“A spirit of hostile interference against us… checking the fulfillment of (Americans) Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” (John O’Sullivan). John O’Sullivan said that Manifest Destiny was the Americans God given right to move westward. Americans decided to follow his philosophy and move westward where they farmed cash crops, helped with the annexation of Texas, and soon got involved in a war between Mexico and the United States. Manifest Destiny affected the United States economically, socially, and geographically. One of the biggest economic changes because of Manifest Destiny was the Industrial Revolution. Mexico thought that the border between them and the United States was the Nueces River, but the U.S. thought that the border was the Rio Grande. The new Texian settlers didn’t agree with the rules of the Mexican Government, and that is where the annexation of Texas began. When the Mexican Government closed off the borders between Texas and the U.S., it made the Texans want to be separated from Mexico even more than before. In the “Texas Independence Module Documents”, document B shows the Mexican Government’s point of view on how the American settlers did not follow their laws. “We cannot trust the Anglo-American colonists because they are continually demonstrating that they refuse to follow our laws, unless it is convenient for them. We will have many problems if we do not stop their disrespectful behavior by stationing soldiers and a Mexican judge in each settlement. They have been using their own colonists as judges and practicing their own laws, forgetting that they swore to obey the laws of Mexico” (Antonio Manchola). The Mexican Government had every right to place Mexican soldiers and a Mexican judge in each settlement because the American settlers were not honoring the rules of the Mexican government.
