...1 Reflection Reflection is an everyday process. We reflect on a range of everyday problems and situations all the time: What went well? What didn’t? Why? How do I feel about it? We don’t usually follow a formula for this, it just happens as feelings, thoughts and emotions about something gradually ‘surface’. We might choose to do something differently, or not, as a result of reflecting, but reflection is essentially a kind of loose processing of thoughts and feelings about an incident, a meeting, a day – any event or experience at all. Reflection can be a more structured way of processing in order to deal with a problem. This type of reflection may take place when we have had time to stand back from something, or talk it through, as in: ‘On reflection, I think you might be right’, or ‘On second thoughts, I realised he was more upset than me.’ Structured reflection If we consciously reflect, maybe as part of our work or family role, there tends to be a rough process of ‘How did it go? As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. When I started the class I didn’t know what to expect and as the class went on I continuously learned more about different types of writing and most importantly myself. Even the pieces of writing that I didn’t like I could connect with, there was always an underlining symbolism or metaphor that made it possible. But like any person I had favorites and least favorites. Recently I read two books, “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle and “Steal like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. Both of these books are considered self improvement books and are meant to motivate the reader to reach for their greatest potential. However, the two books differ in their writing style as well as, advise on obtaining one’s greatest potential. For instance, “The talent code” was written in a more formal manner with a lot of scientific facts to back up the author’s suggestions on how to improve your skills to reach greatness. On the other hand, “How to steal like an artist” was written in an informal style and used unconventional ways to present information or, advise on reaching greatness.
