Man’s Best Friend Recently, I read that in some religions, it is felt that when a pet owner is ill, the animal can take on the illness to help in healing their owner. While many pet owners claim that their pets actually do make them feel better, there are still some skeptics. However, research studies show that pets do have a very positive impact on various aspects of our health. In fact, for nearly 25 years, studies have correlated pet ownership with the following health benefits: lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, better psychological health, lower heart attack rates, higher survival rates, enhanced self-esteem and social interaction. So as people take care of their companion animals, the animals are in turn taking care of their owners. Dog owners would tell you how their best friend would snuggle up close to them for comfort and follow them everywhere and know well their routines such as feeding time and the time when their owners return from work. Experts say that pets are very therapeutic and can even prolong the lives of a human being, especially elderly or these widowed and living alone. Among the several emotional and physical benefits of owning a pet, these animals can form very close bonds with their human owners and in fact dogs are even known as men's best friend. Primarily, owning a pet serves as a wonderful way to rediscover a sense of purpose. It helps people feel needed and wanted. After all, most people can’t help but smile when their dog greets them with their tail wagging or their cat curls up cozily on their lap. Providing for an animal’s needs by going to the pet store or taking a dog for a walk helps reduce seniors’ social isolation by encouraging them to get out into the world. They may meet new friends at a dog park or at the pet store when they go to buy more

Man’s Best Friend

...Dogs are much better friends to the average person than cats could ever be. Cats and dogs both make a good pets depending on the individuals life style. The dog is a lot more social with their owner than a cat is with their owner. Dogs love to please their owner in all kinds of ways, and cats just wants to be pleased by their owner. Dogs can be train much faster and easier than a cat could be trained. Many people have a pet at home. The typical house pet is ether a cat or a dog, and some times people have both cats and dogs. I believe that a cat is a better choose if a person lives in an apartment because cats get patty train much faster, as wall as they don’t need that much space. I also believe that the dogs are more suited for a person that has a house because most dogs need to get out and exercise and play. If a person is looking for there first pet they need to consider their living situation, before choosing between a cat and a dog. Dogs are much more social with people than cats are. Dogs either want to be petted or play with you, such as playing fetch or tug-a-war. If dogs aren’t playing with you they are most likely laying close by if not even in your lad, depending on the size of the dog. On the other hand cats are most likely in the other room sleeping because they typical want to be left alone or get upset by load noises, and people that they don’t know. You may only see them two or three times a day, unless you go looking for them. All dogs want to do is to...

Man's Best Friend and Master

...Man’s Best Friend (and Master) Mark Doty’s poem, “Golden Retrievals,” shows the reader more than just the thoughts of a dog going for a walk. Through various poetic techniques, Doty is able to express the basis for a very serious human ailment which is present in (nearly) all of us. This chronic crisis of which we are guilty of is literally expressed in words better than any human could say. In this poem, Doty is showing us that dogs, even though they are much more simple-minded creatures than us, possess profound wisdom which we would do well to take heed. Not only that, but the situation is taken to a whole different level in the final two lines. The most basic element of this poem to understand is that the speaker is a dog (presumably a golden retriever). The thoughts of this dog quickly rattle by as the reader tries to keep up: “Fetch? Balls and sticks capture my attention / seconds at a time” (1-2). And for the preceding four lines the dog stays true to this, and each idea he (we’ll assume the dog here is male) presents us truly lasts no long than a second each. The above lines also serve as an excellent example of Doty’s use of enjambment in this poem to help represent the dog’s never-ending train of thought. The transition from the first to the second stanza flow better than any of the lines surrounding them: “Sniff the wind, then / I’m off again” (4-5). By putting the break one syllable before the end of the line instead of at the end of it denies the...

Lae1 a Dog Is a Man's Best Friend

...Are you ever in need of a good listener? Are you ever in need of a protector or do you just want a new responsibility to make you happy? Might I suggest to you a pet, not just any pet, but a dog! A dog is a man’s best friend, a commonly used quote that is quiet accurate. I would adopt a dog because they are good companions, good protectors, a good responsibility to take on and they help you to be active. Dogs are good companions because they are very sensitive to human emotions and can brighten your mood when you are having a bad day. A dog is very good at making your surroundings come alive when you feel lonely, by just looking at you and wagging its tail in expression of love and affection for its owner and human companion. Dogs are excellent listeners and good secret keepers. So if you are ever alone and don’t have anyone to talk to, don’t worry your little furry friend will never be too busy to listen. I don’t think there is any other pet that is more loyal than a dog. Have you ever noticed how closely a dog walks with his master? I strongly believe that dogs are excellent pets for everyone to have in general but more specifically for challenged individuals. Which other pet is like a dog that can be trained to be of service to challenged individuals? These trained dogs are good companions who can complete various tasks for their owners as well as they can help them to find specific locations, due to their excellent sense of direction. Dogs, whether trained or not can add...

