ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor.

If one believes Homer, Sisyphus was the wisest and most prudent of mortals. According to another tradition, however, he was disposed to practice the profession of highwayman. I see no contradiction in this. Opinions differ as to the reasons why he became the futile laborer of the underworld. To begin with, he is accused of a certain levity in regard to the gods. He stole their secrets. Egina, the daughter of Esopus, was carried off by Jupiter. The father was shocked by that disappearance and complained to Sisyphus. He, who knew of the abduction, offered to tell about it on condition that Esopus would give water to the citadel of Corinth. To the celestial thunderbolts he preferred the benediction of water. He was punished for this in the underworld. Homer tells us also that Sisyphus had put Death in chains. Pluto could not endure the sight of his deserted, silent empire. He dispatched the god of war, who liberated Death from the hands of her conqueror.

It is said that Sisyphus, being near to death, rashly wanted to test his wife's love. He ordered her to cast his unburied body into the middle of the public square. Sisyphus woke up in the underworld. And there, annoyed by an obedience so contrary to human love, he obtained from Pluto permission to return to earth in order to chastise his wife. But when he had seen again the face of this world, enjoyed water and sun, warm stones and the sea, he no longer wanted to go back to the infernal darkness. Recalls, signs of anger, warnings were of no avail. Many years more he lived facing the curve of the gulf, the sparkling sea, and the smiles of earth. A decree of the gods was necessary. Mercury came and seized

First Date

...It was a beautiful fall evening. The sun was just beginning to give way to incoming twilight. I could smell winter in the air, even through my closed window. Soon there'd be snow on the ground. Matchbox Twenty was playing on my clock radio. I want to push you around...” The mood was set for a soft autumn night. However the mood inside my room was quite different. I was running around trying to do a million things a one time. My makeup was all wrong for my outfit. My hair was too big, no, now too flat. My stomach was rolling inside itself. My poor tummy was on tumble dry and I couldn't quite get it to stop. I couldn't find my shoes; my shirt had foundation on the side. What I really wanted to do was to sit on my bed and cry. Brian had called twenty minutes before the chaos. I could not believe he had called me. He probably thought I was stupid because I was so tongue-tied. He asked me if I would mind coming to dinner with him and a few of his friends. Would I mind? Do cows moo? The horn honked. My frustration grew. If this was a real date, my first one ever, shouldn't he come to the door and pick me up? Maybe take my arm in his and lead me to the car? I had envisioned my first date to at least start off right. This must be an omen. I walked out the door. The moment I heard the click of the lock I knew I looked horrible. A million thoughts raced through my mind, among these were the fact that I should have worn the blue shirt, my hair looks horrible, and oh God everyone is watching...

A Raisin in the Sun

...Entry 1: Dear Diary, I am just now leaving The United States of America and on the plane right now as I’m writing this. Mama, Walter, Ruth, and Travis all dropped me off at the airport to say goodbye. It was really hard because I know I will not see them for a while, but they know what’s best for me. I know Mama wanted me to be with George, but he truly just wasn’t for me. He wanted me to be someone who I was not. He tried to push me away from who I am. I am Beneatha and proud of myself and family and since he couldn’t respect that I had to let him go. I hope Mama will understand why I did such a thing. She will never know how much I love her. As I am looking out of this window at the little specks of houses diapering I am thinking about what my future holds. I wonder if I have made the right decision, but I can only hope so. Joseph has changed my view of life. He has changed me for the better. I have always wanted to help others after I had watched the little boy in my neighborhood cut his head open. I know I am not the greatest follower of god, but I think this might be his plan for me. To look after the sick and diseased. I am delighted I have met Asagai. It’s almost like he is my other half because when I am with him I feel so alive and free. He makes me feel wanted and loved. He may not be the rich like George, but I love him just as much, if not more. Looking out into the clouds I see a happy future. Saving lives, curing patients, and caring for all who have been hurt...

