In 2013, Michigan State University football team went a span of 194 minutes and 33 seconds without allowing a touchdown; Michigan State’s defense has allowed just 3.75 yards per play and 2.10 yards per rushing attempt, both of which rank No.1 in FBS; The Spartans lead the FBS in time of possession (34:56 per game).(SpartyOn.com) In Michigan, from 2009 to 2013 there were 88.9 percent of people age of 25 above have education of high school graduate or higher which is higher than United State average of 86.0 percent, and also have 25.9 percent people have Bachelor’s degree or higher. In addition, Michigan has an average salary of jobs of $58,000. (Census.gov)
Where these numbers came from? It is Statistics. “People cannot make research without statistics and analysis.”(Zeleke) Statistics is important and critical, it can solve for society problem. Nowadays, we have a lot of technological advancement, mobile technology and data in our daily life. The world becomes more and more complex. We need people to be proficient to understand all information out there. How do we process? What is important? How do we analyze the information and make the right decision? Now, there are lots of problem that we are facing: human, race, climate change, economics hardships, and political instability etc. For solving these problems, we need statistics and modeling.
Statistics become more and more important; it is not only for statistician but also for everyone. Statistics not only help us organize the complicate data, but also help society. In other words, Statistics is also one of the strongest evidence; it can help people decide more things. Such as the research "Single statistic can strengthen public support for traffic safety laws." which given out four laws of the traffic, and given out the statistics of how the laws reduce risk to respondents. And as a result, if given out the statistics, nearly thirty percent of respondent became more supportive. "In our analysis, research-informed evidence considerably increased public support for safety initiatives that are known to make a difference. Knowing that scientific evidence influences public opinion provides support for continuing to generate and share research on injury prevention policies to better inform the public about key safety issues." At Michigan State University, statistics majors usually do many researches with other professors, and there will have many different topics of research. Because it is Statistics and Probability, we can do most of the research, but we just need more time to understand what the research’s field is and need more time to understand. At Michigan State University, we can go on to MSU undergraduate research to find some, or can directly ask a professor we feel interested to work with, and see if the professor can provide some research for us. There have many different kinds of research topics, such as Probability, Stochastics Process, Survival analysis, clinical biostatistics, health outcomes research, electronic health care databases, and statistical genomics, Mixed Models, Stochastics Processes and Random Fields etc. Not only the Statistics and Mathematics research, we can do other field’s research, such as psychology, biology or even economics, any field that feel interesting, statistics can do.
In one of the Dr. Zeleke’s research paper, "The Effect of Finite Memory Cutoff on Loop Erased Walk in Three Dimensions", set that the simple random walk one can construct a stochastic process by erasing paths that lead to the formation of loops. Such a process is called loop erased walk. Stochastic process is also called random process; it is a collection of random variables and represents the evolution of the random values over time. In the paper "consider a stochastic process constructed from the simple random walk by erasing loop of length N, where alpha (0, infinity) and N is the scaling parameter that will be taken to infinity in determining the limiting distribution" And this process call N loop erased walk. Among other things, Dr. Zeleke "prove that for an alpha (0, 0.63) the limiting distribution is Gaussian and for alpha > 2 the limiting distribution is equal to limiting distribution is equal to the limiting distribution of the loop erased walk." But could you understand what these are? Probably not, neither do I, but what I can conclude is, equations. Yes, it’s all “equations”. If you really want to understand those equations and what those words mean, come over and start your Statistics and Probability life.
According to Associate Chair of Statistics department Dr. Xiao, “you can do any kinds of job after graduation from statistics major.” Not only becoming a statistician, but also get into any other company, such as hospital experiment design, biostatistics and analyze of product’s profits. Because Statistics is a useful material, so we can do anything that relates to statistics. Nowadays, companies need people to help them analyze data. Statistics become useful and important to everyone, every career needs statistics. (Dr. Ueng)
Statistics happened in our daily life and also during work, not only about “data”, but we could use statistics in stock market by using time series, doing hospital research by using experimental design, and also process improvement of industry. During an interview, people may also use statistics in combination with psychology to see a person’s personality and see which kind of work the person can fit well, by using principle component. (Dr. Ueng) “Statistics in work not only about numbers and data, but it is also an interesting material to help us think and analyze” (Dr. Ueng). We will have too many random data during work in our daily life, and statistics can help us organize everything and make decision.
In Taiwan, most people like mathematic statistics more, but this does not go further than being a professor in college. However, in United State, most are applied statistics, which is more useful, after graduate, we can choose to be a professor or we can also use these knowledge to help us in work. But because Statistics and Probability is “material” for us, after we graduate, we still need to learn more about the field we work, and see how we can use our “material” to help us success during work.
Each year, more than 50,000 people are injured by jewelry in the U.S; each day, there are over 120 million sexual intercourse taking place all over the world; and the human eye blinks an average of 4,200,000 times a year. Statistics live in our daily life, any time and any place. (StatisticsBrain)

