A person’s accomplishments are as bright as the stars, and those same accomplishments help launch others forward as they reach for their own. While it is easy to pick any glistening, gleaming, glowing star in the sky, choosing the star of someone who looks like you, acts like you, and relates to you has a greater impact on the individual. Mae C.Jemison, an African American female astronaut of many accomplishments, is a notable symbol of success with many stars in the sky. She is truly a hero I aspire to be due to her unbroken dedication in both her aspirations and society. Jemison’s compassion for others and her series of accomplishments heed to no end like the neverending void of space. While many people have either graduated from Samford or Cornell, won Essence awards, started their own organizations to help others, or even explored space, Jemison is special in that she not only excelled in all these events but also continued to rift through the boundaries of achievement. Although Jemson left the astronaut corps in March 1993, that did not stop her from venturing to other fields and discovering ways to help others. She was the first African American female to ever launch into space, and her journey to get there was not without racial and sex discrimination. Despite the obstructions, Jemison made it into orbit. Later on in life she told Scholastic in an interview that “[You] don't accept other people's limitations as being reality.” The power of this quote is immeasurable, and serves as a reminder that the only one with control over your aspirations is
