one may think, or a bladder...but what is the point of the piece? The exact purpose of the art piece, the meaning or explanation is not written there plainly. To understand a piece of art like this, one must engage in their own interpretation. Some people appreciate art because they consider it beautiful; some consider it pointless; some consider art necessary to society, and many refrain from further evaluation of art. In his essay “Art for Art’s Sake,” E.M. Forster explores precisely what this essay title proclaims. Forster acknowledges his argument is an “unpopular” one, but strives to ratify some misconceptions about art for art’s sake. In my initial reading of the essay I am not exempt from resisting the idea of art for art’s sake. Immediately, the notion seems to say that art can have no effect on society, and be appreciated nonetheless. I would like to believe, as a green and optimistic young artist, that art should and does have a purpose in society, and Forster’s support of art for art’s sake seems frivolous and occasionally slightly pretentious. To explain why art is in fact eternal, according to Forster, he writes that art has “internal order,” a unique quality that allows the significance of an art piece to last even as time goes...

How am I supposed to learn how to be a man if he’s always fighting and waiting to die for the king. Mother tries to help but she has her own responsibilities to take care of. The son of a great and loyal fighter, (chuckle) If only those qualities reflect through him being a father. ...Frankenstein and in the Play Macbeth, ambition is the main theme in these two pieces. Both Victor and Macbeth had great dreams of accomplishing certain things that defy a higher order. Ambition drove both of them to strive for what they want and never give up on their dreams. Ambition without doubt help or even single handling brought Macbeth and Victor to their dreams. Ambition is the best quality that a person can have, it allowed Victor and Macbeth to achieve what they always wanted. Whatever can bring you to the top, also has the power to make you fall harder then you fell before, being overly ambitious can also destroy a person and people that surrounds this individual. Victor and Macbeth succeeded in accomplishing their deepest desire but this does not mean they have succeeded in achieving happiness. Everyone dreams about achieving goals and dreams in life that is nearly impossible to grasp due to certain circumstances. Why do some individuals still try in chasing their dreams even though they know that the chances of succeeding are very slim? In the novel Frankenstein and the play Macbeth, Victor and Macbeth had dreams of achieving goals that defy a high order which promises server consequences. Victor and Macbeth are examples of the individual that were driven by ambition, this ambition was so strong and relentless that it actually allowed both Victor and Macbeth achieved their impossible dreams. In Victor’s case he succeeded in creating life and Macbeth succeeded in becoming...

...status quo, while still requiring ideas to be translated and conveyed by means of structured ‘discourse practices’ (Cherryholmes: 1988). Finally, upon examining the aforementioned approaches to EAP by review of scholarly literature, I intend to argue affirmatively that vulgar-pragmatic based pedagogy is the best and most effective method of teaching EAP to university students. The concept of critical pedagogical learning relies on the principle that ‘the classroom needs to be continually interrogated for the ideologies it fosters and reproduces’ (McLaren: 2011). This means that ‘criticalists’ (those who support a critical approach) prefer a system of education that challenges students to think beyond what is taught and form their own opinions; to broaden their thoughts and to construct their own voice (Palmer, Emmon: 2004). ...[pic] When Duncan the Meek reigned King of Scotland, there lived a great thane, or lord, called Macbeth. This Macbeth was a near kinsman to the king, and in great esteem at court for his valour and conduct in the wars; an example of which he had lately given, in defeating a rebel army assisted by the troops of Norway in terrible numbers. The two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo, returning victorious from this great battle, their way lay over a blasted heath, where they were stopped by the strange appearance of three figures like women, except that they had beards, and their withered skins and wild attire made them look not like any earthly creatures. Macbeth first addressed them, when they, seemingly offended, laid each one her choppy finger upon her skinny lips, in token of silence; and the first of them saluted Macbeth with the title of thane of Glamis. The general was not a little startled to find himself known by such creatures; but how much more, when the second of them followed up that salute by giving him the title of thane of Cawdor, to which honour he had no pretensions; and again the third bid him "All hail! king that shalt be hereafter!" Such a prophetic greeting might well amaze him, who knew that while the king's sons lived he could not hope to succeed to the throne. Then turning to Banquo, they pronounced him, in a sort of riddling terms, to be lesser than Macbeth and greater! not so happy, but much happier! and prophesied that though he should never reign,...

REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth 2 INTRODUCTION William Shakespeare developed many stories into excellent dramatizations for the Elizabethan stage. Shakespeare knew how to entertain and involve an audience with fast-paced plots, creative imagery, and multi-faceted characters. Macbeth is an action-packed, psychological thriller that has not lost its impact in nearly four hundred years. The politically ambitious character of Macbeth is as timely today as he was to Shakespeare's audience. Mary McCarthy says in her essay about Macbeth, "It is a troubling thought that Macbeth, of all Shakespeare's characters, should seem the most 'modern,' the only one you could transpose into contemporary battle dress or a sport shirt and slacks." (Signet Classic Macbeth) Audiences today quickly become interested in the plot of a blindly ambitious general with a strong-willed wife who must try to cope with the guilt engendered by their murder of an innocent king in order to further their power. The elements of superstition, ghosts, and witchcraft, though more readily a part of everyday life for the Renaissance audience, remain intriguing to modern teenagers. The action-packed...