A Self-Analysis Paper for the Midterm

...strengths and weaknesses has helped me a lot to realize what I have improved, and what I still need to work on to improve. My two major strengths I have acquired during this semester are being abele to do my homework on time, and acquired the ability of outlining in order to control my idea through logically formulated outlines. What I need to work on to improve is class participation. I have improved my homework doing habit dramatically during this English 102 course. Doing homework has always been a complicated task for me before I attended this class. Since other English classes I took before were a full semester schedule, I used to come class with out doing my homework. Finally, when I registered in this accelerated and fast paced class, I realized that I had to do all my homework before I go class to follow my professor lecture very well. Now, I am able to understand what the professor teaches about. This helped me to follow the professor attentively during the lecture. Doing my homework in time is the most powerful thing I acquired during this course of semester. The second strength that I have improved a lot is my outlining ability to stick to my central idea. Before this class, I wrote a couple of paragraphs and essays on other English classes. However, I usually used to deviate from the main idea of my paper while I write. Then, I started to explore what makes my paper ineffective. Finally, I found out that my poor ability of outlining lowers my paper. Therefore, during...

...Continental Airlines field for bankruptcy(for a second time) ,lost $613 million ,and was ranked dead last in industry indicators such as on-time performance among the major carriers. So bleak was their situation that Continental’s mechanics used to routinely rip the logos off their uniforms so if they ran errands after work, no one would know they worked for the company. The result of these efforts was a demoralized workforce and a corporate reputation that put Continental near the top of Fortune’s list of “least admired companies”. According to Ned Walker, Vice president of communications for the company, ”You could not get any worse than Continental in 1994.” However, as the saying goes, that was then and this is now. Since Gordon Bethune arrived as their new CEO, Continental has made a 180 degree turnaround. Ironically, Bethune used Continental’s unenviable position as a launching pad for his “from Worst to First” campaign. In order to refocus Continental and streamline operations, Bethune eliminated more than 7000 jobs and dismissed 50 of his vice presidents. This sent a clear signal that major changes were underway. Bethune; Ken Carig, vice president of human resources; and the new management team put together a plan, called Go Forward, that HR would have a major role in implementing. The plan has four major parts: (1) Fly to win, making the routes Continental flies most profitable;(2)Fund the future, eliminating unnecessary expenditures;(3)Make Reliability a Reality, boosting...

Microfridge

...A Report - Microfridge: The Concept by Group 3A Background and concept of the product In 1987, Mr. Robert Bennett wanted to explore and exploit his idea to combine a refrigerator, freezer, and 500-watt microwave oven into a single unit called “Microfridge”. He is 31 years old and has a Master’s degree in engineering. He had devised electronic circuitry that shut off power to the refrigerator/freezer whenever the microwave was switched on. A hot plate and a refrigerator would draw 20 amps whereas the unit he designed would never pull more than 10 amps of current. Financials To this end, he approached a number of major electronic goods’ manufacturers and Samsung and Sanyo agreed to consider its production. Sanyo offered to provide the product at the rate of $263 per unit. According to them, the estimation of upfront tooling payment was $170,000. Following that, Bennett added $300,000 for the first year of selling and administration hoping he would earn a return of 15% of the selling price (Selling price of $309 on Sanyo’s Landed price). He also is planning to leave his job and use the proceeds of $50000 in funding. Surveys To go ahead with his idea, Bennett approached Boston’s Atlantic Research to conduct interviews with 200 Massachusetts. This gave him an idea about the demand of the product in the market and his end customers’ expectations. His research found that students were interested in the concept of micro-fridge because 90% of the students were using hazardous appliance...

Reflection Paper

...high school the question that always came up to me was what do you want to major in once you start your college career. Unfortunately I never really had a solid answer for that question; I was always trying to figure out what I was interested in. My mentality was to take it day by day and see where life took me possibly figuring out what I want to study for the next four years of college. My first year of college was a great experience from me, I was able to live at school and take on the responsibility as an adult. At of all the class I took at St. Thomas Aquinas College I still had no idea in what I wanted to major in. It became a frustrating process because I had felt like I had wasted a year in not coming to a decision. I had a couple of ideas but when I looked at the big picture on what kind of jobs I can get with that specific major and the classes I had to take for the future, it never became promising so I let it go. I chose to stay undecided and take life as it came to me with getting discouraged. My main concern then was now to obtain a strong GPA. Even though I had no major I took core classes which every major required in order to start setting myself up. Setting a path for myself in order to be successful for the future was very important to me. Figuring out what I wanted to do came later, for now my goal was put myself in the best possibly situation so I can be prepared when I do choose a major. My first step was to take those core requirements because even though...

