1. Why are M&S in this predicament? Has increased overseas sourcing helped or hindered their marketplace performance?

Business was only getting worse for M&S through the 1990’s. The company started off on top of the department store chain, but by 1998, sales began dropping. By 1998, sales had dropped by 6%. As oppose to helping themselves by increasing the sourcing overseas, they spread out too fast and were not able to manage all of their new factories. 5 Factories were closed in that same time period. As they were losing control of their business, competitors made their arrival and easily took over the fashion industry knocking M&S off their throne for some years

2. Given that costs must be reduced, how can M&S capture the potential benefits of low-cost sourcing whilst still improving responsiveness?

* M&S was one of the first companies to buy directly from the manufacturer, which reduced some costs. On top of that, worked with the largest suppliers in order to reduce the cost of manufacturing and shipping the goods, thus allowing the reduced costs. By having a consolidation warehouse, it was easier and more efficient for M&S to be able to ship it’s own product to its stores as oppose to having to set up different ship locations with the manufacturer. M&S was then able to perfect this Supply chain as they were more in control of the distribution of their goods

3. Is the current one-size-fits all approach to supply chain management strategy the best way forward for the company, or are there better alternatives?

* I do not believe that the current one-size-fits-all approach is the best strategy for this company. As the competitors begin to grow more efficient, the supply chain of M&S has to change to. There is no need to dramatically change the supply chain, but there should

Analysis of Mash

...MASH The first thing I noticed was the awesome theme music. I remember seeing reruns of M*A*S*H as a kid and turning the channel immediately because the opening theme made it sound like a drama and not something funny. So when the lyrics of the song are sung at the beginning of the film it catches me off guard. “Suicide is painless”, is one of the stupidest lyrics I think I've ever heard but I think that was the point of director Robert Altman. I later did some research and found out the song was written by the director's 14 year old son. Something else I noticed right off the bat was how familiar a lot of the faces were but I couldn't put a name on any of them until the credits rolled, Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, and Robert Duvall being the most familiar. Up until a few years ago I had no idea M*A*S*H was a movie before it was a show. So when we were assigned the film I had expectations of seeing some of the cast members of the series. Apparently I was wrong because I didn't see any whatsoever. From what I've read, the show is based on the movie, and the movie is based on the book so all the characters are exactly the same. I have to say this. Hawkeye and Trapper John are now two of my favorite movie characters of all time. Sutherland and Gould played their respective parts so nonchalantly that you forget they're both actually trained surgeons in the middle of a very bloody war. I have to admit the zaniness of the film touched a bit too close to something I would...

Sit-Coms

...All in the Family a show which aired from 1971-1983 was one of the most important and influential series that aired during the time frame mentioned above. This show did not shy away from addressing controversial or socially relevant issues. MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) aired from 1972-1983, this show was revolved around the 4077th MASH which was one of the surgical units stationed in Korea during the Korean War (1950-1953). The staff of a Korean War field hospital used humor to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war. The issues that All in the Family addressed were religious, political, social and personal issues. Archie Bunker one of the main characters, was better known as a bigot, a prejudice blue collar backlasher against liberal and permissive values. He treated his wife Edith with no respect, always argued wit his daughter, and verbally assaulted his son-in-law. MASH addressed political and social issues. This show was mostly liberal and this show often criticized politicians who mired the United States in Vietnam (Davidson, Delay, Heyrman, Lytle, & Stoff pg. 932). Both All in the Family and MASH were condemned by the religious right because they believed that shows played a major role in corrupting the family values. Religious right considered the shows of the 1970s to being permissive, having positive portrayal of unmarried women, premarital sex along with drug use, profanity, homosexuality, nudity, violence and prejudices. The religious right was...

...when lide has rerely benn tougher for manufacturers in the developed world, miele’s strategy for survival is to break almost all the rules. The german company, a global leader in high-quality domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacum cleaners, is renowned for its exavting manufacturing standards and its refusal to move down-market and compete on price. Miele bases nearly all its manufacturing in high-cost Germany and is self-sufficient to a high degree. Rather than outsource to low-cost supliers, it makes 4m electric motors ayear (enough for all its products) in its own plant near cologne. Which it says is essential to maintain its quality standards. Sales last year werw E2.2bn (L1.5bn) The approach commands respect among miele,s industry peers. ‘it is the Rolls-Royece of the industry, with a fantastic position at the top end,’ says Andrea Guerra, chief executive of Merloni, the italian white goods maker. But the domestiic appliance sector is one of europe’s most competitive and inevitably questions are being asked about how long miele can stick to what many see as its old-dashioned ways, before succumbing to lower-costt rivals. In fact, whether miele survives in its current form over the next decade will be an important test case for the whole of european manufacturing. The company sells appliances ranging from dishwashers to coffee machines, most commanding a price premium of up to 70 per cent over the competitors’ wares. It spends 12 per cent of its revenue on...

