The biggest story of 2013 in the Los Angeles area is the manhunt of Christopher Dorner, an ex-Navy Seal and former LAPD officer. Christopher Dorner had been fired from the LAPD nearly four years ago after reporting unnecessary conduct by another officer and in those four years he was planning something no one saw coming. Dorner posted a manifesto on his social network page and on February 3, 2013 it all began! His first 2 victims had been shot and killed and there were more deaths to follow. Dorner was after any and all law enforcement and anyone involved with them and LAPD had no idea what else was in store. The manhunt lasted for a little over a week and authorities had no idea where he was or what his next move could have been. Somehow, they caught up with him finally and it all ended with a cabin on fire and Dorner allegedly dead. ABC 7 was not subjective, they reported the information they had, and the reporters did not seem to make subjective comments in the first report. Some information I found odd to be reported was the preschool Dorner attended. Has the reports continued, it started to seem like all the stations were being subjective in their reports. Fox 11 news was the most subjective; the reporters shared how terrible they thought the events were and hoped for Dorner’s capture. In both stations the information that was omitted or never spoken of in detail was how good of a person everyone knew Christopher Dorner as. There were people who wanted to share their experiences with him and who have known him for years and never thought of him as a killer, but apparently none of that mattered at this point. NBC 4 was the most objective, there were no opinions, and they reported the information they had. All news stations seemed to omit any good information on the suspect, but at that point they were being subjective, including their thoughts about how the

Compare How Poets Use Language to Present Feelings in the Manhunt and One Other Poem (Nettles)

...Compare how poets use language to present feelings in “The Manhunt” and one other poem (Nettles) In ‘Manhunt’, Simon Armitage uses rhyme to reflect the togetherness of a relationship. He says “After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days.” As the poem goes on, the reader can start to recognise that the un-rhymed cuplets show how fragmented their relationship has become. In ‘Nettles’ Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft ‘s’ sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is presented using emotive language. “It was no place for rest. With sobs and tears the boy came seeking comfort and I saw white blisters beaded on his tender skin. We soothed him till his pain was not so raw.” These soothing sounds emphasises the love his father has for him and how he wants him to recover quickly. The ‘watery grin’ is another emotive description also serving as an opposing image. The way in which Scannell merges the child’s laughter of comfort and relief with the tears of pain from the sting of the nettles shows that the child is being helped by his father to get over the pain. In ‘Manhunt’, there is imagery indicating how carefully she treats her husband. “And handle and hold the damaged, porcelain collar bone, and mind and attend the fractured rudder of shoulder blade.” The point she makes...

...There are many similarities between the poems Nettle’s and The Manhunt one being that both poems are about people caring for someone close to them for instants in the poem Nettles it’s about a father who caring for his child after falling in a “parade” of Nettles but even after fixing him his father is still angered by the nettles and doesn’t want his child to feel this pain again so he decides to cut down the nettles but even after cutting them down, the new “recruit” of nettles are back within two weeks showing that no matter how hard the father tries to protect his son from pain “he would often feel sharp wounds again” this is the last line in the stanza which clearly shows how he’s son would experience pain in his life no matter how hard he tries to protect him. Whereas the Manhunt is about a man’s wife who is caring for him after his injuries from war and how he been scarred physically and emotionally. The poem is structured in couplets and each couplet lets us almost experience each small step the man wife took to help come close to him again and to get him to open up to her. The poem structure also looks like a ladder so each stanza could represent a rudder on the ladder and with every step she takes she is slowly getting closer to the top or her husband. Both poems also touch on the topic of love but in each poem it’s a different type of love, the love shown in the Manhunt is an intensive love towards her husband we see evidence of this from “handle and hold” and...