Big Data

...1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to examine the definition of big data. It also seeks to examine the components of a Unified Data Architecture and its ability to facilitate the analysis of big data. 2 WHAT IS BIG DATA Cuzzocrea, Song and Davis (2011) defined big data in part as being “enormous amounts of unstructured data produced by high-performance applications falling in a wide and heterogeneous family of application scenarios”. In recent years there has been an increasing interest and focus on big data. Many and varied definitions have been proposed but without a consensus on a single definition. The MIT Technology Review (2014), brought attention to the work of Ward and Barker (2014) which examined a number of definitions of big data that have attracted some general ICT industry support from leading ICT industry analysts and organisations such as Gartner, Oracle and Microsoft. In their work they proposed to provide a “concise definition of an otherwise ambiguous term”. The author having just attended a digital government conference with a large proportion of big data tagged presentations also noted that no single definition was offered. There was however a common content theme that supported the Ward and Barker definition of: “Big data is a term describing the storage and analysis of large and or complex data sets using a series of techniques including, but not limited to: NoSQL, MapReduce and machine learning.” 3 UNIFIED DATA ARCHITECTURE 3.1...

...It is not easy to find out as to who contributes and who has the control on the attrition of employees. Various studies/survey conducted indicates that everyone is contributing to the prevailing attrition. Attrition does not happen for one or two reasons. The way the industry is projected and speed at which the companies are expanding has a major part in attrition. For a moment if we look back, did we plan for the growth of this industry and answer will be no. The readiness in all aspects will ease the problems to some extent. In our country we start the industry and then develop the infrastructure. All the major software companies have faced these realities. If you look within, the specific reasons for attrition are varied in nature and it is interesting to know why the people change jobs so quickly. Even today, the main reason for changing jobs is for higher salary and better benefits. But in call centers the reasons are many and it is also true that for funny reasons people change jobs. At the same time the attrition cannot be attributed to employees alone. The employees always assess the management values, work culture, work practices and credibility of the organization. The Indian companies do have difficulties in getting the businesses and retain it for a long time. There are always ups and downs in the business. Geopolitics in Euro-Mediterranean Area

...EURO-MEDITERRANEAN AREA Introduction Since several centuries, The Euro-Mediterranean Area has always been the center of the world, geopolitically speaking, representing a major hub when it comes to political interactions, commercial alliances, diplomatic communication and socio-cultural connections. The appellation of United States of Europe can highlight the crucial importance of these nations and the impact of its cooperation and interactions at the international level. In July 13th 2008, Nicolas Sarkozy had triggered a process that led to the Union for the Mediterranean that became today a huge union between countries all around the world, over and above the Mediterranean Sea, attesting of the tremendous magnitude of its geopolitical power. To me, the major objective of this Union should be conducted by a real long-term geopolitical, economic and socio-cultural strategy aiming the promotion of the economical integration and democratic reforms among and between Euro-Mediterranean nations. Since this geopolitical area is highly characterized by an ambient heterogeneity, between North Nations and South Nations in one hand, between wealthy powers, and more underprivileged countries on the other hand, economical and socio-cultural disparities between different geopolitical regions seems to me that they represent the 1st major problem and geopolitical challenge. Indeed, this inevitable battle for a homogeneous united geopolitical area can be a capital step that will lead us to a troubleshooting...

If I Were Mayor

...the Mayor of Burleson, I would take every advantage of it. Being the Mayor comes with great authority and also great responsibility and I would use both of these traits in order to achieve my goals. To start off, if I were mayor I would try to focus on and improve the marketing, advertisement, and publication concerning community wide events and fundraisers. I would work to help reach out to the youth of Burleson so that our generation can become more involved with our community at a younger age. Getting the teenagers and children to participate in community events is vital to contributing to the major goals of our community and to helping Burleson thrive and grow. In addition to connecting the youth to the community, I would also pass an ordinance to raise fines for littering across our town. In continuing to unite the community of Burleson, keeping this city beautiful plays a major part. Littering is just one way in which our town becomes less unified, so I would fight to stop this disrespect of our city. I would also try to organize more money into a budget for making our city more beautiful. This budget would cover more landscaping and maintenance projects across the community. Another thing I would do as mayor would be to set aside more money in our budget to go towards our city’s drug awareness program. It is sad heart-breaking and devastating to see so many of our promising teenagers and young adults turning to drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse. In strengthening this...
