Internatinal Marketing Case Study The case study below exemplifies a contrast between two working cultures: Canadian and Taiwanese. Read the text and the list of possible actions. Then make recommendations as to what the Canadian should do choosing from the list below, ranking them in order of priority, adding any other actions you think necessary. Dave Thompson is a Canadian working for a ‘Baby Bell’ company which owns shares in a Taiwanese mobile phone company. They have recently acquired a license to operate in this crowded and competitive market. Dave has been posted to Taiwan on a three-year contract. He now has been living there for three months. He has good experience of the mobile phone business, both technically and strategically, and was previously involved in the start-up of a new mobile company in Lithuania. He believes he has the opportunity to make the new company a great success by adopting the management style of his home company: open, innovative, confident and aggressive. In Taiwan he faces a tradition based on Chinese hierarchies and family-run businesses. The Taiwanese company Dave works for belongs to one of these families, but the current generation sees the advantages of a western approach in what is for them a new kind of business. So they back his efforts to ‘turn the company around’. Dave’s biggest problem is one of time: he wants to get on with building up a western-style...

The appropriate cross exchange rate should be 1 Canadian dollar = 3 New Zealand dollars. Thus, the actual value of the Canadian dollars in terms of New Zealand dollars is more than what it should be. One could obtain Canadian dollars with U.S. dollars, sell the Canadian dollars for New Zealand dollars and then exchange New Zealand dollars for U.S. dollars. With $1,000,000, this strategy would generate $1,006,667 thereby representing a profit of $6,667. [$1,000,000/$.90 = C$1,111,111 × 3.02 = NZ$3,355,556 × $.30 = $1,006,667] Question 3 If the firm uses a forward hedge, it will receive 400,000($1.50) = $600,000 in 180 days. If the...

This dicision depend strongly on the activities of the company, in other words with what type of business profile this company identifies itself. There are two major categories in our global observation what a company can be. The first one is the firms that have industrial backround, like goods production. Second one is companies that are based on service. This second category is not descused in this paper due to the less importance of the site selection decision, because it doesn’t matter whether the whole business process is situated at the same location. ...The Altria Group, Inc. Often referred to as “the house the Marlboro Man built”, The Altria Group, Inc. is the world’s largest tobacco company. Altria operates its cigarette business through the companies known as Phillip Morris USA and Philip Morris International, both of which sell Marlboro – the world’s largest selling cigarette brand since 1972 (“The Altria Group,” n.d.). This company controls about half of the US tobacco market. This is also the parent company of Kraft Foods. I chose to do a paper on this particular company because of the practices of lies and deceit that it has followed for many years. Some of the behaviors that I find socially and ethically irresponsible are that the company continually down plays the addictiveness and severe risk to health that their product can cause. Over the years the company has been under scrutiny for many different things including the practice of employing under age children to hand out cigarettes, falsifying legal and medical documents, and the paying off of political and legal leaders to accomplish the things that it wants done. This corporation has also been listed in the Wall Street Journal as Number 1 in a list of the top 10 worst places for a woman to work because of the fact that there are no women in any upper management positions and they employ nearly 75,000 people in the Philip Morris US plant alone (“Unethical Companies,” n.d.). At the annual shareholders meeting in 2011, Philip Morris International celebrated...

...perspective The worlds of work and education are changing, and leaders in today’s educational institutions need to determine how to effectively lead in the acquisition, development, and dissemination of information to tomorrow’s workers. Leadership is necessary to bring cohesion to the distance education arena within higher education. Drucker (1998) maintained that in the latter part of the last century, technology resulted in a transformation of the social structure. We saw the “rise and fall of the blue-collar worker” (p. 539), the rise of the industrial worker who gave way to the rise of the knowledge worker, a term unknown prior to 1959 (p. 542). These societal and cultural changes meant leaders were challenged to rethink how they encouraged management, workers, and organizations. If as Drucker (1998, p. 551) claimed, “Knowledge has become the key resource,” ways need to be found to develop and share knowledge. This is the challenge for higher education transformational leaders. A...

Its main purpose is to study a business potential of this new competitive advantage resource and its productivity paradox. A competitive advantage factor model (CAF model) has been proposed and the structural modelling (SEM) has been performed on the case of a small transitional Slovenian hotel sector. The study contributes to knowledge on ICT competiveness and ICT productivity paradox in hotel sector. Further, its results hold practical implications for the strategy for hotels operating in small-sized hotel industries in transitional or ICT developing environments. In more concrete terms, research findings indicate that such hotel sectors need to speed the ICT implementation. ICT as such doesn’t directly increase the firm’s profitability, yet there is an indirect positive impact of factor ICT on a firm’s financial performance that emerges through other competitiveness factors, such as differentiation, qulity or image, which helps firms to stay competitive on the...