Music

...Paragraph 1: There are three main components that cause change in the human mind which are the lyrical content, the rhythm and the dynamics of music. First and foremost, the lyrical content have the ability to influence an individual through its explicit lyrics. Usually, heavy metal and rap music would contain drug abuse, violence, and sexual references; thus, themes of rebellion, alienation and vengeance are present in certain songs. Some songs contain metaphors, lyrical intelligence, and double ambiguous meanings which could imply subliminal messages. The next cause would be rhythm, which is defined as the flow of music through time. The sub-elements under rhythm is beat and tempo. Beat is the regular or recurrent pulsation that divides music into equal units of time while tempo is the speed of the beat and considered the basic pace of music....

Give Me Novicain

...Humanities; 2* 09/5/10 The song “Give Me Novocain” by the band Green Day reveals a sense of suffering, and the use of drugs to help ease pain. The chorus “Drain the pressure from the swelling / This sensation’s over whelming/ Give me a long kiss goodnight and everything will be alright/ Tell me Jimmy I won’t feel a thing/ So give me Novocain.” This bluntly shows that what ever point of view this is coming from that person is very clearly suffering and is using drugs as a way to escape from it. The beat of the drums and the guitar is slow at first, then changes to a more up beat tone, hinting at the drugs raging through a person’s system. The slower beat that the song returns to is the high. It’s the calm that a person feels when the are worry free. When I first heard this song I had no reason to believe it was about anything than what was being obviously sung about. But when I listened to the lyrics it revealed the suffering that we as humans go through and what some people will do to escape, even if only for a matter of hours. It made me think about all the times I wished I could escape from something as simple as my mother. I changed my way of dealing with things from then on. Instead of wishing I could just get away by any means possible, or punching walls, I would just think about everything I have that is worth staying for. Everything I did both in thought and in action changed slightly. I never thought about wanting to run away or get at my mom and instead of hitting...

A Team Building Strategy

...A TEAM BUILDING STRATEGY Team-building strategies outlined in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team include: (a) absence of trust, (b) fear of conflict, (c) lack of commitment, (d) avoidance of accountability, and (e) inattention to results (Lencioni, 2002, p. 187). Two useful strategies to focus on in order to reduce team conflict are—commitment and accountability. Lack of commitment is most often a root-cause of many flawed team performances. This is because nearly everyone is permitted to march to the beat of a different drummer. No one really agrees with what has seemingly been agreed to, so they go on their individual own way to do what they really want to do. What results is a disjointed and confused outcome. Decisions are often delayed because there is little coherence to any plan or strategy. The leader must break this apparent stalemate by bringing clarity of purpose to the team and solicit complete buy-in among them. The leader must align the entire team around the objective such that the focus of each individual effort is clearly understood and that they are in agreement with the way forward (Lencioni, 2002, p. 208). Lack of accountability is generally the root-cause of why an objective may not be accomplished as expected. Avoidance of accountability can coexist among normally highly motivated people that serve to undermine the objective by not holding others responsible for their errant actions or unproductive inactions (Lencioni, 2002, p. 189). The...

...had to stop. My breath became short, my heart pounded and my legs gave way. A shower of bombs hit the side of my house. The force of the blast threw me to the ground! There are streets being bombed right this minute; I’m scared. Mama and Papa told me that everything is going to be ok, but I’m still scared. They said that I have to be evacuated out of London soon; I have to go somewhere far away. I will miss them dearly and I’m sure they will miss me too. I’m only 13 but my mama can’t come with me, she said that Churchill our prime minister made up the rules. I have mixed thoughts about being evacuated; I am worried about the type of people I am going to stay with and whether they will care for me or not, however, I love the countryside as it is very peaceful and quiet unlike the streets of London!! I’m going to bed now, speak soon. Mary. Dear diary, November 1, 1940 From late last night until early this morning, I witnessed some indescribable events. Armed soldiers and police paraded the streets looking for Jews. Jews were taken from their houses and other peoples attics where they hid. All I could hear throughout the night were gunshots. Between 200-300 Jews have been killed already. If they weren’t killed, they were taken away as prisoners. Mama told me that they were being taken to concentration camps where they would work themselves to death. It was definitely not tranquil! The sky is always filled with thick black smoke and there is a stench of dead rotting bodies. I...
