Personal Assessment of Management Skills I need to do better in developing self-awareness. I have never sought out knowledge about my strengths and weaknesses from employees. If I make it into management at Ford then I will have surveys filled out by my employees to gain this insight annually. I need to do better at understanding how I deal with situations that are uncertain. Gaining power and influence is another area of managing that I could use more improvement in.I try to provide recognition, but I don’t look outside the group enough to get others expectations and preferences. I can also use some more improvement in building effective teams and teamwork. Looking further into this skill area I could definitely make gains in team membership, and fostering teamwork. Letting more opinion’s in to make sure the group is being innovative in thought. If I am able to progress my skills in these areas it will show my management that I am ready to move into the ranks of management. It will be more apparent that I am able to lead and empower employees to get their jobs and tasks completed. These are definite traits that management is looking for in its newly appointed managers and supervisors. If I am able to become better at building effective teams and fostering teamwork I will have the skills that will allow me to resolve conflicts with co-workers. Areas that I need to improve to help resolve conflict are being better at showing concern when someone has differing views than me. Allowing myself to evaluate and listen to differing views will potentially allow better decision making. Being able to improve these skills will allow me to resolve conflict, and keep the team working together as a group rather than building dissention into the team. I think after reviewing this survey I can see that you always need to keep evaluating. You can look at

Leaders

...instinctive leadership qualities and traits; many people can become great leaders with the training, earned respect and situations or environment. This paper will also discuss what makes an effective leader. Paper Section Whether great leaders are born or are they made is a greatly debated subject. Some people are certainly born with leadership instinct(s) that may never be fully realized and developed. Others may have traits that may not be traditionally thought of as natural born leader traits but they possess other skills and the desire to lead that can turn them into an effective leader. "Leaders are developed. Leadership is nothing more than a collection of skills, that when employed, produces results." (Garic, 2006) In today's ever-changing job market and economy, many leaders and many types of effective leaders will be needed. Leadership development is the way to mold various personal traits: personality, talent, honesty, ability, sincerity, skill, confidence, integrity, into a good leader. As Pace states: "There are no set rules for what makes a good leader, but most successful leaders can draw on several qualities to help them lead." (Pace, 2006) Leaders draw on personal experience, as well as, training, knowledge and reflection of others' experience. Learning leadership can be illustrated thusly: Experience +New Knowledge + Reflection (with support & feedback) + TIME (more practice/experience) = Leadership Growth and Development (Ruvolo, Petersen, &...

...LEARNING’S ROLE IN EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT You often know it when you walk into a place of business. You can tell who is bored, distracted or unhappy. And you can tell who is focused, invested and engaged. Most employers prefer the latter type of employees, of course, because they tend to work harder, be more productive, provide better customer service, and are often just more fun to work with. But determining how to engage employees is a major challenge. The business literature provides few sure-fire, easy-toimplement ways of increasing employee engagement. With this challenge in mind, the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) commissioned the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) to conduct a survey and develop a study on employee engagement. “Learning’s Role in Employee Engagement” was sponsored by Dale Carnegie Training. The goal was to gain an overview of engagement in today’s workplace and to find out how organizations can boost engagement levels, with a particular focus on learning’s role in the process. The final report is based on survey responses from 776 HR and learning executives and an extensive review of the workplace literature. The results were intriguing. The research team found that engagement truly is an issue of major significance to most organizations, which is probably related to the fact that the average organization has some serious engagement problems. Only about a third of the average respondent’s workforce is highly engaged, and nearly...

Self

...Writer’s Self-Portrait I have a dream that I can travel around the world, and take picture from every place I have been, and share with my family and friends to encourage them to do what they dream. And I know my mother also likes to travel, but sadly, she always thinks taking good care of family is her only responsibility, she cannot leave home. I always tell her, “ Your kids are grown up. Don’t worry too much about us. Just go anywhere you want to go.” But she just cannot. So now, I am here. I took a lot of pictures and sent them to my mother, then told her about where I live and how it looks like here. I hope I can be a good writer or storyteller, when people read or listen to my story, they can feel they are here with me. Especially my mom, I wish I can use words with pictures to let her sees what I have seen. I was thinking to write a letter for my father before I came here, but I failed it, I cannot written up what I was thinking. My father is a traditional Chinese father, his face is always looks like serious, and he doesn’t talk too much, also sometimes I don’t really talk to him, it is because I can feel that he always thinks I am too childish and I don’t like that feeling. Sex Education

...SEX EDUCATION? Imagine this scene. A young girl of fourteen approaches her mother and asks, “mom, how was I made?”. The mother goes blank. She is confused as to what she wants to know first. Would it be how to explain the miraculous process of reproduction and conception? Or would she prefer to know how her child got the nerve to ask such a question? It can not be denied that in today’s time, sex has become a household term. If before it was considered taboo, nowadays, it may be spoken as easily as saying one’s name. In effect, it may now be discussed everywhere by everyone including children. The term is actually not a bad one. In fact, it is a gift from God to any married couple. It is the process by which two people, blessed by God, become instruments of His creation. What makes it a “dirty” thing now is what many young people do to it. Sex has been abused and done by people even at a very young age of 14. This scenario has led to teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, single parenthood, premature marriages, broken families, and eventually, poverty. The only solution the goverment sees that can be deemed possible to curb these incidents is by sex education---teaching sex in basic education. Are we Filipinos ready for this? I do not think so. But have got another option? No, we don’t. We have got no choice. This leads us back to teaching sex in school. But how can this be done? There have to be rules or guidelines that must be implemented in order that...

New Employee Training

...position as a computer support specialist have different requirements. Some organizations prefer employees to obtain up-to-date certifications, but some organizations prefer for new employees to have an associates or bachelor’s degree (JobBank USA, 2010). Although the employee may meet the educational requirement to obtain a job as a computer support specialist, the company must make sure that the employee is capable of performing the unique operations of the company. Computer support specialist should be kept up-to-date on the latest technology since technology changes every day. New employees should be evaluated to see if they need additional training. According to Bohlander and Snell (2007), competency assessment focuses on the sets of skills and knowledge employees need to be successful at knowledge-intensive jobs. Competency assessment is a superior way to see if an employee needs additional training to perform the tasks of a job. A company or organization can ask employees to perform certain tasks required for the job, to see if the employee needs additional training. Implementing the correct training program is important to organizations. If the training process is not done correctly, a company can waste a large amount of money by providing poor training to employees. For entry-level positions as a computer support specialist, apprenticeship training can be very effective. Apprenticeship training is common in the information technology field, and other skilled traded. It...

Training

...ver the years, with globalization and expansion of business activities throughout the world, with global financial issues added, it is now becoming important for organizations and companies to expand their horizon in terms of the way they function and the resources they employ/ need to employ to be able to work as a viable and profitable business. Due to these changes, the skills and knowledge held by employees in organizations become outdated, and companies have to rethink how they can train and develop their workers to be able to function in such a dynamic, ever-changing working environment. At the same time, it was important for employers to develop new skills too, to compete in the global market and be competitive (Noe, 2008). So as to cope with these changes and uncertain financial times, training and ongoing learning as part of the employee’s job profile have been given priority, where the time and expenses involved are now being considered to be investments in human capital, allowing companies to realize the full worth of these “assets”. These practices and policies are being taken up by most companies in countries of the western world (Tovey, 2008). There are a number of factors or events which have brought about this shift in thinking where companies and organizations have policies which pertain specifically to the enhancement of employees’ training and encourage ongoing and lifelong learning. The principle behind these policies, one could speculate, is simple and...
