...21 September 2012 Mike Hagerty Hagerty’s publishing 242 Publisher Lane Blue Springs, Mo, 64015 Dear Mr. Hagerty, As a proud citizen of my community, I believe that there are heroes amongst us all and they are just hiding behind their true self. The reason is that they are too scared to stand up for what they believe in or what they believe needs to be done, in order to create unity. And, that is why I am writing the publisher because I want to try and convince our community that heroes are all around the world and show their powers in different ways. Ohhh… and I’m not talking about NO ordinary superheroes that have all these magical powers; I’m talking about the heroes that simple just uses pure wisdom to influence the ones around them. This story will show the world that there are heroes out there in all different shapes and sizes. And, as far as the story goes, here are the ideas behind my story, so here we go: Way up high in the majestical forests, in the mountain of Emei, in China lives the Somaki people, who had the most inspirational/wise man that ever set foot on the lands called Mr. Morrison. For the people call their village the Spiritual Oracle because of Mr. Morrison; who takes on the form of a monk because of his vibrant white beard and bald head, the fact that he wears glasses and is as short (5’2 to be exact), his face looks as though it is wrinkled in certain areas giving him the effect of audacity allowing him to have the appearance of wisdom...

...Explore how the fiftieth gate and one other related text of your own choosing represent history and memory in unique and evocative ways. The interplay of history and memory combine to provide greater insight into events. Through the manipulation of textual forms and features, Mark Bakerʼs hybrid text “The Fiftieth Gate” expands and humanizes oneʼs understanding of the Holocaust in unique and evocative ways. A unique feature of the text is clever fusion between personal accounts and documented history using mediums such as, interviews, official documents, poetry and song. This enhances the stories of the authorʼs parents, Yossl and Genia, whilst evocatively capturing the atrocities of the Holocaust. The relationship between history and memory is further explored in Kevin Ruddʼs “Sorry apology to Stolen Generations”. Bakerʼs “The Fiftieth Gate” suggests that memory humanises historical events, juxtaposed by the emotionless discourse of history in unique and evocative ways. Baker provides insight into the historical events associated with the Holocaust, emphasising number of deaths that occurred during the genocide. In Gate 26, Baker explores the deaths Geniaʼs parents witnessed in the lines, “Among 1380 people, one family survived by chance. They were Leo Krochmal and his wife Rosa who witnessed the shooting,” The impersonal tone and simple language in the lines underscores the straightforward and detached nature of history. In contrast, the recount of Genia hiding...

... From 1450 to 1750, witch hunts were rampant around areas in Europe that were already ravaged by conflict. Witch hunts were roused by paranoia among both the layman and the religious authorities alike. The typically uneducated layman were easy prey for an intense paranoia and needed an outlet to blame. Sommerville, a modern historian, wrote a paper for other historians with a more neutral viewpoint than the fearful people of the past, detailing how women reaching for power was seen as evil and that was a part of how they were associated with witchcraft (Source 1). At the time, women were often treated as if they were a part of a lower class to be subjugated, and like when any member of a lower group tries to ascend to a higher one, they were typically disliked and distrusted, to the point of being considered evil. Joseph Klait, a historian, detailed how witches were blamed for any difficulties between husband and wife (Source 2). The need to blame a supernatural force for relationship difficulties, believing someone is out to get them and strain their relationship. Thomas Ady, a man living during the witch hunts spoke about the feeling of the average man at the time, spoke about how a person must be a witch after they denied helping a person and then strange things happened to him (Source 4). Ady denied aiding a person, and then something out of the ordinary happened, so he thought it was some sort of retribution from the person he denied, showing how paranoid he was. Fulbecke...

...Malia knew the scene all to well, it was etched in her memory like a scar upon skin. It left a horrible gory mark where happiness once dwelled. Anything she did could ever change or rescue what this moment had taken from her. Malia wallowed in her own pain, it was what she deserved right? She begged the still corpse of her brother to wake, but as always nothing ever happened. Silly foolish girl, no one's faith could bring him back. She rocked him, tears running down her cheeks. Tracing the well worn lines they had left there countless times before. Malia had relented to being stuck there, her soul simply trapped by the pain when suddenly a voice broke through. She blinked and slowly looked up, the red of her brothers blood a stark contrast to her now pale skin. "You...you set the nightmares free." she accused in a broken voice as Dominic reached for her. Malia struggled at first, desperate to hang onto her little brother, 'I can't leave him again, I can't...Pl..." she spoke as her legs felt to weak to hold her up and her body pressed against Dominic's as the scene shifted and her brother vanished from her sight. The dream shifted and changed, swirling around them with colors she couldn't even name anymore. She wanted to run, but before Malia could act Dominic grabbed her hand and pulled her close. Her hand once again came to rest palms pressed against his chest as she tried to push him away. Only this time he was stronger, to strong for her to push away, to strong for her...