Chem Exam

...first part, you will analyze an unknown solution for the presence of seven common ions. In the second part, you will test an unknown solid to determine which of two possible identities is correct. Part I. Spot Tests for Some Common Ions A simple approach to the qualitative analysis of an unknown solution is to test for the presence of each possible ion by adding a reagent which will cause the ion, if it is in the sample, to react in a characteristic way. This method involves a series of “spot” tests, one for each ion, carried out on separate samples of the unknown solution. The difficulty with this way of doing qualitative analysis is that frequently, particularly in complex mixtures, one species may interfere with the analytical test for another. Although interferences are common, there are many ions which can be identified in mixtures by simple spot tests. In this experiment we will use spot tests for the analysis of a mixture which may contain the following commonly encountered ions in solution: CO32– SO42– PO43– SCN Cl – – carbonate sulfate phosphate thiocyanate chloride acetate ammonium C2H3O2– NH4+ 78 Chemistry 1B Experiment 16 The procedures we involve simple acid-base, precipitation, complex ion formation or oxidation-reduction reactions. You will carry out each test three times. First, you will test 1 M solutions of each ion, so you can easily observe the expected results. Then you will test 0.1 M solutions of each ion, which will require more careful...

...Archimedes and the King's Crown Standard Exercise The Garden Hose Standard Exercise The Guitar String A block of mass m = 5 kg is connected to a vertical spring as shown in the diagram. When the mass is at rest, the spring stretches y0 = 5 cm beyond its natural length lspring = 14 cm. Standard Exercise The Intense Speakers 1) For this system, in the vertical configuration, y0 = 5 cm gives the equilibrium position. False True Submit Hide Solution Standard Exercise The Speeding Car Standard Exercise Heating a Metal Strip Solution: This question asks about the effect of gravity on the equilibrium position of a spring. Remember that the effect of a gravitational force is to stretch the spring an amount Δx = mg/k. This stretch in the spring represents an offset in the natural (horizontal) equilibrium position of the spring. While the question is strangely worded, the answer is true, the change in position y0 = 5 cm represents the new equilibrium position. Standard Exercise Compressing a Gas 2) You pull straight down on the block with a force F = 147.15 N. How far does the spring stretch if the spring constant is k = 980 N/m? y = 15 cm y = 5 cm y = 45 cm Submit Hide Solution Solution: This is just a question on the nature of the restoring force of a spring. Remember F = -kx so x = F/k = F = (147.15 N)/(k = 980 N/m)/100 = 15 cm 3) With what frequency will the...

...Additional Questions 3: Kinematics 1. A balloon is 30.0 m above the ground and is rising vertically with a uniform speed when a coin is dropped from it. If the coin reaches the ground in 4.00 s, what is the speed of the balloon? Solution:- Initial velocity of coin = speed of balloon, v. by using the equation [Answer: 12.1 ms–1] 2. A car and train moves together along two parallel paths at 25.0 m s–1. The car then undergoes a uniform acceleration of -2.5 m s–2 because of a red light and comes to rest. It remains at rest for 45.0 s, then accelerates back to a speed of 25 m s–1 at a rate of +2.5 m s–2. How far behind the train is the car when it reaches the speed of 25 m s–1, assuming that the train’s speed has remained constant at 25 m s–1. Solution:- For the car to stop we used the equation v2=v02 + 2as and v = v0 + at m and s For the car to speed up again, m and time taken, s Total distance moved by car in that time = 125 m + 125 m = 250 m. Total distance travelled by the train = 25 × (10+45+10) = 1625 m Therefore the car is (1625 – 250) = 1375 m behind the train. [Answer: 1375 m] *3. A fugitive tries to hop on a freight train traveling at a constant speed of 6.0 m/s. Chemical Kinetics

...Introduction: In this experiment, the rate law and rate constant for a reaction of oxalic acid with permanganate were determined. Every chemical reaction ranges from hours to femtoseconds to occur. The rate of a chemical reaction can be determined by assessing the change in either the reactant or product in a given time or point (Connors, 1990). It is important to take account of the stoichiometric ratios of each component, regardless as to which compound is chosen to determine the rate. The study of the rates of chemical reactions is called Chemical Kinetics (Soustelle, 2011). The following is an example of a generic chemical reaction: aA + bB → cC + dD The rate of the reaction can be expressed as a function of each reactant and each product: Rate = -1a∆A∆t= -1b∆B∆t= +1c∆C∆t= +1d∆D∆t For each reaction, the concentration is decreasing as the reaction occurs; therefore representing the rate as a positive value and a negative sign in the rate definition is used. The concentration of the products is conversely increasing as the reaction proceeds; therefore changing in concentration is positive (Connors, 1990). The reaction rate can be measured by accurately measuring the change in concentration of one of the reaction species over time. This experiment utilized a visual change in color of one of the reactants used; however, since visual indications can be subjective and it is important to perform the experiment multiple times. Also, since the color change would indicate that...
