René Magritte’s Le Viol (Rape), is an oil painting made in 1934, during the Surrealist movement. It is basically a face on female body without a face. An assumption is that this female body is Magritte’s mother who drowned and was then found with her naked body showing and her face being hidden by her gown. Therefore, it is clear why Magritte chose to eliminate her facial characteristics. There are several interpretations, one of which is the way men see women. The fact that the face is not present illustrates how men objectify women and that they see them as sexual objects. That’s something Magritte probably wanted to show to the viewers by the title given. On the other hand, Magritte may have done that painting in order to just shock