... Its 1692 Salem, Massachusetts your neighbors are dwindling one by one. Extreme fear is in your heart, will I be next, will it be my wife, friend, preacher etc., who condemn me as a witch? That is what a witch-hunt feels like. Witch-hunts are designed to strike fear in your heart, to make you comply, to make you theirs. They are what one reverts to when they don’t want to own up to what they have done or have know idea how to explain what just really happened. In the case of Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans this is their real life story. They were turned from envied Duke lacrosse players to hated rapists in a matter of a night of partying. Accused by Crystal Mangum, a stripper who was paid to preform at the party, who had a helping hand by Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, who was up for reelection that year. As stated, the party was at the home, off campus, of the three captains, including David Evans. The party was a break from school and lacrosse, the whole team had to stay at campus for spring break. Before the party started the players called Allure, a stripper service, and asked for two white or Hispanic strippers, some didn’t even know that there was going to be strippers until the party started and they started to collect the fees for the strippers. When the strippers Crystal Mangum, had consumed Flexeril and alcohol before entering the property, and Kim Roberts, both African American, arrived about thirty-five of the forty-six players...

...Prosecutions, accusations, consequences The Salem witch trials were once known as “the devil’s magic” because of the witchcraft being used. Mary easty a victim of prosecution during the witch trials said “I never complied, but prayed against [Satan] all my days… I will say it, if it was my last time, I’m clear of all this sin”. These accusations led to consequences therefore, result as vicious prosecutions. During that time, the Salem witch trials were very prejudiced toward anyone. The circumstances that induced to the Salem witch trials were irrational. It all started “during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.”...

...Both in the notes from her trial and in the film we see folklore and ideas about the supernatural come into play. The supernatural is a common element throughout the stories of her life and the beliefs of the time in which she lived. In her trial notes, Joan is asked a number of questions about the supernatural (Champion, 1932). Those who accused Joan wanted her to be condemned as a witch and false prophet. We see them ask Joan about a tree which is believed to be magical and have fairies live in it. A major theme of the examination of Joan during her trial was related to whether she was or was not a false Prophet. The also asked her about a ring she had, and it is implied that they wanted to know if the ring was magic or blessed. Joan also was reported to have raise a three day old baby from the dead at Lagny....

...Samuel Parris had an eleven year old daughter named Elizabeth Parris, and a nine year old niece named named Abigail Williams. In January of 1692, both girls started displaying odd behavior. They would throw objects, scream randomly, made odd sounds, and contoured their body into unusual positions. Other girls including Ann Putnam (11), Mercy Lewis, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mary Walcott, and Mary Warren all had similar “episodes”. When visited by the doctor William Griggs, they were diagnosed with the supernatural; bewitchment. Later on February 29, Tituba (Samuel Parris’s Caribbean slave), Sarah Osborne, (an elderly poor woman), and Sarah Good (a beggar) were all interrogated by Johnathan Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin under the allegation of witchcraft. Then on March first, they were interrogated again before the magistrate. Both Sarah Osborne and Sarah good pleaded innocence but Tituba stated that she was guilty saying “the Devil came to me and bid me serve him”. She also stated that there were more people involved in the bewitching of the girls. Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse (both faithful to the church and the community) were questioned and named guilty. As more and more people confessed, more and more were named. The trials had very soon escalated to such a point that in April of 1692, Deputy Governor William Phipps decided to have the Special Court of Oyer hear the cases and the Terminer would decide for the cases for the Suffolk, Essex, and Middlesex counties. Johnathon Hathorne...

...Assignment 1 When I was nine I was in my Harry Potter phase; the whole nine yards: going to class in a Harry Potter robe, drawing a scar onto my forehead, and even playing Quiddich with my friends during recess. What I lacked was an authentic wizard ward. I couldn’t be Harry Potter without my own wand. Since I didn’t have the money to go out and buy a $50 wand, I did what any other nine year old would do, I stole one chopstick from my mother’s authentic Japanese chopstick set. She had received it as a gift from a business partner while working abroad. I was just going to use it until I saved up enough allowance to buy myself a real wand. Unfortunately, the first day I took it to school, I had it in my back pocket. I sat down and it snapped in half. I knew I was going to be in huge trouble if I told my mom so I did what any other nine year old would do, I buried the evidence and never spoke of it. A few months went by and my mother never brought it up, so I believed I was in the clear… but all good things do come to an end. Once she found out that one of her precious chopsticks was missing, she confronted me and like any other nine year old, I spilt the beans. I learn’t a valuable lesson about life that day, things from your past will come back to haunt you, or ground you in my situation. In the novel My Revolutions by Hari Kunzru and the 2012 film The Company You Keep, directed by Robert Redford, the protagonists both face similar struggles as the people who they used to...