On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Major Henry Rathbone and his date Clara Harris attended Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre in downtown Washington D.C. For 12 days, manhunters were searching for the most wanted man in America. The 12 day manhunt culminated at the Garrett farm in Northern Virginia with a fiery barn that was an inferno, a dead assassin who was at his prime in life, and a grieving nation left to heal its wounds. Comparing Relationships

...In Charlotte Mew’s ‘The Farmer’s Bride’ and Simon Armitage’s ‘The Manhunt’, difficult relationships are presented by speakers who are dealing with an emotionally closed partner. Both poems explore how relationships are affected by mental health issues. In ‘The Farmer’s Bride’, the Farmer marries a girl without getting to know her. As the marriage progresses, the wife’s mental illness gradually develops – at first she ‘turn[s] afraid’, until she tries to run away, and will only speak to animals. This causes the farmer to become jealous, impatient and possibly mentally unstable. In the fourth stanza, the farmer describes his wife as she is to nature – ‘sweet... to her wild self’, then asks ‘but what to me?’ This short sentence reflects his inability to understand why she is so ‘sweet’ to nature but not to him – this is the source of his frustration. ‘Her wild self’ could be interpreted as the farmer saying she is herself in the wild, or as him calling her wild. This frustration is displayed in the last stanza, where he says ‘’Tis but a stair betwixt us’. The stairs suggest that the farmer thinks that if he can get past this obstacle between the couple, he can have a normal relationship with his wife, although in reality, it is her heart that is closed to him, not just her door. The final stanza is laid out so that it looks like stairs, for a visual as well as verbal picture. The word ‘but’ could represent his frustration – to the point that he considers forcing himself upon her...

The Coke King

...Pablo Escobar was the cruelest and most brutal drug kingpin Columbia had ever seen. He was also the most intelligent. By being so intelligent he was able to become the seventh wealthiest man in the world and was able to build an empire that supplied cocaine to 80% of the world’s population. Through intimidation, fear, control, manipulation and brutality one of the world’s largest drug cartels rose in power over the citizens and government of Columbia and these characteristics is what also drove the Medellin cartel to its collapse in 1993. Pablo Escobar was born on December 1, 1949 to a peasant farmer and a school teacher. After many years as a small time criminal, Escobar saw an opportunity to become what he had always wanted; wealthy and powerful. Escobar realized the money he could make with coca paste. He would “buy the coca paste in Bolivia or Peru, smuggle the paste back into Columbia, grind the paste into cocaine and then transport it for sale in the U.S and many other countries.”(1) In 1976, Pablo Escobar murdered his way to the top of the Medellin cartel by killing off the cartel’s original kingpin, Fabio Restrepo. With this new position opened, Escobar now had sole control over Columbia’s cocaine trade. With his election into Columbia’s Congress in 1982, Escobar had a political advantage over his rival, The Cali Cartel. With his new found political power, Escobar could now reach his murderous hand into every corner of Columbia and every country beyond Columbia, including...

How Did Lincoln Act Alone

...go as they had planned. The original plan was to raid the President’s carriage on the way to the hospital and kidnap President Lincoln. But instead he decided to go to Ford’s Theater and watch the play (“Lincoln’s Assassination”). Booth used a small .44 caliber pistol to kill President Lincoln. Booth timed his kill carefully. Mr. Booth stood in the dark black hallway while waiting for a loud strike of laughter to fill the room. Then Booth took action. Before Booth shot, Mr. Booth yelled “Sic semper tyrannis! (Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” Then he shot President Abraham Lincoln point blank range in the back of the head (Booth’s Reason”). After John Wilkes Booth escaped, the union soldiers were on a manhunt for Mr. Booth. After a two week long manhunt Federal Troops finally cornered Booth in a barn in Maryland, and that is where Booth was shot in the neck by a union soldier and died a few hours later after Booth was shot. Dominance in America

...of the western culture can be seen to have been developed out of legacies of the Western Roman Empire, and the Eastern Roman Empire. This culture has evolved and changed over time. The culture originates from where most things originated: the Greeks. The difference between the basis of the Greek standpoint on this culture, and the more newly formed American context is that ours is much more defined and rebuild. The characteristics that shape our culture make us who we are today. A certain text that can be directly applied to this ideology, especially in the United States, is the film “Zero Dark Thirty”. Zero Dark Thirty is a 2012 American action thriller set as “the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man”. The film dramatizes the decade-long manhunt for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the September 11,2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. This film really compares well with the overall aspect and topic of the western culture idea. This can be seen through the overall aspect of the entire 9/11 situation, and how the United States reacted as a result of being attacked. As most individuals know, 9/11...
