Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Health is the condition of an organism or one of its parts in which it performs its vital functions normally or properly: the state of being sound in body or mind. Water is the most important and abundant inorganic compound in all living systems. Although humans might be able to survive for weeks without food, without water you would die in a matter of days. Nearly all the body’s chemical reactions occur in a watery medium. Water has many properties that make it such as indispensable compound for life. Nutrients are chemical substances in food that body cells use for growth, maintenance, and repair. The six main types of nutrients are water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals and vitamins. Three organic nutrients—carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins provide the energy needed for metabolic reactions and serve as building blocks to make body structure. Some minerals and many vitamins are components of the enzyme systems that catalyze metabolic reactions. Essential nutrients are specific nutrients molecules that the body cannot make in sufficient quantity to meet its needs and thus must be obtained from the diet. Some amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients. Exercise is regular or repeated use of a faculty or bodily organ, bodily exertion for the sake of developing and maintaining physical fitness. Exercise is needed to stay healthy. Personalized Nutrition and Exercise Plan

...after getting to know me and I learned obese is how the professionals classify me and the “funny- fat girl” is how I perceive myself. I am 43 years old, five feet, four inches tall and recently had a full hysterectomy. I am not what would be described as morbidly obese but I am considered obese at 30 pounds over the ideal weight for my age and height according to the standard bmi calculators. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and osteoporosis are some of the health risks associated with being overweight (WebMd, 2011), post- hysterectomy surgery, and my family history. Living a healthy lifestyle through a well-balanced diet and exercise plan will help deter these and other health risks and helps change my own self-perception of who I am and how I am perceived by others. Setting reachable goals will aide in creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The goals I have set for myself include: create a list of priorities with myself as first on the list, increase activity levels in increments of five minutes per-month, create, maintain and execute a well-balanced meal plan each week, lose five pounds a month to lower potential health risks, increase water intake and continue education about nutritional needs at different stages of life. To meet the goals I have set are being done by time management. Creating a list of priorities with me as first on the list is one of the most important goals for me to achieve. I, like many others, tend to put my family...

...that healthy people have less medical expenses or that people treasure good health more than money. The goal of a healthy lifestyle is to have a long life and remain disease or cancer free. But the reality is the Commonwealth Fund, a private American foundation, ranked the United States of America last in the quality of healthcare compared to the world in 2014. Also, America is ranked as one of the most expensive healthcare providers in the world. The US was compared to countries like Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland. The rankings prove that the American healthcare system is indeed facing many issues. Some of the major issues are accessibility of healthcare to all, lack of consolidation within the industry, deficiency in technology, lack of data availability and lastly, over dependence on medications by healthcare professionals such as doctors.
