Maggie Lauterer was the first woman to run for Congress in the 11th district of North Carolina, she was a 7th generation Appalachian who was born and raised where she lived. She was on the campaign trail promoting herself and talking with people to show she cares about them. She was a Democrat but was moderate on things like abortion and gun laws. She however did not want a consultant telling her what to say and do. She wanted to listen to the people, and she did not want to run a negative campaign. When she got stressed out she sang Amazing Grace, so it would calm her. She did go to college, but she felt as though people seen her differently than her own people saw her.
Maggie had to fundraise 4,000 dollars a day to keep on the campaign trail, this was humiliating to her because she did not want to beg for money. When Charles Taylor, an incumbent, resorted to dirty tactics like Slander and libel, Maggie let the Christian coalition direct her agenda, which is called agenda setting. She quickly learned that politics is a dirty game but refused to fight dirty, Taylor however did everything he could to take down the outsider. Taylor however had a different agenda he rousted up some of his supporters to congratulate the VP on the things he did. She became a tougher version of herself; she did seem to take notice of the hecklers in the crowd. The day of the election the Democrats started to vote Republican; this was bad news for Maggie.