Man’s Best Friend: Dogs or Technology

...Cade Pendleton English 2010 Angie Carter June 14, 2012 Final Research Paper Man’s Best Friend: Dogs or Technology A few years ago I had the opportunity to job shadow a canine (k9) officer while he was participating in routine training with his dog. Little did I know, “routine training” meant all police canine officers in Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Davis County would assemble at an abandoned building and practice multiple real life scenarios. As I stood and watched in awe all night, I witnessed a few unsettling scenarios. First, I witnessed dog being released on command to attack a person acting as a criminal. The attack wasn’t the unsettling part about the scenario. What really bothered me was seeing the dog misidentify a fellow police officer as the criminal and attack the officer, who unfortunately was not in a bite suit. A bite suit is protective clothing the trainers wear when training their dogs to attack. Since the officer was not wearing protective gear, he suffered many lacerations and received multiple stiches. As the night continued, I was able to watch another training scenario involving Taser guns or stun guns. Unlike the dog, this technique worked flawlessly. The officer was able to take down the accurate perpetrator in a proficient manner and no fellow officers were injured. On this particular night, there was an accidental injury that doesn’t happen often involving the canine. However, this introduced a couple of questions. Does this happen frequently...

...quality of a man's life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor [sic].” e novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” (2010) page 49-51 written by Sherman Alexie, the narrator Arnold Spirit also known as Junior claims that Indians were worst of times because they have forgotten how to dream and hope while the whites are best of times because they have full of hope which is what makes things happen. The Indians never care to dream because they are surrounded by hopelessness, they have forgotten how to dream and hope. But the Reardan kids who represent the whites, they dared to dream because they were surrounded by beauty, they were smart, magnificent and ambitious. Although sometimes Arnold also lies and plays some tricks, he works hard to prove himself, to gain respect and to make friends. It’s a big challenge, but well worth the effort. On the other hand, the internal conflict is the difficulties of creating Arnold’s own autonomy while being faithful to his tribe. Arnold refuses to give up but at the cost of losing his best friend and being considered to betray his tribe. I don’t think this conflict can be resolved only through Arnold’s hard work; it also relies on others’ understanding. I’ll never forget what Rowdy says to Arnold, “You’re an old-time nomad.” It seems Rowdy finally forgives Arnold but I think Rowdy has never really get mad at Arnold. Narrative

...Sunday night procrastination panic mode. Either way I was going to be panicking in some way or form. As I sat inside Love Library on a Thursday night, deciding on powering through the mountain of work, my phone buzzes twice, indicating I had a text. I look over at it and see a text from my friends back home in Dallas. I can’t help but smile and look over and see a screen shot of a picture of all 5 of us back in high school during our F5GNO sleepovers. The picture is of us posing altogether in front of Cheesecake Factory, thinking we were the coolest people to walk on earth. At the time, being only 16 years old, we felt like we ruled the world. “Are you guys ready?” as I read the group text from my best friend Kourtney. We called her KHam on all of our phones just cause we all had our own little nicknames for one another. It was the summer of 2010 before we all headed off to college. We all knew that our last days with each other were soon approaching, but it didn’t stop us from seeing each other every day practically and making plans and having sleepovers. “I’m about to leave to pick up Dahlia,” I texted back as I was heading out for the night. These four girls have been my best friends since the beginning of high school and any night spent with them was always a great story to joke and laugh about days later. “I’m leaving my house right now, should I pick up anything?” as Korrin or aka Korn as we called her texted to us. “Picking up anything,” indicated alcohol, but it...

6 Types of Toxic Friends

...1. The Promise Breaker This friend constantly disappoints you or breaks promises, most likely because she herself was constantly disappointed during her formative years. Your friend is unable to stop herself from repeating that pattern. It is an annoying but comfortable pattern for your friend, and without psychological help, it may be hard for her or him to alter this pattern. You could abandon the friend and the friendship, or you could find a way to detach yourself by lowering your expectations for this friendship. If she promises to do something for you, even to meet you for a cup of coffee, you can say, "Sure," but protect yourself by knowing, in the back of your mind, that this friend "nine times out of 10" is going to cancel on you. Although your friend may always have been this way, she may have also recently acquired this trait because of something she is going through right now. If a friend who has always been there for you, through thick and thin, has only recently become less reliable, you might want to cut her some slack. You have to decide if this is a lifelong trait that will be hard or impossible to change, a temporary condition that will be short-lived, or something, if it does continue indefinitely, that you are willing to accept and handle. One way to try to change the Promise Breaker is to help her to understand the consequences of your ignored pledges. Perhaps you have been keeping your disappointments about this to yourself. Try telling her how it...
